PMDG Douglas DC-6

Actually, it is still possible to have mod conflicts between mods purchased from the Marketplace. The “modellib.bgl” issue still exists from ignorant developers, and other problems exist, too, like Carenado taking over the html_ui Registration code, which still hasn’t been addressed yet fully I believe. And other things, too, as, for instance the A320neo livery issue with the livery pack available on the Marketplace (I forget who by).

Point being, you still have to be wary of items purchased on the Marketplace as well for Xbox.

And, sadly, when on PC, it’s harder to fix Marketplace purchased mods, and, as you note, impossible on Xbox. Hence, I’m very wary still of purchasing from the Marketplace, for that and other reasons.

Yes I’m on PC, indeed I guess a fresh reinstall could be the wise thing to do!
By the way It was a heavy load of work to manage everything like a single pilot untill the very touch down but so much fun and challenges, I finally landed two hours later safely!

I totally feel this. I’ve been trying to wean myself off the AFE and it’s a major amount to manage solo. It’s sort of dumb, because this isn’t how these airplanes were meant to be flown.

However, the challenge is definitely fun to take on!

Definitely!
Sure that this kind of bird needs a solid team in coordination to make it work in safe flight conditions but I’ll do my next flights using the AFE only for T/O and the initial climb in order to be less lazy hhh and to pay more attention to the global systems…
Also managing the four throttles separately is chanlenging somehow when we have to adjust the proper values for each of them at different phases of the flight while monitoring the settings, I like this way as well!

I’m a sucker for old airplanes, so I finally broke down last week and bought the DC-6. I haven’t had a chance to really fly her yet, mostly because work has been kicking my butt for the past several months and when I’m not working I’m too mentally zonked to plan a proper flight for a plane I know, let alone one this complicated.

Still, today I managed to make a few takeoffs and circuits around some scenic cities. What a gorgeous old bird.

When I fly this bird, I just get so much respect for the pilots in this era.

Ok…I bit the bullet and gave this another go. Tried both RNAV and ILS approaches into YSSY and both failed utterly to capture the GS…just flew straight on through. Up until the approach it works fine with the GPS so I’m not sure whats going on. BTW…for people that are getting it to work what GNS version are you using?

Are you on PC or Xbox?

I have both, but as of Thursday last, I’ve only been flying on Xbox.

I’ve got the same WT GNS 430 that we all have. I’m running a PMDG house livery (all we have access to on Xbox, currently).

I’ve flown flights via the Bendix and GNS and have had success with both.

If you’re on PC have you tried reinstalling the DC-6 (the whole delete all the hidden files thing, too)?

Ok uninstalled and reinstalled and the plane now captured the GS. Thanks for the tip. Although its about the 3rd time I’ve done this in the last 3 months or so not sure what changed this time. Who knows? Thanks.

I am on my fourth flight with the DC6, zero problems, and I have not touched the silver button. Gyropilot is tracking the GPS and Glideslope perfectly.

Which GPS setup option are you using?

The GNS 430.

PMS50 or WTT?

the 430 that came with the DC6 was replaced by WTT 430, in MFSFS 2020. That is the one I use.

That‘s great! And it confirms that the sim‘s autopilot logic is still botched :face_with_spiral_eyes:

I never use the AFE while flying the DC6 but fly her manually from start to finish . By doing this all my power settings are correct and my manually controlling my cowl flaps my temps are always within limits. On long flights when I use my aux fuel tanks I do all fuel managing manually. This makes flying her more realistic and a hellava lot more fun.

That does bring up a point that if you disable the AFE’s current mode he should release the engine controls to you, if ( as I think someone found above ) he isn’t, that’s a reportable bug.

Were/are pilots trained on single-pilot operation ( emergency, one would imagine! ) of these beasts?

I never use the AFE while flying the DC6 so any errors made should be mine and mine alone. The fault I find with the AFE is it isn’t realistic on power settings T/O’s (and climb and cruise.)As far as I’m concerned flying it manually is a lot more fun and a very good learning tool for you flyers out there who never experienced the joy of flying in the real C118 or DC6 as I did. I think PMDG did a wonderful job with the program and I have found a few mistakes that I can overlook!

Yes, I only used the AFE to get used to the aircraft - if he just read the checklists out & waited for me to action them before progressing I’d be very happy. I’ll admit to using the EFB engine monitor page a lot, though…

What power settings are you using for takeoff, climb and cruise?
