All - Not starting can of worms here. But I have been building PCs, repairing PCs, and recycling PCs for over 30 years. If you want long term possibly 3-5 years, go with PC. But as close to the top of the performance level you can afford, or if building yourself, buy the best components, you are building for the future, not necessarily the present, why.
In the old world, Moore’s law said technology doubles every 18 months, that is now down to possibly 12 months or less, why? Comparision between, AMD, Intel, Nvidia, among the mainline parts, additionally, you have some other competition between Power Supply, Memory manufacturers as well, but not as much. Samsung and other memory folks are also competing, so prices are going to come down.
Mainstream processes which run on PC will over next 12 months also take advantage of the DDR5 Memory Specification, transfer rates between devices built into and added to motherboard will only benefit from that speed.
FWIW-I always build or buy TOL PC for gaming, (MSFS-XP-12 only), currently my gamer laptop is working well enough for now to not be in a hurry. 2023 going to bite the bug and buy new high end Gamer machine but waiting for problems to iron themselves out in the Nvidia Video Card arena. You will use PC for years, and although no expert, how long will XB system perform in MSFS as they tweak it and move the performance bar higher down the road. If Asobo is to be believed, 10 Year life, you will end up buying at least two more before EOL.
Where have you read that?
What’s INOP stuff?
“Inoperable”
So long story short, the OP shouldn’t go with the Xbox right? ![]()
I used to build my own PC’s too, however I’ve gone in the direction of consoles for life-simplicity. I found that I actually “play” the games on console rather than constantly tweaking.
I recently bought a valve Steam deck for exactly this reason and have spent more time playing “PC” games than before.
I purchased my Xbox series X specifically to run MSFS and although I’d like more complex jetliners I’m very happy overall. It’s now stable and smooth after SU10, there are good controllers becoming available and I expect in the near future we’ll see a large release of previously PC only planes onto Xbox with the addition of WASM for Xbox into SU12.
I understand the flexibility of PCs, but the just-run nature of consoles suits me better.
They are working on Xbox version stability so we can do long flights
Runs beautifully for me on SX especially after SU10. Smooth as butter… I still have to pinch myself really hard from time to time to remind myself I’m playing the greatest flight simulator in the world on a game console ![]()
Oh did I mention free on gamepass? Unbelievable…
Please don’t make yourself that mistake. A lot of Xbox simmers on here just want to fulfil their own narrative that everything is completely fine with the sim on console. It’s not “fine”. Just because there are some “I’m ok Joe” folks, doesn’t make anything fine. WASM still hasn’t arrived and there plenty of limitations, gameplay and performance wise. I only got a gaming PC a few months after getting the console version myself ![]()
You pay your money and make your choice. Xbox is fine for me (after SU10). I the Xbox with a keyboard and mouse and Hotas thrust / joystick.
Xbox is not for everyone but nor is PC. If MS launch an upgraded Xbox that improves MSFS in the future I’ll probably get it… I’d rather have Microsoft worry about getting MSFS to run smoothly than me..
I think that’s a good point. Xbox hardware is now 3 years old. It might be worth looking at a good second hand console rather than paying top money for hardware that’s due a refresh. Hobsons choice.
Being able to run MSFS on an Xbox is an incredible feat and will save you quite a bit of money compared to building a capable PC. There are more and more compatible hardware and software add ons available for MSFS on Xbox with more coming all the time. You will have a great sim experience for what is quite honestly a bargain. I have a relatively high end PC and have been simming for about 25 years. But if I was just getting into simming I would just buy an Xbox.
Don’t get me wrong, the PC offers more flexibility and with Vr it far exceeds what’s possible with the XBox. That being said the price of entry is much higher on PC and great experience can still be had on the XBox.
“I think that’s a good point. Xbox hardware is now 3 years old. It might be worth looking at a good second hand console rather than paying top money for hardware that’s due a refresh. Hobsons choice”
Hardware isn’t the issue with the Xbox, memory limitation is. The entire system has the total memory pool of roughly just a PC with a 2080 video card and zero RAM…
If the console had a total of 32gb of memory it would be a beast… console architecture is quite different in it’s inner workings compared to a pc so they definitely do age a little better.. but yeah the Series X has some very fast Memory, just unfortunately not enough of it
I don’t disagree just pointing out that the xbox series are now mid life and due an update ![]()
Also it’s cost dependant too. You’re not going to find a PC that runs it as well as the series X for $500. I have a PC which is 4x that price and doesn’t run msfs nearly as good as the Series X.
This has started to reincarnate into one of the previous dull anti Xbox threads.
I’ll paraphrase here, but don’t forget there are on here people who jumped ship to PC for whatever reason, dumped a whole load of money into that and simply have to convince themselves and tell us that the PC runs awesomely and Xboxes don’t. Based on their experiences many months and SU’s ago. It reads like they’re being positive but really they’ll hammer away at the Xbox every time a thread like this catches their eye.
And to get back to the WASM implementation. It is coming, just not as quickly as we’d hoped. And when it does become implemented and opens up more opportunities I can only imagine the upset that will cause! We’ve already been told that an implementation of the WASM worked on Xbox, but they weren’t happy with the user experience of setting that up.
So as an Xbox user I’m fairly philosophical about that, delaying to improve is fine, as I’ve got some cracking planes now including the Cessna 414AW. By next week there will be an incredible sounding A310 which doesn’t even rely on WASM (Asobo have confirmed it will arrive and be functional the same day PCs access it)
All - I think the OP should do what he wants to do. I use my PC for all my stuff and play games on it. I have fairly well sized office. FOR ME, I do not want a whole bunch of “stuff” cluttering up my space, so having an Xb for this, and that plus having to use PC for everything else, and cables going everywhere is not for me. But everyone is different, so it is what the OP wants to do, and how they want to do it. Enough said.
“By next week there will be an incredible sounding A310 which doesn’t even rely on WASM”
I can’t wait ![]()
Thank you for this - I too am so bored with console vs PC posts. Both XBox and PC can offer incredible experiences. It’s hard to argue that in terms of value the XBox X is unbeatable. VR is not possible on the XBox but apart from that with complex study level aircraft coming what’s not to love about this sim on the XBox? Changes to the sim and more hardware add ons are transforming the experience. I never worry about frame rates or settings I just fly on the XBox and it’s fantastic - smooth and astonishing on a 65 inch Dolby Vision screen. I’m a real world pilot and have been been using MS Flightsim since version 1 in 1982 so I’ve experienced most set ups over the years and I’m very discerning. My current experience is the best I’ve known. While I appreciate there are some limitations on XBox (VR, some 3rd party software VATSIM for instance) performance wise its brilliant. Let’s just be grateful that choice exists and let the platforms coexist in harmony - choice is only ever a good thing.
“It’s nowhere near su10 in regards to quality. Some areas have poor bing imagery but places in Europe like Germany and the uk have always been pretty good, but not in this build. Anyone who does GA or Vr will be disappointed.”
You’re on an xbox. On my PC SU11 performs better fps, looks better in image quality than SU10. This is in VR and flying GA. SU11 has not degraded image quality at all, everything looks better in SU 11 beta than SU10. DX 12 works now in the beta. I’m running 1440p monitor, using DLSS Quality, and every setting on ULTRA in 2D, and on High in VR. VR fps is in the low 40’s in addon scenery like Orbx Burbank II and middle 50’s most other places.
