Msfs 2020 will not shut down fully

Indeed I did.

I also joined the PC gaming preview in the insider hub app

“it’s in the backlog”

IF the issue is something in specific in the Gaming Services app, then MS has to fix it - not Asobo.

MSFS uses the Gaming Services app, and MSFS is created and maintained by Asobo, but Asobo does not create or have any control over the code that the app contains.

Asobo might be able to identify what process in the app is hanging up and preventing MSFS from closing, but the best they can probably do is to pass that information on to the developers at Microsoft who are the ones who actually maintain Gaming Services, and are the only ones who have the ability to fix any bugs the app may have.

People are fond of using the term “MS/Asobo”, as if they are one entity, but they are not.

Hopefully MS Asobo gives the solution to stop the nightmare of msfs2020 shutdown issues. All we need is a patch file to apply if no updates. Please, action!

The problem is clearly the gaming services.
Version 27.99.7001.0 works perfectly.
Unfortunately, this version keeps getting updated by the Microsoft Store to version 28.100.8001.0, and with this version, the sim no longer shuts down properly.
I have now disabled the automatic update function in the Microsoft Store.

unfortunately the problem is back, after the TenPatrol solution.

Hi TenPatrol - where might you get these versions of the Xbox App and Gaming Services as the MStore only provides the latest “corrupted” version? Thanks!

I’m still having the issue

Ha! Thank you and thank @SJTAFSS. At first it did not seem to be the solution. I had removed both Gaming service & Xbox App, rebooted and then re-installed both. After reading this post, I did not re-install Gaming service and lo and behold: the first two times starting the game and shutting down it shut down properly! I am amazed. Thank you for the effort you are putting in to help people fix this. I hope it will be the solution for more people

Also after reading your next post below I remembered that I recently had a CTD (first after a long time) and from reading that post I thought that that might have been to cause of thing… It could very well have been that same moment that this problem appeared for the first time

If you have Windows 11, set this up and with one click you can close MSFS. How to enable Taskbar End Task option on Windows 11 - Pureinfotech

If it’s still updating, that means you haven’t followed the steps I suggested. Here’s the workaround that should stop the Microsoft Store from updating Gaming Services automatically.
Also, make sure your Xbox app is on version 2504.1001.26.0 - that’s important.

Can you let me know which version of the Xbox app and Gaming Services you currently have installed?

Please send me a private message and I’ll share Xbox App 2504.1001.26.0

*****My possible solution posted earlier did not last.
At least we all can agree that gaming services is a possible culprit.

I think this bug is an Nvidia bug. I’ve had a few problems with Nvidia drivers lately so today I went back a month before these problems occurred and installed the one from April 16th, Game ready driver 576.02. Now MSFS 2020 shuts down correctly.

I highly doubt its anything to do with Nvidia, I was on 572.16 and was not working. Worked with TenPatrol and rolled back the Xbox app and followed his guide a disabled auto updates etc. let the Xbox app update so it would install the earlier gaming services version and this cures it.
what versions of Xbox and gaming services are you on and also windows etc

Just checked mine and it shows 'Gaming services…143MB is size (Windows 11 Pro 24H2 26100.3915)

Hi folks!

2 day before, I made re-instrallation for Games Services and Xbox App. It helped only once - right after that games closed properly. But now the same behavior: game msfs 2020 doesn’t exit totally.

More over, does anybody try to opens COMMON settings page? Where you can set up grafic settings? In my case game hungs for a momment then terminates. It means if I want totally close game in the end of gaming - just try to open GENERAL settings page. ■■■■!!!

Any advice?

First, I have to applaud @SJTAFSS and @TenPatrol for originally identifying and confirming that the problem is related to a specific Gaming Services version. This does not mean that the Gaming Services update caused the problem. As you point out, @MereCube15, the problem started with the FS2020 update, not the Gaming Services update.

But what this observation does tell us is that something in the latest FS2020 update that is related to the Gaming Services connection is now causing a problem. If and when some Asobo/MS developer is assigned to work on this issue, it hopefully narrows down where in the FS2020 code they should be looking for this bug.

After pressing ‘quit to desktop’, the sim disappears but the msfs icon is left on the taskbar.

Same issue for me. Been going on for more than a week.

Same here. MSFS 2020 remains open. Have to shut it down with task manager.
