[RELEASED] F4F-4 Wildcat | Got Friends

Would be better against a Zero !
Tell me, is there visuals of damages or explosion if you hit the other plane ?

No there isn’t currently… I doubt it’s possible but you know what GF are like with magic code!

While it may be difficult to show damage on a hit plane, especially if it is not another F4F-4, maybe there could be a modified Label, that shows “damage” inflicted on a target plane.

The important thing being, you firing on another player, especially one that has not “signed up for it”, should not affect that other player in any way - at least as far as that player is aware.

Maybe some would consider this a COOL feature, but since it is 100% a NO-NO on X-box, and that is a major part of the potential market for an addon like this, is it worth the development of a feature that MS/Asobo “discourages”. ?

Early days – time will tell - maybe in 2024 with advanced Missions .. who knows ..

What I was thoughting about is a Zero made by GF on the same basis than the F4F-4 (the Zero have less complex systems so it should be easier) so when the two (or more) planes are fighting, damages could be effective only on these planes.
Something like this…

Just to say there was another post created over the weekend to open the discussion on weapons in the official store and within an hour it was closed/deleted by a mod to say those sorts of discussions are not permitted in the forum. That probably gives you your right answer there.

This is probably the one thing Microsobo and I agree on, it’s not Microsoft Combat Simulator. But lets’s stick to the technical stuff…

Other sims like DCS and IL-2 (and even War Thunder) have large amounts of code to deal with handling damage modelling from weapons as well as the associated trajectory calculations to work out if something even hit. Even they don’t get it right but usually good enough and better than MSFS could ever probably do.

Even if GotFriends could work out the magic for the aircraft itself, you’d a best get a very bad approximation to what would have happened.

Can we please just let the artists at GotFriends have their fun with the graphics and animations and leave it at that. It’s still useful for cinematics but we don’t need that kind of aggressive behaviour in this specific simulator.

Got mine too!

Some impressions from my first flight. Taking off from Wake Island with an 18 knot crosswind and landing on the USS Lexington.

Very enjoyable and surprisingly docile! Love the modelling of the cockpit and the sounds, and the flight model felt very nice too.

I gotta be perfectly honest, though: the externals on my particular choice of livery had a slight painterly and flat look to them. I feel there is still a bit of room for improvement there, but overall you really can’t go wrong with this bird. Not by a long shot! I haven’t even played with the weapons yet.

I assume the external tanks lying around somewhere on the airfield for later use is a feature?

You’ve done it again, Got Friends!

Amazing Pictures!

Yes, the external droptanks you’ll find lying around the airfields after spawning is to initially trigger the WASM so that droppables work. So it may look like a feature, but is kind of a triggering event / limitation. For now, you can imagine a couple sailors didn’t do their proper cleanup! Haha we will look at this in the future. A special thanks to Touching Cloud for developing the WASM used in this Wildcat!

Ah, interesting and good to know. It certainly didn’t feel out of place on that particular flight. I mean, they gotta be kept somewhere around the aircraft. I gotta see were else they spawn on future flights.

@DigitalJonx
This is a great plane. Thanks very much

Just one question about the liveries.
I was under the impression that all US Navy aircraft up until late 1942 had a roundel on each wing, upside and downside. And the Red Ball in the middle of the star was dropped in early 1942. So shouldn’t the Butch O’Hare and Hammerin’ Hank (and probably even the Donald E. Runyon) have two roundels on the wings instead of one?

@Archer374 I have heard this reference before but in the instances of O’Hare I tried to use as many real world reference pictures and the F-15 hanging in the O’Hare International it shows the top left wing and bottom right wing roundels! Elrod was built from a few images that the nephew of Hank Elrod had provided also depicting the top left bottom right roundels! Runyon was a little harder to find any reference to but was created specially for a community members request! that image like the others was giving the same roundel placement! I will continue to research and see if I find anything that contradicts the current liveries and fix accordingly!

We’re the aircraft images from the USS Lexington wreck of much use in that regard?

Here is a good picture from April 42, with only a roundel on the portside.

The Wildcat is truly awesome! I was really looking forward to it, ever since the first preview shots (I think that was even before the release of the Wilga) and the long wait was worth it =)
Thank you for your awesome work!

Congratulations on the release! I’m certain it will do well.

And thank you for the Hank Elrod livery.

As to the roundel issue, I had remembered it incorrectly as well, but sure enough:

I had always thought that the star and meatball was on both wings for much longer, but a picture is worth, well you know.
