I just bought the Wilga and did my first patterns around Forwood Farm and Orcas Island. Agree with what everybody before me has already said: beautiful modelling, great sounds, great fun to fly! The only thing that I am not happy with is the feeling of being sucked to the ground once the wheels touch down. Now let’s try the floats next
We are aware and testing this right now with our Beta Group for the next update.
Cheers!
So is any mistreatment of the plane going over to your next flights?
The only thing amiss with this airplane is that you can’t operate the big zipper in the headliner. C’mon guys, you put that thing right where I can see it and expect me NOT to pull on it?!? What the heck is under there, anyway?
That’s where the sachets of pre-cooked goulash are hidden, I’m sure of it! Where else could they be?
I’m sorry. I am a purist. Goulash must be cooked AT camp!
But that’s where I’d keep my ingredients.
Aircraft are designed, rigged and trimmed to fly straight and level in cruise with the controls neutral. In other words, it should pretty much fly “hands off” in cruise in calm conditions. I’d be surprised if the Wilga is any different real life.
Yup, I agree – if rigged/trimmed properly, the plane should fly straight and level at normal cruise power and speed. Because the Asobo generic simulation flight model has to be configured and adjusted to emulate the real aircraft’s flight characteristics, I’m really just wondering what settings they provide to get the plane “trimmed” right.
I know some methods used in real aircraft design include fixed (ground adjustable) trim tabs and engine thrust line and stabilizer surface incidence offsets. I’m wondering if the Asobo flight model actually provides these parameters or the designer needs to adjust something else to try getting it close enough. Thanks (and welcome)!
Hey guys, yes you’re right, an aircraft should fly straight and level at cruise and be trimmed for that.
Here we hit a little issue. The Wilga has torque. Some aircraft have that set that to zero (Asobo’s default Savage Cub for example), but this is not something we’d want to do as this has no bearing on reality. Torque is part of a propeller driven aircraft, even more so on a radial.
So, what about the dihedral effect? Not enough to keep her level and cancel out a little torque roll. Next…
Aileron trim and rudder trim. No controls present in the Wilga (only elevator trim), but…we have set up both trims in the flight model itself so you may use the appropriate keybinds to set them. One down!
How about a fixed trim tab then? (a pre-set aileron trim perhaps). Considered, but that gives trouble when people fly with the “Auto Rudder” feature in the Assistance menu, which simply cancels all torque. An aircraft with such pre-set trim tab will then simply roll in the opposite direction and we’ll hit the same issue again.
To add to this; I generally hand-fly the Wilga, and am lucky enough to have rudder pedals. This makes it incredibly easy to correct for any torque effects (slight pressure on the pedals, and occasional tiny corrections on the stick will make her fly straight and true).
If you’re using the Wilga as a GA cruiser, then yes, you can utilize the rudder trim and/or aileron trim bindings from the sim to achieve a straight and level cruise.
Maybe someone asked about it already in this topic but I couldn’t find it.
Is anyone able to click on clipboard checkboxes in VR? I couldn’t, had to switch to 2D mode, turn something on and go back to VR mode.
It would be nice to persist these settings (at least “engine realism”), which - as far as I can tell - isn’t happening.
Other than that Wilga is an amazing little plane.
“Engine Realism” is the only one of those check boxes that is persistent, works well as far as I know. I also have no issues with the check boxes in VR, but every set is different. Using an Oculus 2.
VR clickpoints in MSFS in general are difficult, you may need to get closer a bit.
Thanks for loving the Wilga!
Thank you for quick answer.
Ah, so I think I mixed something up with the realism setting - as I had problems clicking it, maybe I set it to something else than I thought it was.
I suspected it may be only me regarding clipboard issue, since no one else mentioned it. I’ll try to get closer - I think I already did but I’ll try harder. Using Varjo Aero.
It’s really a nice feeling to have this cute plane that we all know and love, that has labels in my native language by default. Small thing but made my evening.
Maybe try closing one eye, in some planes that makes it easier to hit certain spots, on menu screens for example.
I’ll try, thank you!
Thanks elewarr
And that’s one very nice VR headset you have … must be amazing flying with that.
For some reason I have image in my head of a pirate with one eye covered shouting: “haarrrggggh, I’m gonna click you if it’s the last thing I do!”
Thank you, though there were 2 huge obstacles - telling/asking my wife about the idea of buying it and then wait time (around 3 months), but I think shipment sped up these days.
Finally I have no problem reading gauges, though GPU is sweating, and I wouldn’t say it’s very comfortable (I’m trying to solve it with a bit softer padding).
And you should be able to treat yourself to one of those after the sales rev of the Wilga are shared out, huh?
Good point
