Well…I am just curios. In MSFS2020 most of the content was downloaded (Scenery, Planes, Add-ons). If you installed one of those the existing content was overwritten. During flights this ready to use individual content was further updated, reloaded or optimised based on bandwidth and personal settings.
To imagine this would all be possible in real time, individually and in addition to render everything to a global simulation experience?! I hope they haven’t overthought and overenginered this…
Bad airplanes can be avoided but bad scenery breaks or crashes the sim and they really shouldn’t wait for whatever they’re doing with marketplace to turn on the disable feature.
MSFS 2024 will load both streamed and downloaded content at the same time. You can even use a livery that you have downloaded and placed in the community folder, on an aircraft that is streamed and it will load without any problems.
I believe that only marketplace addons that developers have marked as compatible with MSFS 2024 are showing up. Those that aren’t are being hidden.
It’s working right now. Almost everything we are using in the new sim is being streamed and outside of the initial hiccups with the servers (understatement of the year), it’s all working pretty seamlessly.
They said they are parsing through the 3rd party content again because some non-2020 components to addons were causing the sim to lock up. So they needed to re-test and are releasing them to us as they are approved.
So everything that’s compatible will be there, it’s just a matter of time.
The results vary depending on your internet connection and the MSFS 2024 servers, which are not yet very stable.
I think this will be resolved once Microsoft allows people to download content instead of streaming it. It will be better for people with slow and/or unstable connections.
I’m on XBox with a 1 GB connection and while the LOD could definitely be improved, it’s pretty much what I had in 2020, but more stable and smoother overall.
My brother just tried it on his PC, which is pretty high end but not a monster, and he said it’s significantly smoother and just as sharp if not sharper than 2020.
However that’s the point of allowing downloading. If your internet connection isn’t great, then you can download the content.
Edit: I’m also waiting a few days/weeks to see how the LOD improves with both the install option and the clearing of the initial issue with MS servers. Once that is done then I’ll truly be able to judge, but it’s definitely working.
I couldn’t use AP with the 3rd party plane I tried. Then again, I couldn’t do it with any 1st party plane either, so my experience isn’t much help, sorry
So as I posted this, I went on a flight around NYC now that all my scenery is streamed. It loads fine, but it’s now a little bit choppy, at least for a night flight. However it’s all loading, the buildings in NYC (including my SamScene3D addon), the airports, and traffic. The LOD issues still exist from the last SU update in 2020 where near and far are fine, but the mid-distance lighting is either missing or a disaster. But otherwise it’s working. What region are you in? Sounds like Europe is having a tougher time with things than the US Servers.
Like I said I’m giving it a bit on the LOD because it can definitely improve pretty drastically as even 2020 looked better in many areas at mid distance. But I’m waiting for the server stuff and allowing for installation to see if that fixes it (or a new SU update).
Here’s a quick clip I just took of an approach into KJFK:
Also here’s an earlier test flight I did in the Yosemite Discovery flight. Significantly less in that area than what I have in NYC so it’s a lot smoother.
To me this confirms the feedback from the “Horrible Graphics” Post a little. Instead of getting more detailed, it seems they apply common circumstantial filters in context of time, season or weather. It’s seems like using an iPhone filter to make a photo cosier but with daytime and autumn. This looks way to reduced to a color theme than night time scenery. Don’t you think?
I don’t disagree that the graphics are lacking. My only point is that I’m waiting for thing to settle down before I fully judge. Happy that you’d raised it as a bug so it’s on the MS/Asobo radar ( if it isn’t already). I’m also waiting to see more info about the 2020 fix that was supposed to help better optimize for SU16 that got pushed back because of needing to finish 2024.
I highly doubt they would make 2024 look worse than 2020 just to get it to work on XBox when even at its worst from a potential CTD from 3rd party addons, it still looked great on console. It’s definitely frustrating right now, but I want to let the smoke settle before I start fully ranting.
