Hi all,
I purchased the F4F not long after it was released, and I’ve been loving it though all phases of flight – except for landings.
I found the pilot’s operating handbook for the F4F-4 online and, frankly, misread the landing instructions. What I was trying to do was keep a nose high attitude on landing and control the descent rate with throttle like I do with the F-14.
The problem I ran into was that the flaps added a ton of drag, and I ran out of both rearward stick movement and nose up trim! I ended up landing too hard, bouncing at least once, and then turning into the wind and ground looping — nearly every landing.
So, when all else fails, read the directions (again in my case).
Upon a closer reading, I noticed that the manual states the high drag from the flaps gives a steep gliding angle and that speed is lost quickly when the nose is brought up!
So I tried a nose down final approach with the flaps out and throttle reduced to start at 90 mph and gradually slow as I reached the runway threshold. I had plenty of rearward stick movement available and only needed a touch of nose up trim. Things seemed to work exactly as the manual said it would.
The result was pretty good:
YouTube video of landing at Henderson Field.
This landing was at Henderson Field, Guadalcanal (with real weather in MS Flight Sim 2020; Xbox Series X, using an Xbox controller). I floated a bit before touching down, but the landing was solid, the tail stayed down, and the plane tracked straight, right down the centerline.
This is less a testament to my flying skills, and more a testament to the fidelity and simple awesomeness of Got Flight’s Wildcat.
Finally, here is a glamor shot at about 21,000 feet above the Soloman Islands.
Thanks for reading!
