New helicopters oscillating wildly

I hope those birds get lots of attention soon. 2h of flight in the 407 just now all good and suddenly it starts spinning out of the blue as if the tail rotor was gone (except it wasn’t) with no way to save it.

Marked solution in this post is the only help

If I’m not mistaken Asobo released a statement saying that they were aware that Helicopters werent behaving for ā€œsomeā€ users. they know what the issue is, and were working on a solution. But this was like a week ago. The helicopters in game do require more trimming than helicopters in real life, but thats mostly because they don’t seem to slip-stream as much as real life, and while you do have to hold forward cyclic in a real helicopter, it is a very small amount. not nearly as much as you have to in the sim. If I had one complaint, the sim helicopters seem to want to dive to the left when you push the stick forward, and tilt back when you push left, etc. This is their attempt at modelling gyroscopic precession. But they seem to have overlooked that this is already addressed in the design of the rotor head, swash-plate, and the linkages to the cyclic controls. In a real helicopter the system is designed to compensate, so when you miove the cyclic, the rotor head tilts and the blades pitch as necessary to impart a predictable reaction to the airframe. There is a lot of room for improvement in the sim for Helicopters, but overall, for most players, they operate as Asobo intended them to. For better or worse.

Thank you! I reinstalled DCS to make sure I hadn’t forgotten how to fly helicopters, turns out it was the SIM after all!

yes

Not only that the heli’s in my version wont fly horizontally at all no matter how much i oush the stick forwarx ,it will dio down a little then straight up it goes even with the stick pushed forward then oscilates like mad.

Also make a separate joystick profile for helicopters using this:

I have the exact same problem.

Provide extra information to complete the original description of the issue:

I take off, and if I attempt to go into a hover, I need to put full right tail rotor, then full left tail rotor, ad infinitum. There is no way to stop this other than moving forward from the hover. In reality, helicopters can hover - in the sim, no way.

SOLVED IN BOTH LEGACY AND MODERN FLIGHT MODELS

I upgraded to Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog controller and started to have issues with helicopters trying to roll on takeoff with no input and a ridiculous amount of translational tendancy once airborne - so much so that I was able to fly straight at a 30 degree bank left. FIRST CLUE: the roll is dependant on the main rotor rotation direction, and hence anti-torque direction.

Plugged in my old T-Flight stick and this was not a problem at all.

I decided to check out the Computational Fluid Dynamics visualization to see if there was anything unexpected. SECOND CLUE: The abnormal translational tendancy was confirmed by an excessive amount of lateral thrust showing in the CFD.

As translational drift is caused by the tail rotor and it’s relation to the main rotor torque, I checked all systems that could affect the anti-torque.

This might explain why only some are seeing this issue:
The problem for myself was that the power was set at 240ish%(!) - I have a slider (trim wheel) on my Warthog throttle set as Helicoper Throttle 1 - when the slider is at full, it is over powered and all sorts of flight model shenanigans happen.

Moving the slider way back (about 1/4) sets the power to the right level and all issues stop. I think it’s only expecting 12 bit values and it’s getting a higher resolution. There are other posts that mention the trim wheel doesn’t set trim correctly or mixture.

SOLUTION for me was either mapping the throttle to buttons or messing with the sensitivity settings to bring it in line.

Hope this helps.

Setting flight model to legacy then back to modern does seem to have improved it for me! The cabri is still somewhat of a handful in a hover but that’s my lack of practice. It does not seem to bounce up and down and pitch backward violently anymore. What a strange bug!
