Been flying the Wilga a lot as I bought one in FSEconomy. Already loved it, but it’s really cool now that I have “goals.”
However, the manual doesn’t really go into the engine cooling management – when to open/close the cowling/oil shutters (other than mentioning the shock cooling). Any guidance available for this?
Would love to learn proper management!
Also, what difference does the regulated exhaust make? Is it just a visual change on the models in the sim, or does it affect performance?
Keep cylinder and oil temperatures in green zone. Open cowl flaps when cylinder temp is in red, same with oil cooler. You should have both fully open when starting engine and on the ground/taxing.
In cold environment you may want to close them when descending with idle power to keep engine and oil warm.
Just went back to flying the Wilga tonight in Papua New Guinea and wow i forgot how much I love this plane. Flew the 80p and took the doors off. Had a really fun flight from Goroka to Owena bush strip. Was a nice change of pace from airliners and twin turbos. Looking forward to flying it more often. Any particularly scenic areas that anyone likes to fly it around that I should check out?
You should check out the Bush Divers VA. Big fans of Papua and the Wilga. 1-2 invitational flights per week often in PNG. Lots of old flight plans available as well.
I remember a time, a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, when the Empire did not rule the world,
we could land (almost) anywhere without sinking into the ground to the belly.
Progress ?
Alright so the new carriers on the market have moving carriers as well!!! Landed on the moving carrier off of Miramar in the Wilga and Fox 2. Haven’t tried a fighter yet, can’t spawn on it but you CAN land on it!!
Looks like runway 16 at KBLI to me! Great starting point to island hop around the San Juans. Anyway, I have been enjoying the Wilga in this area of the world, and glad others are too!
