I wouldn’t expect anything less as a response. lol 3000 is dedication.
I’m having exactly the same issue here.
I’m changing the file path location of my install for the update to where my SIM is installed. Rather than what it suggests as the default update location for it. But when I do this my system is wiping.
Happens on every update
Take my advice, always install MSFS on C: (about 4GB including xbox files). First create an MSFS folder on a drive of your choice and when whilst installing you are prompted for your packages file location then click on the box and navigate to the new folder. Alternatively if you really, really must install to a different drive then open the xbox app click on your icon and within it’s settings you can change the default install location for your xbox apps. You should still place your packages elsewhere.
Launcher not whole MSFS.
This is why it is recommended to move official and community folders to another location.

It really doesn’t matter where the packages go as long as it’s not the default location which risks deletion should MSFS decide to repair itself. However my personal choice is to place the packages on their own drive with it’s page file removed, that way nothing will be fighting with it’s memory controllers when scenery files are being accessed in flight. Note: adequate virtual memory is essential for modern PC’s regardless of where it sits but unlike yesteryear having oodles of ram does not mean you can delete it entirely.
The placement of these folders is crucial. For example in some cases problems with permissions

That doesn’t work either
Every time there’s an update with flight sim I have issues. I have reinstalled it each time too absolute nightmare
So I’ve hit repair and it has wiped my system again. Literally every time I come to use the SIM I’m having to do a complete reinstall of the system then sort all the community downloads again which takes days. Then a week later and update will occur again and I’m back to doing a full reinstall
Base MSFS2020 is only about 4GB. I suggest next time you decide to restore windows first back up your packages to a non system drive and set it offline in disk management.
I’m now very tempted to swap out the hard drives in my system and go from having
C: 200gb windows installed drive
D: 1tb flight sim data drive
And replace with a 2tb drive to just stop any confusion going forward
Problem is can someone just help spec me a drive to work with my board it’s a z170A
Currently the drives I’m using are netac purchased on Amazon.. is there anything I can stick in that will be better than this. But without breaking the bank at the same time.
If it helps, do a steam game back up, once fully installed. If it does wipe itself, revert to the backup. Will take a while to install but don’t have to download each time.
That will work. There’s no reason not to have MSFS installed on the same drive as your system or other programs. The packages are a different matter, you really don’t want anything else competing for bandwidth so give them their own drive (disable page file for that drive)
I’m using ms store version is this the same ?
No but it’s very easy to drag and drop the packages folder
Just looking to see if my board supports nvme I don’t think it does
Oh I do have an m.2 slot on my board. I bet I will see some huge speed differences if I change from what I am currently using ?
Be careful not all M.2 slots support NVMe. Also if your sim is running as it should I doubt you’ll notice a difference in performance, SSD is fast enough. However NVMe is great for recording in 4k and video processing etc.
Ah right ok. Can you assist further to check for me at all…
