I just confirmed that your theory can work.
I found the WT GNS folder in the Official folder. I cut and pasted it into my Addons Linker folder and activated it.
I then completed a 100% no surprises flight in the RV14 and nailed a butter landing without any flaps deployed. (I’ve found with my control sensitivity settings, the RV’s just seem a tad too twitchy before touchdown. )
Leaving the WT GNS folder activated, I then attempted to set up an identical flight in the RV-10. No dice. Skipping the details, suffice it to say I had Issues just trying to get the approach properly entered into the flight plan.
So I disengaged the WT GNS in the MSFS Addons Linker and repeated the approach programming procedure. It worked perfectly.
So, that was a good suggestion that you made Grolbu8146! Thank you!
Edit a couple of hours later:
I also just reconfirmed that the RV14 accepts ILS approaches and flight plans and flies just fine, whether or not the WT GNS add-on is present and activated. Frankly, I really love the very unobscured panaromic view outside the RV14’s canopy a bit more even than the RV10!
Oh how cool ! Just keep in mind that you won’t get updates for the content manager mods while they’re not activated - I presume they’ll show up in content manager as not installed so why would it update them.
Here’s another one which just occurred to me now I have addon linker in front of me. The linker doesn’t have a problem with nested folders, so make a folder in your library called something like ‘Content Manager Mods’ and drop the official WT GNS folder in there along with any other content manager stuff you don’t want loaded every time the sim starts. When you click on the top folder all the folders in it become active. This will help you remember which is the ‘official’ stuff.
If you’re not already doing it that’s a great way to bundle aircraft and repaints - as an example I have a folder I called “Kodi” which contains the folders for the Kodiak, the Floatiak, and a bunch of repaints. I just need to click on the Kodi folder and about 10 things appear in the list of active mods
That’s a great tip! I’m old school(or just old) and often can get it within 15 seconds or less with quick math to a waypoint time, 246 toothpicks and all… Is there anything in xbox land that implements this? VNAV is fairly well sorted now on the G1000, but the G3X setups seem more for looks and simplicity vs actual hardware/steam gauges in the aircraft. Like a Tesla dash, costs a fortune to engineer a real functioning dashboard with knobs and fittings over a fancy tablet. Or is this all just underdeveloped in the standard sim? Modern crap, you can just add code to make it do something, you’d think it does more IRL.
Some news for our RV´s users: An update on the Van’s RV-8, 10 and 14. We are excited to see the G3X getting reworked and plan to update both aircraft to the new Working Title G3X. Implementation of the new G3X will be done during the SU15 beta period, so we hope to have our planes updated by the time it is stable.
We will, however, hold back the release for a while as it looks like PMS and TDS will need updating in order to work with the new G3X.
A caveat is that hot-swapping between GNS and GTN is not possible. As the sim doesn’t officially support hot-swapping, Working Title used a workaround to make it possible with their GNS overhaul. They have let us know that the workarounds that made hot-swapping possible in the GNS and shared with the GTN teams will not work when paired with a G3X due to the complexity of their initialization and wiring configuration. From this point on, you will have to choose at the time of installation which GPS unit you want to use. If you remove the PMS/TDS GTN and want to revert your GPS navigator back to the Working Title GNS, you will also have to remove the SWS GTN mod for that RV aircraft.
For the above reasons, we need to contemplate whether we will update the immediately upon SU15’s release, rendering the GTN variants inoperable, or hold off until everyone is ready.
Lastly, it seems that the WT G3X Touch coming with SU15 is only intended to replace the Landscape variant of the G3X touch and therefore won’t be usable with the upcoming RV-8. As it is late in development, we are going to discuss internally if it makes sense to remove the two “portrait” G3X screens in favor of the new WT G3X Touch, or keep the Asobo GNS and G3X for the glass cockpit variant.
I would rather have the new G3X in the RV8 and wait longer for it. I know it’s unfortunate timing, but it would be a real shame to have a new release utilising the old tech.
Dump the old G3X. If you have spare space on the panel put a steam backup artificial horizon and VSI in there. The new touch is great, but tapes still suck.
Some of the thinking of selecting a standby these days has to do with keeping the display type and the presented information in the same form as the primary. It’s one of the reasons why newer designs have glass tapes backup glass tapes. Whatever one’s personal preference it’s likely to stay that way until the next big iteration comes.
That said the RV-10 is a home build so it could be interpreted as an owner/pilot choice.
I really hope that I am not the only one who finds all this very confusing.
Presently, I can’t find a consistent default GPS set-up that works simultaneously for both the RV-10 and the RV-14. Some say install the default Working Title options, others say “don’t”. In my experience, neither approach seems to apply to both of these aircraft at the same time. Am I just dense?
I am holding my breath for the G3X update to be more intuitive in this regard.
Although the G1000 is perfectly legible. even the new G3X is both crowded yet has plenty of wasted space, and even at live size on a big TV it’s hard to read quickly. Garmin should put Dynon’s VSI in one of the corners as an option. Guess I’m looking for a Dynon.
No you are not dense, quite the contrary you are as confused as we were.
The Asobo G3X doesn’t work with the Working Title GNS. If you download the WT GNS from the Marketplace, then you break the RV. If you don’t, we made it so that it uses the old Asobo GNS and that combination works fine.
@dreampage you are correct, but many people use these and it has become some sort of requirement. While we can choose to ignore the GTNs because they are unofficial, we actually enjoy using them ourselves so we get why people want them.
As they are unofficial and not done by us, though, we do not support problems with them. The bottom line is we will either release quickly, but with GTN support broken until its devs update their code, or hold it back so we can do a proper release.
What is supposed to be broken? I’ve flown both recently (the 10 was a relative recent purchase) and I had no problems. Is it just the functionality of the GPS unit itself somehow? If that’s the case, I may not have noticed. I always use PMS50’s GTN750 as it commands almost every aircraft.
I have the WT freeware and the RVs(I have every available SWS) and they work okay. Although I don’t think I’ve done flight planning, but have used hand flown AP and on the go direct-to commands. I’ll take the 10 out tonight and see if I can set it up with a flight plan.
I tend to free fly the RVs VFR, because they seem to me aircraft that want to be flown and swooped. But based on the typical panel these days seems most want to turn them into a poor man’s Cirrus.
As someone else mentioned here, I’ve got problems with a constant roll to the left no matter the power setting.
I have a Turtle Beach flight stick. As you can see in the video on the sensitivity page, there’s no erroneous movement. I then add huge dead zones to eliminate any minor inputs but still get the roll to the left. I then disconnect and try with keyboard (how anyone flies with keyboard is beyond me). Still a roll to the left. I also try engaging AP to level everything out and when AP is disconnected, without touching my controls, it rolls to the left.
I don’t have the issue with other planes but would love to fix it for this. Any ideas gratefully received.
Edit: I know about left turn tendencies but thought that was mostly at max power and torque. If there’s a lower MP and prop speed for regular flight please can I be educated on them
I have this too but I usually fly the RV with only a pilot so it naturally has a left roll tendency.
I’m curious now and will check tonight with a co pilot loaded in.
Already told the lady that I need her “help” with some testing tonight (she’s a great sport and loves to join me in sim sessions)
