MSFS 2024 : Ability to control snow coverage

With MSFS 2024, there is a new feature that automatically puts a snow cap over the terrain above a certain altitude depending of the time of the year. While this idea seems very clever, there are many drawbacks, especially in moutainous areas.

It is often unaccurate : snow WHERE there shouldn’t be or snow WHEN there should’nt be.

It is often very ugly : the snow cap has too harsh boundaries and the texture is too white, too plain, and covers some of the nice aerial or satelite imagery underneath. For example, in Himalayas, large parts of the beautiful glaciers are covered with that ugly snow cap all year long.

Those shots are Himalayas in July, September then December, using CUSTOM weather, snow coverage set to 0. We never get to see the actual imagery of the peaks under the snow.

The other big problem with snow coverage is with live weather. This is an old one and, unfortunatly, it is not fixed in 2024. The snow coverage in live weather is too often exagerated and, again, there is too much unrealistic snow where and when there shouldn’t be.

A nice and easy solution would be to give us the opportunity to control the artificial snow coverage with a slider at all time, using live or custom wheather.

Pleave vote it up in the wishlist !!

Oh dear. I wouldn’t hold your breath on this ever being fixed, or even touched at all. They seem to just be completely unwilling to let players control anything to do with live weather beyond “on/off”. Regardless of how half baked certain aspects of it are. The altitude thing is a nice touch, but it’s not really going to work for any mountainous areas like the Alps, Himalayas etc. unless they improve live snow beyond being a featureless flat white texture. Which they certainly don’t seem to be willing to do.

According to Meteoblue, all the valleys in the Alps should be clear of snow right now. As usual in MSFS, they are all white

Himalayas again…

Whether they give a slider or not that snowline is far too well defined and look artificial and ugly.
It needs more variation and sprinkling at the base of the snow and raising more to the peaks.

Such an unimaginative solution they have put in the sim…

Beautiful Mt Cook (NZ) with it’s year long ugly snow cap. Please let us remove the snow.

Hi @CroixPaille2451 ,
Are those existing wishes not covering what you are asking for ?:

Hello,

Part of the problem is linked to those old bug, but 2024 introduced a newer one : the inability to remove snow at certain altitude and time of year.

So i think this is different

Yeah they are so ignorant about this issue. It’s unbelievable.
They don’t just fillup all valleys with snow even if there is none, they ALSO desaturate the whole alps and turn them into some brown or milky white desaster zone. It’s such a downgrade!

I’ve noticed as well that when you move the snow slider in the weather settings, the snow starts at the top of the mountains and moves down the further to the right you move the slider. It’s impossible to get snow in the valleys without the tops being plasted in snow and looking terrible.

I would also like to shovel it when I’m outside of the aircraft and have to clean up the aircraft before warming it up and defrosting it.

South-american glaciers : still unable to remove this snow cap to see the beautiful aerial underneath

Some of us live where we have almost 6 months of snow and significant snow cover. I want more snow - except for in real life.

There is work to do to improve the sim on snow and lake ice which is linked to snow dept while this is not real life related. Some areas of the world are very cold but has almost no snow but frozen lakes. See this post : Lake Ice Should Not Be Linked to Snow Depth in North-America - #3 by Guillaume3511

There is a slider for snow dept but it remove liveweather, which is bad, and produce poor results like mentionned in this thread.
Hoping they put energy on this while it is winter now.
