After exiting to desktop from the main menu it doesn’t seem like the sim is fully exiting. My GPU fans are still higher than idle, and the ORBX and FlyByWire (for example) won’t launch saying they can’t run with the sim running even though it went back to desktop.
I can’t find any process in Task Manager that would seem to be FS related to kill.

This was a known fault some time ago which Asobo managed to sort out. But I’ve had this happen a couple of times in the last few days but noticed it was around the same time I had problems with my internet connection. Any similarity?
But since you are reporting not seeing a FS2024 task in your Task Manager I am wondering if it is the same issue. Next time you are having the issue, double check the Task Manager (sort it out by name). This is what I am seeing in Apps (ms-store), could also be in background process if FS2024 is not completely closed.
I’m using the Steam version of MSFS2024, and I’ve also experienced cases where it won’t close.
I created the following .bat file and force-quit MSFS by clicking the bat file.
File name (e.g.): MSFS2024-close.bat
Command to include in the .bat file:
taskkill /IM FlightSimulator2024.exe /f
exit
This doesn’t happen in MSFS2024, but in MSFS2020, killing the task while it’s running can reset assist options and other settings.
It’s safer to kill the task after reaching the world map.
Yes I’m sad to say for the first time ever I’ve had to terminate the exe on exiting the sim. This was after pressing the fly now button in free flight and nothing happening. Cancelling out back to the main menu and tried again 5 or 6 times but then decided to exit the sim to save my sanity. That’s another regression back to release days.
Along with DXGI errors for the first time as I’ve reported previously in SU5.1 in terms of stability the sim is regressing for me. Completely empty community folder. Ultra settings. PC dedicated to MSFS 2024 so no other apps except os defaults installed. You couldn’t have a cleaner system.
For those of you experiencing this issue, have you ensured there are no 3rd party products active in the Community Folder, or running in the background for this to occur?
I had it down to just the PMDG 738 and 772, with nothing else and it still was doing this.
I dropped out of the beta (on this one PC) and the issue went away. I haven’t rejoined and tested with nothing, however.
So unless it is caused by those two aircraft in the beta, it seems it might be caused by more than 3rd party content.
Interestingly, I would only see it on my laptop and not on my primary sim desktop. The laptop is older (specs in my profile) and an Intel/Nvidia vs. my sim PC which is AMD/AMD. Not sure if there is something in that too.
My community folder is completely empty and I still occasionally see this behaviour. I should add that it is most likely to occur if I’ve put my PC to sleep with MSFS2024 running and then continue flying after waking. But I’ve been following this behaviour right through MSFS2020 and onto 2024 and have only had this problematic exit on recent builds.
SU5.1 Update today and now the Sim will NOT exit to desktop when I quit to Desktop. This happened years ago (cannot remember if it was 2020 or 2024). Has anyone found a fix?
Thanks for the reply. I did the fourth clean install of the Sim this morning and noticed that when I leave the Community in the default location (limitless–>packages etc) it does exit to the desktop. When I moved Community to where I want it on a faster drive (via the Marketplace–>My Library) it ceases to exit to the desktop?
Also my FPS (4090 and 9800x3d) is terrible since 5.1, like down to 50 FPS with DLSS Super Res. I cannot figure that out either. Thanks for replying I was starting to lose my sanity.
What is causing this issue for me is Mobiflight. If I have it open, it doesn’t close when exiting the sim (MSFS 2024) and then the sim doesn’t close also. If I close Mobiflight manually, then the sim exits as it should.
For me it’s the TDS GTNXi (and more specifically the Garmin trainer it runs in the background) that doesn’t get shut down, which prevents the sims (both 2020 and 2024) from cleanly exiting.
Happens every other flight or so, regardless of whether I fly with a TDS-equipped aircraft or not. Ending the Garmin process in task manager then allows the sim to exit.
Slightly annoying, but there are bugs in these sims that are way more aggravating
Hey, I appreciate the work you’re doing at TDS, as well as your support. And I’m not saying the GTN is the cause, but rather a symptom. This thread already mentioned a few other apps (like Mobiflight) that seem to cause this as well, so I firmly believe MSFS has an issue closing EXEs properly.
