New Weather Engine StrataWx MSFS2024

Just checked, it seems they have turned my kick into a ban despite me not having been on the server anymore (except for one second when I accidentally accepted the invite I initially joined with) ever since the kick

Instead of just Simbrief plans, it would be helpful if it could pull the currently loaded flight plan from the sim instead, and/or allow a text description of the route to be pasted in to. Not everyone will use Simbrief.

Very appreciate your information.

You don’t need to be sad to not have this kind of app. They have the problem and will have because their behavior is very clear and expectable.

I don’t have reason to buy and buy a new weather engine apps because in sim weather is incorrect. Looks like all users still hope that they will solve their problems with other app cooperate with sim. This is simply never ending story to catch users to their business. What to say, it is world and people now as is/are…

Look at your post rating, still no other answer or like given to your information  that says all just like on other Topics to famous aircraft dev who still winning sales profit on MP…

Will see what this app and devs will give to customers in future…

Does this engine alleviate the lack of “regional” weather as seen in the most popular competitor?

From Google:

“The absence of visible weather fronts and regional variance in [competitor] is a limitation of the current MSFS API. Weather injectors in MSFS 2024 rely on injected presets, which apply the local METAR globally across the horizon rather than generating an approaching front”.

Can you see fronts & distant weather when using StrataWx?

Not in my experience so far. The weather appears uniform in all directions, confirmed with slew mode to high altitude.

Both products do the same thing in that regard. If you had a massive cloud bank behind you, and another ahead, but the program determines the region you are in is clear both massive cloud banks will fade away.

Bummer. Here’s to hoping Asobo eventually allows 3rd parties full access to the weather system.

Looks interesting - Rex has been extremely frustrating and non-intuitive. Market needs a new competitor - this looks promising.

That’s the only way possible at this moment as far as I know. So you probably can’t fly in clear skies with a front on the horizon. If that’s true, I will skip this one as well.

What we need is side by side comparisons and when I did that with ‘the competitor’ I had a very hard time actually seeing a lot of difference. Often it was different, but neither matched what I saw out of the window. People overestimate what data is available for free, it’s fine to be able to do 7 cloud layers but I do not know of any free source that can feed that information.

Been looking at this product and I’m a long-term Active Sky FS user. All of this written above makes me wonder what is actually wrong with Asobo’s built-in FS2024 weather system. Is it better or no diff? I just want to have less external apps running next to my sim

Look at my report depended to LZMC military airport wrong data injected after SU5 update release, as one example you wish to know.

Personally, I think there is little wrong with the default weather engine. The input data is not always correct, but I seen 3rd party have the same issue. And the only thing 3rd party apps can do is insert weather.

It’s more about the complexity of the weather, and individual cloud shape and formation. 90% of the time I get uniform shaped puff ball clouds pretending to be large cloud banks. Prior to 2020 SU7 it wasn’t like that.

Both this, and ASFS give us some of that back.

You find “little wrong” with this? :exploding_head: I wish I could see what you see. All I see are ridiculous puffy cumulous blobs where a cloud layer should exist.

I think what he meant by seeing little wrong with the weather is that, based on the information easily and cheaply available to developers and the performance of the sim, this might be as much as we can get and personally I have had some amazing weather shown in the sim. Is it 100% accurate? I highly doubt that. While the ground and buildings of the world are just photographs away from being represented, the data to model the atmosphere even in small areas is extremely complex and sensors are few and far between. Think of how often weather forecasters get things wrong especially in regards to thunderstorms and individual cloud formations.

The points you are making are valid, especially the performance aspect.

BUT:

  1. we have seen a much more plausible rendition of the atmosphere with the FS2020 release version until SU5, so the engine is capable of doing better
  2. if MS would give developers access beyond the injection of presets, I as a user could decide if I want to take the performance hit.

It is simply pathetic that a modern flight simulator settles for such a mediocre implementation, especially after such a promising start.
The primary argument against opening up the weather engine for third party developers was that it constituted a core component of the product. I was going along with that decision, because there was so much potential. Yet, this core component has seen no further development for five years now, whereas all other areas have. That argument has therefore lost all validity.

In FSX days there was a program called FSGRW (FS Global Real Weather, iirc), and it generated its simulation serverside, the client injected the weather into the sim. Given the limitation of the graphics engine, it generated very convincing weather and was able to show weather fronts, at least I had the impression. If something like that was possible in a niche back in the days, third parties could work wonders with the MSFS atmosphere simulation, if only MS would let them.

Yes, but those are done by the sim with these tools. I also do not have seen a lot more detailed weather, as I mentioned before, you can make very small weather areas in the sim, but if the (free) data source is not that precise you just have more areas that are the same.

I want weather where I can be in a front, fly out of that front and still see it behind me and see another front in front of me. As far as I know (and I would be glad to stand corrected!) can not create that. The default weather engine can.

Right, and as far as I’m concerned that is its sole advantage. The other tools have live weather beat hands down on all other aspects. They don’t get it spot on every time, but I’d still take it over the live weather in all regards other than weather fronts.

What other aspects?

Wind for one, and turbulence for two.

Last time I checked turbulence in native Asobo weather, turbulence was 99% vertical, with next to no rolling motion at all. Many graphs in the thread below.

StrataWx doesn’t allow for this level of tweaking though, the shots above being from ASFS, and it doesn’t yet have a feature parity Passive mode like ASFS does.

When I have a minute I’ll run some up to date charts of weather in 2024 SU5.1 Beta native, and then wind from StrataWx. I’ll be interested to see the difference.

But again, the simulator makes the weather. The 3rd party tools just send weather, and turbulence is just a very basic strength trigger. Wind is also very basic, direction and strength. So the 3rd-party tool needs a better (free) source to produce better weather.

I have several machines running MSFS, one has a third part weather tool. And when I sync them to the same location, I just do not see a lot of difference. And when they are different, it is a toss up what is better. Honestly, I would love to be wrong, but I just do not see the big advantages.
