MSFS2024 November 19th, 2024

Yes. There are bugs in FS2020 which are likely to be carried over to FS2024 irrespective of the re-write of the basic code. For example, one that irks me is the recent “fix” for loss of ATC voices, which they achieved by reducing (i.e. dumbing-down) the number of voices to two, virtually identical accents. This is now no better than the offline voices, so they needn’t have bothered. Lots of other bugs have not been solved, some going back several years.

And worse - with a substantial re-write of the code comes the inevitable new list of bugs not picked up before release. The problems with the SU15 beta and resultant delay (and back-tracking) in the SU15 release show show how significant updates to code often cause more headaches than they solve.

I hope I’m wrong but I’ve been disappointed by updates before. I feel a touch of realism would do everyone some good.

Yeah, missions are good but I don’t want or need to be scored on everything I do. I would prefer to just do things at my own leisure and interact when I want and much more organically.

I have played many other games with an open world but all activities are are outside of the open world and scripted. Ex Test Drive Unlimited, Forza Horizon

I don’t think the sim has evolved this much unfortunately, to offer a living world and so I think scripted missions will be what we get.
But perhaps with this new AI technology this have advanced? That would be exciting

I prefer real intelligence to be involved.

Unfortunately, I agree. I feel like the careers will be very scripted and very restrained. It’d be quite the surprise if there were more fluid ways to do careers. I do think when it comes to many of the careers we’ve seen, there are definitely ways that they could allow users to create custom scenarios where we’d still have all the freedom we have on a normal flight but with the right assets in place for us to do a job without our hands being held. I don’t need to be scored. I don’t want to have to follow things exactly as the game tells me to. That would kill career mode for me.

The thing I fear having used/experienced FS2020 (originally on XBox, now on PC) for 3 years now is that there have been things that have been broken and never fixed that are to do with gameplay/progress. For example-

  1. Bushtrips often broken, progress lost
  2. Training, progress lost (multiple times)
  3. Landing challenges progress lost (multiple times)
  4. Awards, don’t always pop, some have seen progress lost, now no ‘next level’ / blank
  5. Users progress suspended as we hit a file limit we knew nothing about (fixed eventually)
  6. Users progress being wiped (uninitiated as described in this thread)
  7. No backups available of user profile data

The one thing that hasn’t broken (thankfully) is the normal every day simming experience (doing your own flights etc). But with FS2024 being more game/career/goals centric and having more things to store & log progress, how much hope do we have that those issues listed above in FS2020 won’t come back and bite again in FS2024 which looks like it is going to rely on saving progress as a major feature in a say a career.

It’s a confidence thing really and I’m short on that re these issues going by my FS2020 experience. I have very little feeling of ‘goal completion’ (other than my own goals) in over 2K hrs in FS2020. So many of the current sims gameplay elements have largely failed IMO. Yet there looks like there will be far more gameplay elements in 2024.

That’s a really good post, Brag, and one I wholeheartedly agree with.

I can’t wait for mission objectives and career paths in the sim. I don’t think people realise how much fun it is for the added immersion of having some structure to your enjoyment of the sim.

I can also imagine its the sort of thing that will really be developed within the community and has real potential in the online world. I’m keen to see how its all going to work.

I do hope we get more of a living world approach so we can see other people engaged in doing missions. Apparently they’ve said you start missions from the inflight tool bar and not from the main menu, as with the bush trips. So I’m hoping its more of a living world approach.

Thankfully I care as much about all that as I care about achievements in other games: not one bit.

The only thing that is really an issue for me is when control bindings or graphics settings get lost. Luckily that didn’t happen to me yet.

I thankfully haven’t had a controller wipe yet, but I have had graphics settings wiped a couple of times.
The point I’m making is that FS2024 if it hasn’t had any improvements in user progress management/saves/backups will likely have the same outcome despite a larger reliance on career/progress saving. Which really doesn’t make me want to dive into a career mode say. Once bitten etc.
There’s not been major (if any at all) fix for user data/progress wipes in 3 years (that I know of) in FS2020. Other than the logfile max size issue.

I don’t care what it’s called, as long as it’s sequential and you can tell which one is the latest version . Don’t give them ideas to go on the XBOX version confusion road .

Yeah, that’s definitely a concern. That’s the kind of progress I would care about.

I don’t believe the goal of the video was to please the core simmer. It was mainly to attract new people into the fold. I watched 10 different Microsoft Showcase reviews, not 1 of them mentioned MSFS2024 once. And when I said, “what about MSFS2024”, most of the people in the replies were like “not interested, why waste time showing it”.

The launch date of MSFS 2024 seems to be synchronized with new Xbox hardware but the new consoles have the same hardware as the existing ones except more storage if I understand it correctly. Will more SSD storage really benefit MSFS?

I had a funny interaction on twitter with a UK games journalist I follow. When he pretty much slated the whole presentation as showing nothing new in gaming I replied and said at least FS2024 looks amazing. He said he agreed but he doesn’t consider it a game.

The flight sim franchise can’t win can it? It gets criticised by some in the flight sim community for being too much of a game and yet doesn’t get the attention in deserves in the gaming community because its too much of a simulator. :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

Could be that they’ve also hired more testers than they had for 2020.

Yeah, the showcase is meant to appeal to everyone. FSExpo 2024 is where they’ll get into the technical stuff if it’s similar to last year’s.

Bingo!

MSFS is a showcase game. A prestige title. Probably the longest running video game series. It has great graphics and comes with GamePass.

Gamers know the MSFS brand and even if they have no intention of playing it, it does the heart good to know it is still going strong, and that perhaps their kids will get a chance to fly on GamePass.

Folks will get to fly over their house again.

In other years, MS uses their Forza titles in much the same way during their summer showcases.

Look! Vehicles! More realistic than ever! From a franchise you know! And look at this one new feature (careers)!

Core simmers are but a small fraction of the MSFS audience. Most folks will play a little just because it is new on GamePass and filler for that month’s subscription price. And those casual folks pay the bills for the rest of us!

Spot on and there’s a couple more than get me too.

1 - Hours not logged in dev mode.
2 - Hours lost if sim crashed before you return to Home Screen.

Not on the scale they did for MSFS Alpha testing. This will be more like a prolonged flighting period. MSFS had so much new technology in it, that it needed the Alpha programme. I don’t think it’s necessary now. Hope I’m wrong, it was a fun period!

These sound like clear design choices, not limitations of the sim. I’d like to see all flights recorded in the log though, even if in developer mode, although maybe developer mode has an option to turn this off. Give the user the choice!
