RTX 5090 Announced at CES 2025

I don’t know where you are getting “only four cores” from with the 9800X3D as it has eight cores, all of which get used to some extent by MSFS 2024 and none of which get maxed out. I am not CPU limited at all.

I mean it benefits a lot from the “standard” DLSS method, Super Resolution. It can look really great when supersampled high. Hopefully we’ll have less ghosting with the new version, even on older cards.

But yeah, frustrating that the frame gen is no use at all for us.

How’s that cooler going to do at 575 Watts?

Nah, the problem is then ON your head, in the form of a high-res HMD… don’t ask me how I know!

Nvidia claims they reduced vram requirement of standard fg, but that may be again increased in multi frame gen. And no, other than the 5090, or a hypothetical in between GPU with 24 gb or more vram, it’s not going to solve anything vram related for MSFS. That statement about RTX 5070 perf being equivalent of rtx 4090 is pure marketting garbage. Some of us know how that went with 3070 vs 2080ti, everytime vram was important, the 2080ti trounced the 3070.

Really looking forward to the 5090, going to be building a whole new system this year, an upgrade from my current I5 4690k / GTX 970 (been going strong since 2015).
Pair the 5090 with one of LG’s new 5120x2160 45" OLED’s for some amazing flying / gaming!

It is kinda funny to see another hype building up because of some shiny pre-release marketing.
It is especially funny on this forum, where a similar hype led toassive dissapointment after release as the final product did not deliver what marketing made us believe. :joy:

For all these fake AI frames I am willing to pay with fake AI money. Deal Nvidia?

My hype will be met with a large smile on my face when I upgrade from my current system (I5 4690k / GTX 970). No disappointment from me!

I am more than a little tempted to try and get the founders edition of the Rtx 5090 at £1939. Given that this will probably last me for years (I still have the Rtx 2070 Super which I bought in 2019) it could actually be a long term economic option for me.

How many of us will be lucky enough to get it at this price though? Pretty sure the stock will be disappear pretty quickly (10 - 15 minutes?).

My other concern is that this is a massively powerful GPU and is small factor and has only two fans. Can these adequately dissipate the heat when under stress? Laptops can also have similar issues due to the small scale factor. I wonder also if the founder’s edition could be quite noisy too.

I am guessing that this problem won’t be an issue with the 3rd party versions rumoured to come with upto 5 fans. These will probably be upwards of £2500 (maybe £3000?) though which is not a price I am happy to pay.

The other option for me would be to get either the 5070ti or the 5080 and then buy again when maybe a 5080 Super comes out with 24gb VRAM.

Interesting times for those of us interested in buying a new GPU.

The FEs haven’t previously come and gone in one single batch. I got both my 3080 and 4090 FE a few weeks after the initial launch from an alert on a Discord channel.

Ha … Thing is that I have already been waiting a very long time.

My last GPU was bought in 2019 and I currently have a fairly high spec PC (9800x3d cpu, 96gb 6400 ddr 5 Ram, 16 tb internal M.2 storage, MSI Carbon x870e MB, AIO cooling ) which is now severely held back by the 2070 Super. I held back from buying the 4080/4090 in November to see what the new 5000 series would offer. Truth is that you can keep on waiting indefinitely for the next best thing to come and never ever buy anything.

I don’t think waiting for much longer is now the best option :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks ever so much for making our buying decisions for us.

I’ll be sure to check with you on all my buying decisions in the future. /s

Interesting, then MSFS2024 actually makes better use of the non-X3D cores on the 9800X3D than with the 7000 series. My computer doesn’t use the 8 non-X3D cores much on my 7950X3D. I deactivated all background processes I could find and basically only the X3D cores get any real work to do (in 2D that is)

I have bought all the series, I will not buy 50XX. I have the track record to prove that the actual performance increase is minuscule compared to what you pay for.

Enough of fluff and DLSS rubbish.

It does not work well for flightsimming, 2D and VR. The shimmering and ghosting becomes frustrating if you are a frequent simmer. Enjoy paying the equivalent of a months salary in many countries for small advantages

9800x3d doesn’t have any non x3d core.

Right. Sorry. That was my bad :man_facepalming:

And i believe that’s how multi ccd heterogeneous x3d CPUs supposed work under gaming workloads. AMD chipset driver ensures that gaming workload is scheduled on the x3d cores to make best use of the technology.

The problem with multi CCD processors is that while they are great for highly parallel workloads like rendering, they suffer if they need to exchange data between two cores across CCD. This have latency penalty and reduces performance. I would think despite some parallelization, gaming workloads threads share a lot of common data which means scheduling them across CCD will incur latency penalties. That’s just with homogeneous non x3d CCD. When you mix non-x3d and x3d CCD like in all x900x3d or x950x3d processors, one can have more issues in games if all the threads are not scheduled in same CCD. Threads scheduled on the X3d CCD will be able to utilise the much larger cache but the other threads scheduled on the non x3d CCD won’t be able to do the same and will slow down the entire process due to interdependency between those threads.

That’s why and chipset driver basically cordons off the non x3d CCD for known gaming workloads. This is called core parking i believe. That’s why when you are running MSFS only without much cpu intensive background process, you will see the non x3d ccd basically idling.

Sorry, what? Tell me more!
