On a scale of 1-10 (with 10 being best), how do you rate your Overall Enjoyment of this aircraft?
As a Chinook pilot this was disappointing. Although leaps and bounds better than the 2020 version that performed nothing like a Chinook. This one has a lot of quirks that act more like a single rotor helicopter than a tandem.
Although early in the release, it would be nice to see its developers do quite a few updates with input from aviators who fly these aircraft for a living.
I will try to do a more detailed evaluation the next time I try to fly the 47.
In my opinion the graphics of the Chinook are disappointing. Everything looks a bit pixelated and the quality is inconsistent. It has an ‘old’ vibe, like 2010 textures upscaled or something (It’s not actually thaaat bad). It appears to not be using modern texturing or modelling techniques available in the sim. It just looks outdated compared to most of the other first party aircraft.
The lights
The lights are an absolute joke. It’s just a texture that looks like the photo of a light.
I know, a lot of the screenshots below are closeups. But in 4k on a large monitor these things stand out negatively even from further away. And in comparison the H225 for example the helicopter just looks outdated
The flight model feels really weird to me. I just can’t keep it under control, even with assits on. During stable straight flight it suddenly just drops or climbs with 1000 ft/m. Even with minimal corrections the Chinook is really hard to keep at the same altitude. I constantly bounce between at least 100 ft/min up and down. It’s a big helicopter, I expect it to have a heavy feel but it acts more like Cabri G2.
Maybe this is how the real Chinook flies, no idea. But in my opinion it doesn’t feel good to fly.
Sound
I kinda like the sound. Maybe not totally realistic but it has some base to it and with a subwoofer it sounds a little bit like a helicopter is in your room. There is this deep blade slap that is really nice.
Systems
I need to do more testing and observing here but I noticed some things.
On some of the engine gauges the needles jump around wildly.
When I hit the starter for the first engine it starts both instead.
The rear ramp is not smooth when opening or closing. It’s really stuttery
TL;DR
Outdated graphics, weird flight model, fun sound
For now the CH-47D is absolutely no reason to buy the Premium Deluxe.
Love the interior.Outside it’s not that great.Flying the helicopter is a tuff one.Still not able to do precision landings and proper decent.I still love the beast , the sound is ok.Handling is a working progress.Overal a very nice plane to have.
It looks pretty good and I like it, but it is missing Tacan systems. That’s one of my biggest complaints for mil aircraft across the board. I don’t know why Tacan is constantly left out when its one of the major differences between mil/civ aviation!
Also as another commenter reported, its impossible to keep level flight. It is up and down between 200-1000 Ft/M back and forth constantly. No amount of trim helps. I thought perhaps it was just windy weather but I have swapped between clear skies and live weather a few times. I have been flying in colder places hovering between 0-5 celcius with pitot heat on. It doesn’t help! I have not tried in a warmer place!
The first day I flew this I flew in Anchorage Alaska, and it was really REALLY great to fly! Perhaps one of the recent patches has caused the flight model to get wonky?
This thing flies horribly, unable to control it even with all assists. Will not hover at all and does not respond to control inputs well. Unable to use it for cargo missions at all. Another failure of an aircraft
The chinook and skycrane are both terrible, with the skycrane being the worst of the two. I am fantastic with the other copters, but these two are absrurdly bad.
I’d like to know when we can get a fully functioning helicopter honestly. The helo’s entire AFC system is missing. Also, I’d rather like to suggest that the models be correctly adjusted to have the side bubble windows for heavy lifting and firefighting operations. Most of these CH-47s in real life have these types of windows in their IRL configurations while these in MSFS 2024 are in a “military” configuration still for their windows. This will aid in being able to properly add camera views to look down or or use VR to properly look down when trying to hoist, etc.
Despite the fact, that the cyclic and tail rotor assists are not working, there is also another one issue. Dont open the window during the flight. It just crashed my career mission.
It would be nice, to have the named assists working, as hovering over the ground is almost impossible on gamepad.
I’m not having an issue with the flight dynamics and I’m on the Blackbird Simulations version, in fact I found it way to easy to begin with so I’ve gone +26 on my cyclic for more response, left the pedals at 0, but really do need some braking system as my pedals are bespoke heli pedals…
It’s a dream to fly, as it seems to be far more stable and easy to keep in steady forward flight (with a gamepad) compared to other helos.
However.. it’s impossible to keep it in a stable hover. Just tried doing a simple cargo mission where I picked up something at the airport and delivered it to a forested area 10km away. The Chinook took a solid 5 minutes of fiddling around feeling like it was fighting every input before I was finally able to get the hook attached. Getting the dropoff done was just impossible. It felt like the load was dragging me around more than I was hauling it.
Then I did the exact same mission (literally identical) with H-125. Perfect hover over the target immediately, 15 seconds or so to get the proper altitude and get attached. The dropoff was a bit sketchy in the middle of all the trees, but again, controlling the helo was fine. It did what I told it to do, unlike the Chinook that was all over the map.
Not sure what’s wrong the the Chinook, but good lord does it have issues.
For anyone wishing for the real life bubble window views for better visibility that we are missing on these birds in 2024. I made these views for the cargo hook variant, but it can obviously be put on any of the other CH-47 models. It adds a view internally, looking down and out of the cargo hook hatch in the belly to where the sling load would be seen under the CH-47. The other two views are actual external views, since you can’t actually slew outside of the helicopter in the current setup. These other 2 views represent looking down from the bubble windows if they were actually equipped on these like the real aircraft are for firefighting and cargo hook operations. They are truly external cameras so you can also slew them around and create new external camera views for your CH-47 now.
Today i tried Chinook in career mode in passenger company. Despite the terrible payout - 100k per one hour of flight, the copter behaves pretty terrible.
Its almost impossible to trim it out properly. As soon as you think, its trimmed out, it will start to pich nose. The worst thing is, when you wanna slow down. First, you pull cyclic a little bit and then you have to push it. The helicopter have tendency to rise nose a lot, when slowing down. I ended in almost full cyclic forward to slow down, but not so fast.
At least, taxiing is now much better.
I finally got around to flying this a good deal lately and I think it’s not bad overall. I think the graphics are outstanding, but I dropped my rating on the flight systems a bit. It’s missing the ground following autopilot - as well as any kind of autopilot. Having some kind of “fly straight” simple AP would make flying helo’s a lot easier for those of us without proper helicopter equipment. It’s tough on the shoulder to hold a normal joystick constantly with pressure for hours at a time! And it’s near impossible to trip any of them to straight and level flight.
