SamScene3D announced New York City Times

I don’t disagree with NYC Times, I’ve got no performance degradation flying around here…yet. It’s other addons that do.

Did some testing on PC tonight flying into LGA and found that, with the CRJ:

  • Samscene NYC on its own - Buildings medium - No stuttering
  • KLGA Feel There scenery on its own - No stuttering
  • Samscene NYC + KLGA Feel There - Bad stuttering
  • KLGA alone + Bijan’s Seasons - Fine
  • Samscene alone + Bijan’s Seasons - Fine

Considering the stuttering someone had with Teterboro scenery with Samscene as well (and me with gaist shipping scenery with other airports and scenery), it seems something that Samscene doesn’t like to be overlapped or co-loaded with other sceneries and visa versa… Hopefully this changes in the future…

Flying directly over Manhattan, though, at airliner speeds my FPS falls into the teens (3080, 99% GPU use) and it stutters badly.

I think with this add on less is more.

The buildings don’t need to be be 4k and there’s a heck of a lot of them in one concentrated area.

If the bring the resolution down a little don’t think you’ll have much of a problem.

Inspired by your post i did a lot more testing this morning and found eventually when i removed ALL addons (apart from the R44 i was flying) like you found, there is a problem area in central Manhattan that is causing these issues. I’ve flow this route at low level hundreds of times pre SU6 with no issues.

I run locked at 30fps and all around Manhatten is smooth, GPU usage is 70-80% and my vram has well over a gig to spare. In the problem area (Approx. a 1mile circle around Times Square) GPU use suddenly pegs at 99% and the inevitable stutters and FPS plummeting occurs.

Clearly the underlying problem is with the default sim itself and something that changed with the SU6 update. Obviously sticking addons on top of the default exacerbates the issue (adding Samscene into the mix dropped the framerate to 5 FPS in that area… never seen anything like it before :astonished: ) but I’m convinced the main issue is with the core sim.

Obviously i think the Samscene sceney needs optimizing a bit as i did get a fairly significant FPS drop with it pre SU6, but it’s certainly not the main problem as far as I’m concerned.

I got an email this morning asking me to try out a new version of this mod. I think the resolution is half the size but I see absolutely no difference in the quality of the textures when flying over Manhattan. It looks great and performs as well as the default photogrammetry. 35 - 40FPS in 4K with everything on ultra. LOD is down at 100 but I think thats a fair point to put it for testing things, especially over New York. RTX 3080 5600X

Will be doing similar testing later, but that’s great news so far, and hats off to SamScene 3D for amazing customer responsiveness. I will absolutely be buying more of their sceneries…

Yeah I’m really impressed with their customer service. I thought this scenery was a goner and I’m so pleased that its useable now.

If you get really close to the buildings (and I mean really really close using the drone camera) then you can notice the buildings are lower resolution but from a few hundred feet away they look totally fine and I’m really happy with the performance versus visual trade off now.

I kind of wish Orbx would do the same with their Sydney city scenery.

I look forward to trying their test version later.

I think @Stuthemoose is spot on above in his testing that this is really more about how post-SU6 MSFS handles handcrafted assets vs how it did it before. I did some more testing last night and found that, for example, if I’m now flying into OHare KORD with that Asobo handcrafted airport and DD Chicago Landmarks both active, I get similar stuttering to LGA and SamScene NYC. In oodles of flights pre-SU6 that never happened to me before in either location, so something’s changed.

I read a post somewhere saying that scenery devs (freeware devs, in this case, not payware) were being lazy in putting huge textures into their mods, perhaps unknowningly, that were hitting FPS, and to be careful (they referenced one freeware airport where a particular notable hanger had a texture, apparently perhaps lifted from a photo or Google Maps, that was larger than the rest of the airport combined).

Given that MSFS is a constantly moving target and airliners with CPU heavier systems are on the way, scenery devs might need to up their optimization game…

I’m interested in this add on. Are the boats part of the scenery upgrade?

No, this add-on adds buildings in NYC. The boats are from GAIST.

Forgive a brief OT question, but how has your GAIST experience been? I’ve found some payware sceneries stutter when GAIST is around too…

I’ve not had any problems / conflicts whatsoever. Still, I’m the same with this NYC addition, it’s running fast and perfectly for me. So make of that what you want.

I downloaded this add-on, I’m a Xbox user and it runs fine and smooth. The glass on buildings look a lot better as does the lighting, especially in Times Square.

The add-on really completes NY

Here are a few shots I took, will grab a few more today.

My pics of this addon with the fall seasons pack…

I sim in HDR too :sunglasses:

I tried the beta last evening. I have a 3080 locked on 40 FPS and in every scenario I throw at it (save for the FBW A32NX looking at Manhattan from medium distance with ultra everything plus payware KLGA plus seasons and plus FSRealistic, when it dropped to 35) it was at 40 in them all, with no stuttering.

Well done!

Yeah, Central Park with the Fall Seasons pack was quite splendid!

How do you sign up for the beta?
The current version is unusable in vr for me.

I don’t think you can. I think Mobias7 and myself had independently reached out to the developer with the results of testing we did on our own and they in turn asked us to retest with a lower resolution version (which works very well). I imagine they’ll formally be rolling out an update soon… Very impressive customer service.

I imagine MSFS is difficult in this regard. It’s a moving target, so much changes so often, and now there is DX12 on the horizon, so who knows what’s next in sim behavior…

I want to like this addon but it kills framerates for me in VR. I’ve had to remove the addon to be able to fly over NYC. Looking forward to adding it back once an update in released.
