MSFS 2024 terrible Photogrammetry

I’m not sure if it’s the streaming, the aggressive LOD or what, but I do get unacceptable popups over dense photogrammetry areas, even when flying over the same area at a crawl in a chopper or the gyroplane and this with a rolling cache of 150 GB. Yet I never seem to see my 100Mbs fibre connection even close to being maxed out.

For performance reasons though I have to limit my TLOD to around 100-125, as I fly almost exclusively in VR. I haven’t had much time in 2D mode, but on Ultra preset with TLOD maxed out it was nowhere near as bad. 4090, 5800x3D.

Well, I was finally satisfied that I had gotten the best frame rate possible with 2024 so I decided to reproduce a few screen shots from 2020 that I use as screen savers. The results are shockingly bad. I better ask what are the optimal settings. Here is my local campus from 2020 followed by 2024.

Well, if you find the frame rates of 2024 attractive, the quality of the images will finalize the sale!

This is the comment I was searching for. All the homes and the docks in the lakes in Alaka are gone. I was really looking forward to the photogammetry of the lakes in Alaska to show all the little homes along the the banks in Alaska and the streams as well. These homes and boat docks were present to a limited extent in MS 2020, and now in the MSFS 2024 game they are missing. I use these regions in Alaska to fly around as a form of relaxation and meditation, in particular the Talkeetna lake areas. It’s sad to see it all gone.

All the homes on the lakes and streams in the state of Alaska are gone. There’s literally nothing there anymore, unlike MS 2020. The photogammetry in this region is a big step down from what I was used to enjoying.

Something that’s worked for me was using a VPN. For some reason, my ISPs default routing to whatever CDNs that MS uses for content delivery is horrible. Using a VPN I get a much better experience.

Yep like so many things in MSFS24 the Photogrammetry is a big step backwards.

There is no photogrammetry in Alaska. You’re probably talking about satellite imagery and autogen scenery. This is something entirely different from photogrammetry (3D scanned cities).

Yeah and it’s lacking in expanded coverage and updated scan images. Jorg in October at the global event showed a slide show and said the US is getting many new TIN cities, expanded photogrammetry coverage, some area I think would get better fields and farm type data. But none of that happened. My home town area still looks the same. Still has missing POI on approach, still has a hard autogen photogrammetry cutoff that looks bad. And the shared world of 2020 and 2024 got delayed, + marketplace and more.

Very underwhelming and we’re getting only a blurry slow experience interim until we hear specific updates to these items which so far has failed to occur.

I used the form for the next dev q&a to ask them about that, you and other people should do the same. I’m really curious to know when they intend to implement the updated photogrammetry to the new sim (or both sims).

Took your advice and submitted that as a question. Would be nice to have the updated maps for 2020 finally!

I have used the form also. I know they’re not obligated to answer any one persons items, but my batting average for having items addressed is zero haha. So yes maybe if more people ask the same thing then in effect we’ll learn.

Hi folks. Do you also have a problem that buildings in photogrammetry look like they are covered with green mesh or algae? They are too green

I don’t know what it depends on, because for example in Graz they look ok, but for example Vienna or Bern look as if they were covered with camouflage netting

Have any of you noticed an improvement in photogrammetry in recent days in msfs 2024? Yesterday I flew around Stuttgart and noticed that it looks much better. Later Mannheim, Düsseldorf, Strasbourg and everywhere looked much better than a week ago. Is it the SU2 effect? Nowhere in the announcements have I seen a mention of photogrammetry improvement.

I’ve noticed a few places in the U.S.A that have improved, not the ones in City Update 10, others. I’ve also noticed an improvement in the PG trees, but maybe that’s just me lol. It could be an effect of the BETA update, who knows lol, but Micro/Asobo are good at not telling us about improvements of updates or extensions to PG areas :joy: As I keep finding out with Las Vegas for one

Not flown in Germany for a while though but I do remember the quality of the PG at that time, so I’ll have a quick look in a bit and report back.

If you haven’t already, check out my thread Which are your "Top favourite Cities/Places" with the best Photogrammetry to fly in? MSFS2024 + MSFS2020 LIST - #641 and it will give you an idea of what I rated them at. So if I notice an improvement then I’ll have to up their respective ratings

Those areas in germany basically has the best PG in the entire game. If they looked ”bad” a week ago it was just something temporary then or the plane you flew at the time, since they heavily impact the PG more then anything.

Fly a ”bad” plane and everything looks melted, fly a good one and you can see PG crystal clear as far as the eye can see.

I agree with you there, however some places in Germany did look better then others. For example Dusseldorf and Cologne never made it on my PG List thread - link posted above, due to them not being as good PG especially Cologne, compared to the PG quality in Las Vegas lets say.

I’ve also found in MSFS2020 because I Manual Cache every PG area I fly, I don’t find using a “bad plane” etc that it has any effect on the quality of the PG, maybe so for others who are streaming the scenery, but I only have 50MB Internet, hence the need to Manual Cache. Now MSFS2024 is a different ball game all together with it’s Rolling Cache that actually works like it’s meant to.

I can confirm Dusseldorf PG has improved immensely and it has most definitely been extended much much further to the north, I distinctly remember it not going much further then EDDL.

I’m yet to check out Cologne, will do a flight from EDDL to EDDK later on and really have a good look north of Dusseldorf too.

Last time I flew there was over 7 months ago, so I’m guessing it probably got updated when MSFS2024 was released or shortly after, but who knows.

My two cents for this topic is why photogrammetry is could be bad is that the many high building photographs has to do with the reflection in the windows of surrounding building
which would make programs make mistakes when it comes to (how shall i name) it false
Polygon placement .
Dont know how these things work, but i could see some sense in this thought.

That’s exactly my experience… 2020 looks clear and sharp and ‘realistic’. In contrast, 2024 looks blurred, “graphical” and more fake.
