FYI: I didn’t want to spam the thread, so I helped @ZevvyPapa restore an older version of Gaming Services via private message. Of course, it took a few tricks to get it done.
Currently starting the sim to test and will let all you peeps know how it went…this update would be for people who may have joined the pc gaming previews within xbox insider…this would cause the xbox app to load the latest version of gaming services after uninstalling.
UPDATE
Sim now closes properly…excellent help and guidance from TenPatrol
Asobo and MS should hire this guy…putting them to shame
Thanks for confirming that my workaround is working!

I’m currently updating the workaround and will include specific steps for players who joined the PC Gaming Preview, because as you know, rolling back to an older version of Gaming Services isn’t so straightforward if you’re enrolled in that preview - just like you were.
I have the same version in Win 11. And I would bet most of the people reporting this bug have the same version.
Big thanks to you for leading us in the right direction and to @TenPatrol
for pinning down a fix. You both deserve medals from the community.
I’m glad Asobo still marked this issue as bug-logged for an abandoned sim. When or will they fix it, it is another matter . I hope they will still fix it before they will shut down the sim completely.
I’d rather they fix other things that we can’t work around, but I understand your intention here And I sorely hope FS2020 won’t be abandoned until 2030 as promised.
Problem returned…28.100.8001.0. I also notices under services there are two instances of gaming services running.
I got this Version, W11 Home 24H2 OS Build 26100.3915
Xbox App Version 2504.1001.26.0
Thanks for info mate.
If the issue has returned, please edit your post and remove the word “solution” from it, as it’s currently misleading.
There have been two instances of Gaming Services showing in Services for as long as I can remember - I used to recommend removing two related entries from the system registry as well. However, that’s no longer necessary. Could you please let me know which version of the Xbox app you currently have installed?
Is this issue happening with 2024 as well?
No, this issue doesn’t occur with MSFS 2024 version - there’s no problem fully closing MSFS 2024.
Please give my workaround a try and let me know if it helps.

To TenPatrol, my installed versions are …
Gaming services 27.29.7001.0
X Box App 2504.1001.26.0
Your further advice will be very welcome
Congratulations on finding the cause, and a solution.
Martin.

Too many issues these years. I just can’t trust their words anymore .
Issue has come back for me, after reinstalling Xbox App I had Gaming Services 27.99.7001.0 and 2020 shut down fine, just loaded 2020 and had to terminate it via End Task. Just checked and Gaming Services now showing 28.100.8001.1, so probably an issue with the Gaming Services App. Will try @TenPatrol workaround when I get time.
Aside from having Gaming Services at version 27.29.7001.0 it’s also crucial that your Xbox app is at version 2504.1001.26.0 - not any newer version.
This 2020 shutdown issue is something MS/Asobo broke, they should fix it asap period, we shouldn’t have to do the job for them.
I had the problem until three days ago it was consistent. It suddenly miraculously disappeared and I’ve not had an incident since. I didn’t attempt any fixes. 2505.1000.40.0 when it became that version I have no idea.
I’m opted into 2024 beta. Don’t know if this is of any relevance.
I see you’re on Xbox app version 2505.1000.40.0 , which probably means you joined the PC Gaming preview in the Xbox Insider Hub app.
