Review: Aerosoft Milan Malpensa LIMC (FS2020 & 2024)

Test machine specs: MSI X670E, AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D, AMD Radeon RX 7900XTX, 48gb RAM

Reviewed for: FS2024 (native version)

Add-ons: FS Traffic, GSX Pro

DETAIL

I normally like to use an airport for a few flights before penning a review but in this case, I’ve been able to make some pretty succinct conclusions in mere minutes: the chief one unfortunately being that this add-on is best avoided.

The scenery’s greatest strength is its ground textures but ‘greatest’ doesn’t mean ‘great’ and they’re at best the good side of average for a 2025 scenery (which this native version is). There’s a fair bit of custom GSE lying around across the various aprons but it’s quite repetitive, with only a handful of different models. Some of this GSE is animated but one particular asset (a baggage cart) is so jerky that you’ll wonder if its fps reaches the number of digits present on one hand! Taxiway edge lighting is custom but approach lights are default and carelessly placed, with some sunken so deeply into the ground that you can’t even see them! I did wait a good few seconds to see if they’d correct themselves but… they didn’t.

The terminal building actually features some reasonably weathered texturing but the LOD doesn’t work effectively and structures look empty (and in some cases, totally featureless) until you’re right on top of them. Great if you like looking at a bunch of plain polygons, I suppose…

The terminal landside is so tragic, you can’t really help but laugh. It’s a total botch job that mixes sloppy custom modelling with default satellite imagery. Nothing fits with anything else, and the number of serious terrain anomalies is disturbing. There’s not even been any effort to hide or otherwise tidy up any of this unsightly mess. At least the ramps and roadways immediately outside the terminal entrances/exits are properly modelled — and a few custom vehicles ensure the area is not totally devoid of life —but the resolution is perhaps questionable. Speaking of resolution, it’s just too low in many key areas, making the whole airport feel more like something out of FSX than a product designed for a cutting edge simulator.

In the airport’s peripheral areas, the modelling at least remains consistent but that observation probably shouldn’t be mistaken for a compliment. There exist bits of perimeter fence but, like a lot in this scenery, they’re mismatched and don’t fit snugly together. The abundance of default ground imagery in areas where it really ought not be does a fab job of ruining any immersion this scenery might otherwise have offered.

Finally, night-lighting… which is a joke. If you thought Aerosoft’s LIMC looked FSX-like by day, wait till you see it at night! I mean, it’s cool if you like that 1990s retro game look but for anyone seriously seeking immersion, you won’t want to fly here after dusk.

PERFORMANCE

Finding positive things to say about LIMC is quite hard but performance is decent for an airport of this size. That said, given the overall lack of detail, is that surprising?

VERDICT

I consider myself a good researcher when it comes to buying MSFS airports and so I rarely end up with a product I’m flat out disappointed with. Sure, I still buy scenery that I find has slightly disappointing aspects but any niggles are usually outweighed by positives. In this case, however, the few positives are nowhere near capable of glossing over the almighty flaws. The good ground textures, custom taxiway edge lights and animated apron traffic can’t divert attention away from the frankly sloppy workmanship that’s on show throughout this scenery. If you find one area you feel is salvageable, it’ll be spoiled by a complete mess just a few pixels away.

If you REALLY need LIMC, it’s probably your best option (which says a lot about the competition!). It’s not all bad but, as I said above, every pro is bogged down by 2-3 cons. I just didn’t get that kick of pleasure I typically get when flying into and viewing a new airport for the first time. From the moment I touched down, I was disappointed; and became more and more disappointed as I moved the drone across the airfield.

It’s a real shame as a good LIMC is desperately needed in the sim. Sadly, it looks like we’re going to have to keep waiting… and hoping.

You said it, it’s still the best LIMC we have. The thing is, the creator David Rosenfeld is a flightsim scenery design veteran, 77 years old and he admits that he has trouble to follow the latest trends (and mainly MSFS2024 SDK). Actually now some Aerosoft guys came to help and at least they made the scenery officially MSFS2024 compatible. The latest news is that they’re working on improvements to the scenery.

I see it’s already been improved several times since release… which begs the question: what was it like originally? I’d love to see it updated as the basis is there for something reasonable. But as it is, it’s one of the worst airports I’ve ever bought (especially at the asking price). I always try to be fair and objective in my reviews but I really struggled to find plus points with LIMC. Night-lighting is the worst I’ve seen in 2024, Terminal 1 landside is a jumbled mess (T2’s even worse), the LOD is flawed, and off-airfield detail is non-existent. There’s a lot of work that needs doing to get it close to current expectations.

Originally it was plus minus the same. Aerosoft guys only fixed some things that were not compatible with MSFS2024. We will see what next update(s) brings, but I pretty doubt it will ever be on the same level as other main hubs sold under Aerosoft name.

And you’re right, even many freeware sceneries have better night lighting. I always fly around this ariport during day, then it’s just ok.

I’ve been flying into LIMC, trying to find reasons to like it — but the more I explore, the more bad elements I uncover — this time, incorrect ground markings, with 17R labelled as 17L at the holding point!

I have to be frank… this is just a ■■■■-show. It’s clear no love was put into this project.

And no ATC, tower and ground frequencies. No arrival and departing procedures and no approach procedures and wrong AFCAD settings.

Yes, all things I found out after writing my review. I’ve done two landings here: the initial one, and a later one in an attempt to find thigs to like about the scenery. My disappointment is such that I’ve never been back a third time. It’s just not pleasurable at all flying into and out of Aerosoft’s LIMC.

The creator of the scenery David Rosenfeld has just posted on Aerosoft forums that there’s an update coming, now targeting 26th of January. He also posted a changelog for that update, version 1.6.0:

Airport data - Fix the comm frequencies missing from the ATC menu
Airport data - Fix the nav frequencies missing
AFCAD - Rework the terminals (1 and 2) area to bring it to January 2026 status
AFCAD - Rework the cargo area to bring it to January 2026 status
Apron - Add Q-point markings at the entire airport (those can be use with GSX as aircraft release point)
Apron - Add missing GSE around the airport
Apron - Rework the taxi signs (from default Asobo to custom-made)
Apron - Rework night lighting around the airport. Light poles were moved to align with their real-life positions.
Apron - Fix Wigwag animation
Runways - Threshold marking fixes
Runways - Fix transparency of runway numbers
Ground - Fix all terraforming issues around Terminal 1
Ground - Fix train tunnel
Train - Relocate it from the skies to the ground ;)
Train - Fix animation issues
Misc - Passengers added inside Terminal 1 and in the public area of Terminal 2
Misc - Cars added to the public parking

There are also screenshots which I won’t paste here. You can see them in the original post:

A hefty delay till mid-Feb, though. I really hope it’s worth it.

It can’t be worse than the current state. So I’m glad they’re determined to improve it.

David Rosenfeld has signed off the update and it’s now with the Aerosoft team for testing. Should release in a day or two, as long as there are no issues.

Hoping it’ll arrive for FS2020 not long after… he did say it was a bit behind the FS2024 version iirc.

Two of the new builds submitted were rejected by Aerosoft for various flaws, but the third is apparently much closer to expectations so should be signed off for a release within the next week. I wouldn’t say it looks amazing, exactly, but it does seem to be a big improvement on the last release version.

Any news on this? CTP is also starting in a few days and all parking spots at this airport are wrong. They match for the main terminal but outdated for the cargo ramp

Coincidentaly this was posted on Aerosoft forum a couple of hours ago:

Well. I guess fake airplanes and fake airports can wait.
