Real Environment Xtreme Announcement | REX Weather Force Weather Engine

I’ve never used REX, but I read this from their homepage:

Weather Force also includes a wide range of proprietary dynamic (non-static) weather presets. These presets are unlike other ‘static’ weather presets because they grow, dissipate and change over time!

When I read your post, I was going to say that the weather apps out there use METAR’s, so you would lose some of the dynamism of the default weather. Those who have used X-Plane will know what it’s like to see the weather change abruptly as you approach an airport.

So their dynamic weather, a “preset” implementation likely has some random element that can’t sync across clients.

I’ve seen default weather where only one end of the runway is fogged in, many times. I’ve seen banks of fog/cloud drifting across an airport, quite often KSFO.

I guess you pick your weather engine of choice based on your requirements.

Are Asobo planning on adding historical weather like ActiveSky had in FSX? That’s the biggest reason I bought Rex, they’re planning on adding that themselves.

Prefer standard in MSFS to be honest, REX was a waste of money

Not sure if historical weather but I read in this forum that they are investing in the weather engine so it should improve in future sim updates. Still better than the REX ■■■■, can’t believe I wasted 20 euros on that.

Totally agree. I was about to buy Rex weather force a few days ago, but I went to a friend’s house yesterday and he just happened to have REX Weather Force 2020 installed. When he showed me a comparison between REX and MSFS stock, I made my decision to not purchase it yet (if ever). Surely Asobo will be updating FS again. As so many of us know, the last “update/performance patch” broke so many things (it turned out to be a glitch in the “gaming services” app) for so many people - things such as losing our logbook entries and having to go through settings every time we launched FS, having to remove the a32nx mod and other mods, thus forcing us to use the a32nx developer version until a stable FBW mod (V5.5) was finally released. If any of the a32nx design geniuses are reading this, I want them all to know how thankful and appreciative I am for their hard work. :+1: :+1: :+1: Your dedication has transformed the A320Neo into a very near study level aircraft. I love flying this bird! :airplane:

I’m going to bide my time at this juncture with high hopes that Active Sky Next (or a new name) not only becomes available for this sim, but adds a host of new textures - i.e., wispy clouds, low stratus, CB’s, et al. I’d also love to see a brand new MSFS compatible Texture Direct package with beautiful high altitude cirrus clouds, coral reefs, moon glow, airport lighting and so much more. I loved being able to set WX conditions throughout my entire route. It was so predictable , not to mention having the ability to implement FS Commander’s IFR plan by simply pointing Active Sky to read FS Commander’s plan. Those were great tools indeed. They allowed me to use the tally function of FS Commander’s entire flight, including the time for each and every leg of the longest of long haul flight plans. I really miss those beautiful high altitude cirrus clouds, different sky colours, low to high density of coral reefs, amazing wave formations that different winds caused, sea mammals such as whales and dolphins that jumped out of the waters randomly and so much more. It took quite a long time for texture direct to go from alpha to its release in FSX, then PREPAR3D. Patience may be a virtue, but, as I grow older, I dislike it when my virtue (or lack thereof) is being taxed!

Thanks for being here. How do I turn off the opening thunder sound?

Hi there, I would like to know the thoughts about REX Weather Engine. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I like it, especially when flying the TBM at altitude (and flying to the northeast… tailwinds galore ) give it a shot!

Thanks for the reply and information…

The Live Wx in the Sim is hit and miss . REX does a good
job of replicating RL Wx into the Sim .

I bought it when it first released and I think I’ve used it maybe twice. I’ll try to summarise as to why I haven’t really used it:

  • I’ve always experienced bad stutters in-game when the REX weather ‘transitions’ from one to another as a METAR update comes through

  • Whatever the METAR reports is what REX injects into the sim globally, for example if you’ve got a report of OVC025, you have overcast cloud injected for the entirity of the area you fly in - it means you can’t ‘see’ approaching weather or other variances of weather around you.

  • Whilst I believe it’s now fixed, there’s been many periods for me of the programme just not working, or providing incorrect or outdated METAR reports.

  • I find the quality of the clouds it injects to be of a weird, low quality compared to the in-built weather.

  • Due to it’s data being taken from METAR, it misses out a lot of the other data in the atmosphere. For example a lot of airports report CAVOK or NCD (No cloud Detected) when the ceiling is above 5,000ft, REX would inject clear skies here when in reality it could be overcast at 6,000ft. When the in-built live weather is working good, it does a better job of this.

I’d say if you’re maybe doing circuits at an airport and just want localised weather then it’s probably ok, but even for that I’d recommend the freeware Unreal Live weather mod.

Hope this helps!

I thought the sim was responsible for the rendering of the clouds, and the weather addon tells the sim what to draw.

Yeah so did I but with REX injecting they just always seem to look ‘flat’ or less detailed for some reason, even the Unreal weather mod does a nicer job. Maybe it’s something to do with the data REX sends to MSFS and how it interprets it?

I would advise against it. The biggest charm in MSFS IMHO is the dynamic weather where you can see approaching and changing weather patterns. Since rex is based of off metar, it injects that one single weather pattern globally. That is a huge turn off for me atleast and is very old school. Msfs weather engine is next gen.

I used to use REX a lot, the clouds can look different, but I think it has to do with aerosol. I haven’t used it in some time, but found it did slightly impact framerate. I’ve been sticking with the MSFS weather system for some time.

Don’t buy it. Listen to my advice.

You should first make sure their activation severs are back online, having been down for too long since they decided to shut down the previous ones before having new ones ready and so people couldn’t activate their purchases until after the inevitable balls-up had been rectified.

I’ve bought just about everything they have released for flight sims, but I don’t know why as the only one I ever used properly was REX Essentials.

I realised after Skyforce 5 that all they were doing was releasing the same thing every couple of years, but with a different name and UI. Once I had tried Active Sky 2016, I ditched all my REX stuff and though I was going to try Sky Force 5 again last week, I found the aforementioned activation issue and after waiting for days longer than when it was due to be finished, I decided I had had enough of them.

The only sensible thing I can say about this is: Don’t do it.

The reason why?

MS/Asobo have said that they feel that it’s their responsibility to get the weather exactly right. They’ve acknowledged that it’s not yet where it could be and have announced a big overhaul of the weather engine, as well as the visual atmospheric simulation.
I’d just wait for that.

I think it’s a bad investment to go for REX.

Have Rex from the start and can’t recommend it

Instand unrealistic switch of weather and wind with Metar
If you enable smooth transitions, I get really bad frame rates 10-15, and it even doesn’t look smooth
No dynamic weather, whole place is the same
Winds aloft also change instantly. There is no transition. If you have FL300 270/80 and FL340 271/91, it will change instantly when you reaching the altitude. 33999 you have 270/80 and 34000 271/91. In my Point of view not very realistic.
It does not mater if you have a flight plan, it basicly renders local weather. If you have a fast plane it will probably change a lot.
All the time I have this Programm, there are different issues, regarding Program and server.
In my opinion it was sold as an alpha version and still is in beta.

Default weather is the best it’s ever been in a sim, I wouldn’t bother if I was you.
