Reflections look grainy, even if reflections are on ultra

Hello everyone,
I was wondering why this problem doesn’t occur on all systems, so I thought it maybe has something to do with the version of windows 10 we are using.
It would be much appreciated if everyone could say which version they are on, many thanks.

I’m on 20H2

Yes, I know that, but It doesn not occur on all systems, regardless of settings. Windows version is one of the things which may vary accross systems.

Actually you see less grain when setting the Reflections and other settings to a higher one. At Low there are fewer samples and they are further spread apart. It is also influenced by resolution/render scaling (the higher the better), and of course TAA which is necessary to help denoise reflections, shadows, ambient occlusion and clouds.

So to reduce the grain in the reflections as much as possible, set Reflections to Ultra, keep TAA on, and set the resolution or render scaling as high as it can go. Disabling the sharpening filter can help make the grain less obvious too.

This thread is about the grainy reflections though. The one for the pixelated/grainy clouds is that one.

Another sample (sorry havent scrolled up) of ‘impossible’ reflections. Midday. Comes from the sky/coulds.

Brief description of the issue:

Finally have some time to check out this game. Love it so far. Playing on a 6900XT on ultra preset with anti-aliasing disabled and V-Sync off. Game looks amazing, but in a lot of places I notice strange grain looking areas.

I’ve seen this same exact thing in Warzone with my old NVidia GPU but I never bothered to address it. Do ya’ll know what option to use that will get rid of this?

Provide Screenshot(s)/video(s) of the issue encountered:

I put three examples into one picture.

PC Specs:

ASRock Pro4 Motherboard
Corsair Vengeance 16GB
R5 3600
MSI Radeon 6900XT (Reference)
SeaSonic Gold 850W

Thanks in advance.

In your examples it seems that you do not have any anti-aliasing enabled. Even though there are three choices, TAA is pretty much mandatory to help clean up the shimmering and to denoise reflections, shadows, ambient occlusion and clouds.

The problem does not go away completely, which is what this thread is trying to convey, but it will look much, much better than what you are seeing now.

Glad you’re enjoying the game, and welcome to the community!

Does anyone else experience this - I have reflections set to Ultra, but seem to be getting quite a lot of pixelation. Not sure what is up :frowning:

You mean the pixelation on the building reflections on the water? The water has ripples and waves that reflect light in different directions. This look like a normal reflection behaviour to me.

Besides, I think the reflection settings apply to the glass reflection inside your cockpit.
See below on what the reflection looks like in real life.

Yeah, the building reflections on water (mainly) - I completely agree with what you’re saying, but to me, the way the sim is handling it still looks very weird. For example, look at the patch of water just to the right of the right wing of the plane in my screenshot. Those random pixels that are darker outside the area of reflecting? Doesn’t seem correct to me.

Hmm.. I see what you mean.. It just looks like how the building is shaped and the reflection might reflect the building a bit differently.

But to me this is just a minor issue that just so trivial. I wouldn’t worry about it too much. Besides, why is this topic shouldn’t in Default Aircraft / Airliners category? Shouldn’t this be in Scenery discussion?

I’m not worried about it, was just asking if anyone else has similar - just looks weird when flying VFR and exploring the scenery

I have no idea why this is in the aircraft category, pretty sure I put it in scenery (but clearly I stuffed that up somehow…).

Yeah I guess it might be uncomfortable when flying VFR..
I never really paid attention to it that much. I never flew VFR before, I’m an IFR exclusive virtual pilot. I’m excellent in IFR, but I know nothing about VFR. Hahahah.

Are any of you using Windows 10 20H2 beta?

Hi,

The clouds were recently somewhat fixed, however I am still getting a lot of noise on reflections and shadows with everything set to ultra.

Anyone else have this issue?

Currently using a GTX 1070, maybe its related to dated hardware.

Same issue even on a RTX 3090 FE

increasing rendering scale somewehat mitigates this

I am experiencing the same with grainy textures. I haven’t found a fix yet.

Ryzen 5 2600X
Radeon 5700XT
32GB @ 2100hz

Ryzen 5800
6800xt
32mb @3600

Checking in, same problem. Never seen a fix anywhere for it.

This is a chronic problem… this and the “dancing shadows” at cockpit. Maybe all those issues will be fixed when ray tracing arrives to the sim (and drop the fps to around 8 haha)
