Microsoft is discontinuing Windows Mixed Reality WMR

,

I’ve read that, I don’t see any mention of windows 11 specifically, can you point to that please, thanks

It doesn’t matter what’s “removed from their servers”. For people claiming: “well we’ll just download the FOD and install it offline”, this isn’t going to work.

Here is a simplified diagram of what makes WMR:

The stuff in ORANGE is things you can download, the SteamVR/OpenXR packages, the “shell” (Portal) and the device drivers. The critical part is what’s in the DOTTED LINES. If/when Microsoft removes those (and I have 0 insight on that, I haven’t been with that team for >1 year), everything else becomes useless.

These things in the dotted lines are the components that are expensive to maintain (even when no changes/improvements are done to them), so it’s likely they are the things they want to get rid of in the future.

The OS Components are a black box, so it’s not like someone can just go and replace it with their own. Re-implementing the Public APIs would be unnecessarily complex and tedious vs just re-writing something or using Monado (assuming the EDID limitation can be bypassed one day). And there is no public documentation of the driver APIs AFAICT.

By the time all of this is tied back together, your cables will have died anyway. Your headset is working today regardless of the deprecation, just enjoy that.

Does this mean eventually this forum category will be deleted at some point?

This forum category is about VR (Pimax, Varjo, Quest, Bigscreen, Index etc.) not only about WMR and HP Reverb G2 which depends on WMR.

I’ve been 100% VR since it was enabled. Minus a few updates it’s been a great experience. I run everything on ultra and at full resolution for the G2 with FPS averaging around 50 FPS. Very flyable and great emersion. I cant/won’t go back to 2D now. WMR should be working for some time still. I’m probably going to upgrade headsets in the next 6 months but want something close to 4k resolution per eye. Also something with a better FOV than what the G2 has. Still for the money the G2 has been exceptional. No hardware issues whatsoever.

I bet you’re fun at parties! We’re trying to dream in here.

Totally kidding of course, always been a fan.

It sucks for us, a tiny base of WMR users but we don’t want the wool pulled over our eyes. You always give the facts and provide transparency. A rare commodity in today’s world.

I went into the HP (Hewlett-Packard) website today where I purchased my Reverb G2. HP still advertises it with the words “Introducing the new reference for Virtual Reality” … “Outstanding audio and video quality … our HMD visor delivers some of the highest resolution compared to leading competitors in the industry …” This makes me wonder if we are talking about the same visor in this thread. And, if so, whether HP has a plan to ensure the visor works anyway, or whether it is simply trying to sell its product to unaware customers while it still can.

Agree. Probably won’t buy msfs 2024. What the use of investing in a flsim when there is no long germ support for the expensive hardware?

MSFS2024 will be in no way related to WMR. You should be able to use it with G2 as long as WMR will be still available in Win 11 (a couple of years from now?) or with any other non-WMR headset (Pimax, Varjo, Quest, Pico etc.).
Cost of MSFS will be probably a small fraction of any headset, not to mention VR-capable PC or the sim add-ons.

This happens when money releated people lead companies. The Shareholders want to see money and than there is no space for visions. Thats the world it is. Sad, really sad.

That’s how investments work. People invest with the expectation a company will work to generate a positive return on that investment. Investors are not for charity, and they can take legal action (at least in the U.S.) if a company intentionally makes bad business decisions. It’s not sad, it’s just basic economics. If WMR is not helping generate enough profit, it’s going to be cut.

Do you know of any non-“money-related” people leading companies other than charities?

Normal companies, especially public ones, primarily exist to make money.

I know. Shocking right? I didn’t know that either. That explains why ppl spell Microsoft as Micro $oft… /S

I think there is a mistaken focus on Microsoft here. Business is business and every company has the right/duty to make profit by lawful methods to ensure its survival.
The problem possibly lies with the manufacturer of the Reverb G2 if it continues to sell the product by omitting to inform customers of its impending obsolescence.

From

“Microsoft is currently working with Meta to provide services such as Xbox Cloud Gaming and Office applications for Meta Quest.”

Looks like they lost out to Mark Z and it’s the only way to sometime in the future to continue VR…

I understand that WMR is due to disappear in two years from now, ok.
Now, do G2 owners here really think they will still be using a G2 in two years, and they absolutely won’t switch to any new headset that would appear in the meanwhile ?
Truth is, there might be a world shortage of G2 replacement cables before WMR actually disappears

what happens in Nov 2024, is the cryptic future windows version “windows 12” ?
or will be a forced upgrade of todays windows 11 which makes wmr unusable !

There is at least one opensource implementation which supports WMR headsets, it’s called monado . So maybe there is still hope.
