MS/Asobo - How Did This Happen? Free Flight is Awful

Yeah last night an Easyjet a320 Neo was parked up at Miami International…

It’s the ‘lets chuck it out, people will pay, we’ll get around to fixing it eventually’ schtick which has infected gaming as a whole, in the modern day. It’s what people have now been conditioned to expect. Instead of a product that actually works.

November 19- Congratulations again Microsoft and your newest release Microsoft Flight Simulator Pay to Win 2024. You managed to release something worse than CyberPunk 2077. Something disastrous and offensive to the community! Nothing here is free, it costs money, it’s not cheap! And it deserved to have been taken more seriously. The disaster began when some enlightened mind had the wonderful idea of releasing 2020 as a video game. But to make us bite the bait, they first released it for PC and only later, when the majority bought it, did they come up with this console story. But then it was okay, it was a pandemic and people had to have fun, PC parts were expensive and in this scenario, many people bought Xbox to have this experience. No problem, everything is fine, the game continues. However, 2020 has always had many bugs, annoying bugs! Poorly optimized CPU, rain that only gets wet from the inside, DX12 in eternal beta consuming absurd VRAM and with texture problems, among many others. But then comes the announcement of 2024… which is nothing more than a 2020 DLC, with improved colors and other frills, something that REX already does. But it was the hope of bug fixes. Hidden launch, a closely guarded secret to launch only an alpha, with half a dozen people who often weren’t even real simulators, just YouTubers with lots of followers and they invited them to go to the US to give their “technical and super sincere evaluation” with everything paid for, now, would we have any sincere and real opinion? Of course not! After that, that quick alpha and that’s it… they announced those shameful prices and didn’t really explain what would be done in the migration of their paid content in 2020 and how it would be regarding the versions, nothing was said clearly, it was a mess, to this day nothing is known, only that you will have to pay for everything twice what you already have, well, D-day 11/19 has arrived! Because the heavens call! And we need to answer their call! and without a public beta, without anything, the child was released anyway, after all, there are things that if you hold on too much, it stinks, right!? And here comes Microsoft’s new Pay to Win game! Where they charge you twice for the same thing you already bought and they’re still going to charge you for add-ons once again with the new and incredible Compatible mode and blah blah. blah… but it’s our fault for financing this. The worst thing is the fanboys who defend these policies tooth and nail, smothering anyone who criticizes them, I was one who criticized the prices back in the beginning and was censored here on this same forum by the fanboys. So what do you say now? Were we here, the old guard, wrong to criticize this announced tragedy? Or are the snowflakes still right!? You decide! But the truth is that this is the result of many problems that were not discussed with the community, they didn’t let the community show up to evaluate how this new platform would behave in a real-world environment. Unfortunately, once again MSFS is thrown aside and succumbs to the incompetence of its creators. Who remembers how beautiful the launch of FSX was and its magnificent, super stable and competent platform in splendid 2006!? Remember how cool it was to have it playing smoothly on your PC, working the same way as 2004!? At that launch!? No, right, because it was terrible! Once again MS outdoes itself! Who would have thought that I would see FSX part 2 being released again! What a privilege Microsoft! #GRATITUDE!!!

I also think the message stating they’ve ‘fixed’ the issue is a stretch, given that I’m still seeing people on forums say they are stuck at 97% and have been for hours.

I think more than a half-hearted apology is needed here, to repair the damage done in regard to the faith the community have given to the developer. This is actually what I would consider unacceptable.

I don’t know why there’s no option to skip the walkaround procedure in Free Flight mode. There’s no wear and tear in Free Flight so it’s pointless to walk around, check things and look for the way inside the actual cockpit. Why is it not possible to just spawn directly in the cockpit without all the hassle?

On Xbox I had a hard time entering the A321. You stand next to a big airliner, there’s no stairs, and you have to “aim” for a clickspot on the door to enter. I don’t know how this even works on even bigger aircraft. Are we really supposed to look for a clickspot on a door handle on a 747, from the ground?

I appreciate the walkaround feature but I think it should only be mandatory in Career. In Free Flight it should be removable.

I think it’s daft as well. It’s a nice feature sure. To maybe be used once or twice, until the novelty wears off. But it should be toggled on or off. It’s stupid to be forced to do a walkaround on every flight, especially where it’s a aircraft that has zero defects on it, as it’s always brand new.

In my view so far it’s a half a***d approach. Atleast until we get 3rd party aircraft utilising these features with their own wear and tear system that hopefully works in free flight mode.

I was trying to see how msfs 2020 aircraft play with this so tried the avro rj. It put me in the belly of the aircraft.

Press shift + c to enter cockpit and remove the chocks, covers before that.

I can only speak for PC but there is a key binding to teleport you into the cockpit. By default on PC it’s Shift + C.

Edit: should have hit the reply button earlier

There’s no Shift or C on Xbox and the sim doesn’t state anywhere if there’s a shortcut on the controller for teleporting to the cockpit. Even so, if you don’t remove the pitot/engine covers first, the plane will not work properly. I wish the whole procedure was removable.

I’m pretty well aware that Xbox does not have a keyboard command if you do not connect one, however you may look up if there is a default binding for take control of character.

There is also a binding for set multiple covers without a description (I guess it’s only to place them as it’s not called “toggle”, however that would have to be tested).

I 100% agree. I personally feel like core simmers are an after-thought. I get it of course, because the money is on the gaming / casual side of things.

It’s just - I also feel like we “core simmers” are being gaslit into believing that this simulator is about us when everything points to the opposite and I really don’t appreciate it.

  1. terrible default airports
  2. terrible airport lighting
  3. terrible AI aircraft behaviour
  4. terrible taxiways
  5. noone asked for, or wants, a walkaround before getting in the cockpit
  6. why is my 737 pilot wearing jeans in the cockpit?
  7. or conversely why is my Piper Cub pilot wearing a pilots uniform?
  8. terrible physics (settling after landing for instance - it’s like landing with wooden blocks instead of tyres and suspension).
  9. abysmal control setup interface
  10. … I can’t be bothered to write any more, there’s so much stuff I’d change about the sim!

At what point do we start admitting that this isn’t for flight simmers any more, and more for people who just want to fly around randomly in a plane in a beautiful world? There IS a difference.

I’ve been favouring X-Plane for a long time now despite MSFS being prettier and I had hoped so much that 2024 would bring me back with its beautiful visuals and the promised physics changes.

No chance.

Do you have anything what you purchased for FS2020 available to download in FS2024 library?
I don’t.

I did purchase an Aviator upgrade and whole sim installation is only 11.9Gb. It was supposed to be around 50Gb as they advertised.

Also in the library many components are missing.
Deluxe to Aviator upgrade 51/91 items streamed;
Premium Deluxe to Aviator upgrade 31/71 items streamed;
Standard to Aviator upgrade 66/106 items streamed.

Anyone has the same issue?

Same old really. I have flight simmed since 1996, and X-Plane ALWAYS seems to be lingering around. It never really goes away, its always there to pick up the pieces. People screaming this is it for Xplane etc etc… They’re always wrong. It’s outlasted the original Microsoft Flight Simulator (before Asobo), Sierra flightsim, FLY!, Microsoft Flight, P3D etc… And I have zero doubt it will outlast this iteration of MSFS too. Bookmark this and check back in a decade…

Made a flight in SBSP is the same old terrain elevation since MSFS X. No improvments. That was reported on early days of MSFS and nothing was done.

xbox user here, will download later once my premium steelbook comes, but is there a way to skip the walk around on free flight and just enter the cockpit, engines already started, ie on runway?

if so how?

on fs 2020 on my xbox controller, default setting maybe? I do have a button mapped to toggle between external and cockpit view

Can you point me to a solution which works to relocate the Community folder to E: drive?

I could not load into free flight it just hung above the airport until I updated my nvidia display drivers now its working great!!

They truly stuffed it big time. Flight controls don’t work properly. Keyboard controls are all new. Why can’t they import your FS2020 settings? Walk around is just dumb. I just want to start up and fly. Seriously thinking of getting a Steam refund on the game. I don’t care about avatars. This isn’t a flight simulator it’s just an overcomplicated world exploration tool.

You’ll be lucky to get a refund on Steam. They are quoting pre-order dates as being over 14 days…

This is a great feature if implemented properly as A2A did for the Comanche. One day in a Comanche, during the walk-around, I found a rag blocking the engine air inlet. As real world pilot I always start with a walk-around to reinforce the proper habits.
