MSFS 2024 is broken ... Or is it?

No.

I do not object to useful content about a problem.

Viz.

It’s short, to the point, notes a specific issue and moves on.  No whining, no complaining about how everything is going down the tubes.

What I object to is the constant whining about the same things over and over, infecting almost every thread on these forums.

As @belatu42 said:

And that’s what I find disturbing.

Not that this or that isn’t working - that’s important information - it’s the continued moaning and groaning about everything.

I really understand this comment, however it seems the final results we all see as end users are a bit different from the initial theory.

I have no doubts about staff qualification itself, honestly. However software production is not just coding but it involves the whole process: design, planning, testing, changes control, quality check, documentation, release planning, etc.

If you have a solid design concept but you follow a weak process the result is going to cause delays, coding errors and a lot of time will be needed for corrections of existing features. If the release to public is a mess or you are always late that’s creating problems to final users. If you create a NASA style SDK but it’s not well documented is useless as technical reference or as content creation tool. If the SDK provides error detection tools but you ignore the detected errors during testing and publish content with such errors then testing is useless.

In my opinion this game has some technical complexity, for sure. But on the other hand most of the complexity seems to be just created artificially, as soon as already proven processes, that were created by many other industry experts much earlier than FS2020 even existed, are not followed correctly.

We can all quickly understand this by the well known sentence commonly seen in the forum after every patch release: “they fixed one feature and broke two”. I’m pretty sure most of us would love to say “they fixed one feature and added two new ones” instead.

Cheers

Aren’t there runway graphic update packages that already exist?

Maybe they’ll add a “color picker” for the asphalt’s color?

You know there’s always an opportunity to learn something. MSFS has almost taught me more geography than Risk. Today I was sufficiently intrigued to wonder if there are actually any pink runways. I don’t believe so, unless you include those covered in fire retardant. Hot Pink planes are not in short supply though… :grinning:

I’m just going to leave this SDK Doc page here
https://docs.flightsimulator.com/html/Developer_Mode/Scenery_Editor/Objects/Runway_Objects.htm

I just googled about pink runways and got the planes, they’re great aren’t they!?

The pink runway was a touch of humor to better convey my message about negative posts

Oh, I know :grinning: I respect people’s passion; I was just trying to lighten the mood. :dove:
Now that I know the SDK contains variables to enable the RGB colouration of runways, so they could be a thing :grinning:

Speaking of the SDK, I write custom code using VS2019 with SimConnect and I see at least a couple of issues in 2024 that broke code which worked fine in 2020. (Yes, I filed a bug report but I doubt these will be fixed any time soon.) While I’m not trashing the Asobo team, I see MANY really dumb issues in the SDK. Some documentation is vague or just missing. Some things don’t work as described and like I said, there are at least two issues that weren’t issues before.

same here, i loved gato, in full 4 color CGA in all its glory
ahhh the good o’le days

No problem with the update for SU1 on my end. I fact was firing up 2020 and had to go through a mandatory update which took about 15 minutes to complete. Then 2020 hung twice loading a flight, then once the flight loaded, MSFS lost connection with TrackIR. Rebooted 2020 and after about 35 minutes from starting, finally got into a flight.

Right after completing the 2020 flight, fired up 2024 and had the mandatory update.. it took a few minutes to download, it was applied and the sim finished loading and was into a free flight all in under 5 to 7 minutes after first firing up the sim.

So sure 2024 is completely broken and 2020 is so much better…. Eh….not in my book. Of course I still remember the hubris when 2020 was first released so pretty much read these type thread for entertainment, not information.

I recommend you hang out at the DevSupport forum and see how some of the sausage is made. There is no weak process there. Eric, Sylvain, Boris, those folks are incredible at digging into and finding RCA and making sure bugs stay dead. No disregard, no perfunctory review.

Jorg wasn’t kidding when he said everyone took a huge step forward knowing it would be unknown territory when it essentially became a SaaS. No one else has tried something this hard.

Wasn’t that a Steam issue?

Thats what we get for being developers and project managers. Im so glad i gave up working for lent lol

This is a good example indeed. DevSupport is just a way to report bugs, as well as this forum. For sure they are actively tracking the feeback. However this is just one part of the whole process. Once you detect an error you have to fix it and check that your fix has not broken anything else that was working well before. Having a DevSupport does not mean there´s a proper control change strategy behind that nor it ensures anything by itself. It just means you have a defined way to collect errors in one single place.

For instance as soon as people report bugs during a beta test campaign and the live version still contains some of the errors that were already reported during that campaign is where you come to situations where the theory and the real result look different, as I said before. On the other hand if you publish a long changelog where many of the aircraft contain fixes but after the patch new errors appear on those aircraft and those errors didn´t exist before your patch the results and the theory are different again.

I never said there was no process behind this development. But if you have one and you just produce such inconsistent results then either your process is wrong or you are not following its steps correctly. This is not a matter of dedication. You can have teams working twice the time or increase the amount of people dedicated to this and still come to the same inconsistent results as before or keep breaking things while fixing others. Then you are the one that is creating the complexity, not the game nature or its innovative technical approach.

Cheers

It seems fairly broken still… The blue “gateways” wont go away even if you turn them off in the assist section, the default ATC is completely unusable for an IFR flight, and consistently good frame rates seem to be nearly unattainable for me and I have a decent set up and good internet.

VIP missions have got richer too - better than medium cargo now?

Career seems to force some settings, however, you can bind TOGGLE VISUAL ASSISTANCE to a button and that will definitely turn the gates and taxi paths off.

Just a note to that: when traffic gets pushed over to the devforum from the public forum, they end up getting a lot of unhelpful/irrelevant posts and requests. Folks really have to make sure it’s not an end-user error or a “help me…” issue before posting. There’s a higher standard there - things should be constructive, well-troubleshot, and related to the SDK, so my advice to anyone is read through and get the gist of what goes on there before posting.

I’m not too knowledgeable on i net functions. This happened

and I’m thinking the worst. Su1 has blown me up. Thankfully Begottenpoet here in the forums convinced me that keeping good records on all MSFS settings handy was a must, I could see no changes. I have a TV/security that is on most days while simming. It appeared fine. After lots of note comparing, I decided to leave the sim and try again later like always. A stutterfest ensued when I returned later. I exited the sim depressed kinda. So I went and called the Carrier, and they said they still see no issues in my area, but will come out and check the following day. Then I tried the TV to relax my anguish. No go on tv or PC now, but it was fine til I powered it down. Now, both were searching for a connection. Hows that I asked? I called the repair service back and a lady instructed me how to reset the router with a complete power down and push of a button, wait 5 minutes and power back up. I’ve never had net issues btw,(1 gb fiber hardwired and their best current router) so I was convinced it was their problem. Nope, the reset recommended fixed it right up. but how did the TV/PC still work til powered down I asked? I couldn’t get an answer. So I’ve added another ck to the list. Don’t chunk it out the window if the sim flubs with stutters, strange things happen sometimes, and remember to ck them routers and download speeds often. A first for me since simming but daily now.
