okay.. i don’t need to do that.. when i used the repair tool, my msfs 2020 now shuts down as it should do.. i have tested it many times now, including rebooting my machine and it’s fine,… so for me just using the repair tool within the support section of your profile within the xbox app cured the problem for me
jsut for clarity i have NOT done any of the more complicated procedures suggested .. i would have done so if this hadn’t worked for me
It also occurred to me that using the repair option on Gaming Services might work. I first tried using the repair option via Windows Settings/Apps/Installed Apps/Gaming Services/Advanced Options. Sadly, no change and MSFS 2020 Continued to run after quitting to desktop.
I saw ThirteenStorm2 post this morning about doing a repair via the Xbox App and gave that a try too. Again, sadly no change.
So, I guess I’ll try the tenpatroll uninstall/reinstall process next.
Oh, I’m on Windows 11 24H2 and Gaming Services 28.100.8001.0
It seems that either an update to Msfs 2020, windows gaming services, the Xbox app on PCs, and or some combination of the above resulted in this issue.
Pretty much how the other up mentioned fixes works . It will work for a day , over many reboots without problem . And next day the issue starts again . I guess there are some windows components that only checks for “updates” once in every 24hrs or something like that , and will download the "right version " regardless if you have windows updates enabled or paused . Xbox app or game bar , or any other component that uses the gaming services .
If you’ve applied my workaround correctly, nothing should update itself. Once the steps are done properly, automatic updates in the Microsoft Store - including Gaming Services - are disabled and greyed out, so no unexpected version changes will occur.
yeah, not going to do that . While the sim works well with older version of gaming services , I have issues with game bar / game dvr when gaming services version is not the newest . Just going to wait and see if either Asobo patches up the sim so it works with current version of gaming services or ms rolls out a new one that works with the sim .
A batch file is all fine but you might also want to add to it a restart of your PC. Since I recall someone saying if you restart MSFS after killing it manually, there will be issues.
Can’t recall the details from the top of my head but I’m sure they are buried in here somewhere…
Someone said Microsoft doesn’t care. Absolutely. When was the last update to MSFS2024 which has not worked from the beginning. Talking with friends who bought it (I didn’t) and they have quit using it altogether Sad. Same thing with Lockheed martin P3DV6 has not been updated for over a year and a half . Get our money and forget about it .
I also discovered that restarting Gaming Services, either via Task Manager or the Windows Services Utility will cause MSFS to fully close when it hangs after a Quit to Desktop. Now I can’t say whether this is any better/safer/less potentially harmful than ending the MSFS task directly from the Task Bar or using Task Manager but it does work. It may be that MSFS is stuck waiting on Gaming Services and by restarting Gaming Services it is freed up to close. But that’s honestly just speculation.
Well, the sim is basically finished the shut down sequence when we have the "still running in the background " situation , since we do not get the "your last session of msfs ended unexpectedly " error message after restarting the sim . Really looks like the game just waits for the "gaming services " module to terminate itself or close connection or whatever , so I would think either way is safe .
