MSFS2020 won’t shut down properly. This means the game is gone from the monitor, but is still listed as not running in the task manager. With the help of the MS Games Hotline, I completely reinstalled MSFS2020. Since the issue still wasn’t resolved, I was advised to reinstall Windows 11 using an ISO file. That didn’t help either. I thought there would be an update sometime soon, but unfortunately, after three weeks, nothing has happened. The last update didn’t help either; it was probably just to update the navigation data. Since several users are still having this problem, I’m writing here to remind you about MSFS2020.

This is a temporary workaround, but not a solution. Personally I find ending the task to be no problem, especially with the ‘End Task’ option that can be added to the Task Manager

ISSUE DESCRIPTION
Description of the issue: On exiting msfs2020, looking at the taskbar, the msfs2020 icon still has the bar underneath it showing it’s still running. Opening task manager show the flightsimulator.exe is still running. Moving mouse cursor over taskbar icon bring up full screen still with the exit yes/cancel window, moving cursor to try yes again, the sim window mnimises again. Only way to fully exit the sim is the end task on task manager. Any body any ideas why this is happening.

TenPatrol, thank you so much. Some other PC game pass games were also doing the same thing (Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Oblivion Remastered and more) All fixed. At Clair Obscur it sometimes .exe quits itself after 30-40secs at background, i was checking game save files, and realised it was updating them before quiting at background. Sometimes it stays there forever.
I followed your workaround, but after a few windows start, it seems Game Services updates to version 28…
I have to keep deleting gaming services to prompt it to download the right version (27.99.7001.0)
Could you please run through the workaround again? I could permanently block Gaming Services updates, but I won’t share that method since it would do more harm than good for less advanced users - so please don’t ask me for it in private messages.
Unfortunately, we now have to wait for the official fix - one that really should have been released ages ago but still hasn’t appeared.
It wasn’t meant as a personal matter. I was trying to gauge the legitimacy of your recommendations. There are too many posts on this board claiming to be facts when they’re just opinions. Nothing wrong with opinions… they should just be stated as such.
Yesterday, I flew a successful flight and prior to exiting out of MSFS2020, I updated the USA and I believe the Antarctica Microsoft scenery. Afterwards I went to the MSFS home screen and attempted to exit the game. I then attempted to update FSUIPC to 7.5.3 and change a setting within GSX. Unfortunately, neither program would update since MSFS was still open. I checked and sure enough it still was open. I gave MSFS2020 some time just in case it was doing something important, but it never shutdown. I used task manager to shut it down.
I tried it two more times with the same result. Afterwards, I opened the XBOX app and updated many apps. I’ll try it again today to see if any of the XBOX system updates to include Windows 10 updates fixed the issue.
