Update for 2020 is in the works. See statement by Jorg below:
Vasco: Looking at long-term support for MSFS 2024, do you anticipate supporting it for longer than MSFS 2020?
Jorg: Well, I’m not sure about that—we’re still supporting MSFS 2020 even now.
Vasco: I see what you mean. But considering the pattern—MSFS 2020 launched, then MSFS 2024 came four years later—does that mean we could expect an MSFS 2028? Or is the plan to extend the lifespan of this version for longer?
Jorg: Honestly, at this moment, I don’t spend a single minute thinking about a Flight Simulator 2028.
Right now, our focus is 100% on MSFS 2024. There’s even an upcoming update for MSFS 2020 that includes memory optimizations and other improvements. But the priority is making sure that the simmers who have moved to 2024 have a great experience. That’s going to take time.
That is my “take away” as well, but being a total outsider, I obviously have no direct knowledge of Asobo’s software development “practices” - but the above might be a reasonable conclusion.
It is my impression that 2020 has been ‘on the back burner’ for a long time, whilst 2024 was still embryonic and well before 2024 was actually announced. The performance in 2020 has, from my perspective at least, been in decline almost from day one and has now reached the state where it is just some sort of sick joke.
I hope they leave 2020 as it is for now. I have a feeling that they might change something and make it worse like 2024. At the moment it works like a dream for me. Nice scenery and no stutters.
