Slow Download Speed Megathread

It worked! Thank you so much for this! I tried so many things but nothing else worked.

Man I feel silly making my first post what it was. I switched ProtonVPN to the Netherlands and its now rocking 80Mbps

I have a Gigabit connection and a capping out at around 250-300Mbits/s on large files. Small files obviously don’t even get that speed because they are small files. I suspect it’s a server side limitation by design which I think makes sense. Imagine what 1 million people with multi gigabit connections trying to download all of the content at max speed at once would do to their network

So i had called xbox support to help me.

They had executed the following as a .bat file

secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose

RD /S /Q ā€œ%WinDir%\System32\GroupPolicyUsersā€

RD /S /Q ā€œ%WinDir%\System32\GroupPolicyā€

REG DELETE HKCU\SOFTWARE\Policies /F

REG DELETE HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies /F

REG DELETE HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies /F

REG DELETE HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies /F

gpupdate /force

I had also tryed the command prompt

netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal

I noticed this afternoon that download speeds reached 100% just by removing and reconecting the ethernet cable 2 min. later but it only downloaded 10 Gbs full speed

1.1.1.1 VPN solved the issue aparently.

The game is being instaled for the first time.

I created an account just to thank you, your tutorial was at least brilliant, I was downloading at 13MB and after minutes I’m downloading at 100MB. Thank you very much

Turning off ipv6 worked for me.

This worked for me too, turning off IPv6 improved my download speed from 2 mbps to 50 Mbps.

@XTCQuinn Thanks a lot, man! This totally worked for me!!!

Glad my solution is working for many of you. One thing I was thinking of adding to it was disabling IPV6 as that helped on many occasions.
But it’s already been mentioned here.

I’m from the UK and started the download at 17.00 yesterday and I’m still at 71% downloaded (23.88GB) at 17.34 today. My speed is only averaging 1.2 Mbit/s/ with the highest being 5 Mbit/s. This is ridiculous!

I’m afraid that I don’t really have the expertise some of you guys have to tweak the speed. I’m afraid that if I touch anything then I’m back to square one!!

Well if it’s that slow and you started at 17:34 you wont have got much of it to lose if you did have to start over again. (sorry misread that I see you have 71%)

If you look at my instructions you’ll see I made the adjustments whilst I was downloading and it increased shortly after.

If you don’t fancy trying them out it might be worth considering after you have got the update downloaded so that hopefully you’ll have better speeds next time.

Many thanks for this. I think I’ll try your option after I’ve downloaded the update. I’m now on 73% (24.32GB) so shouldn’t be too long now!!!

Just created an account to say DNS was the issue for me.

I have a locally hosted pi-hole DNS server running on a virtual machine in VMWare via a Dell Poweredge server in my server closet. Google Fiber internet. Works completely fine downloading anything else on steam or for work, but for some reason with flight sim my download speeds were in the single digits of mbits.

Soon as I set my DNS manually to 1.1.1.1 to bypass the pi-hole, everything came alive. How dumb.

Dude no way. My speeds dropped again once I hit 75%. Tried googles dns, no dice. Turned on a VPN, and my connection is fast again. What the hell microsoft?

Free Proton VPN from Netherlands resolved my case. 30MB to 120+MB ( I have a 500 MB speed)

This is the problem I have. I live in the US. Paid over $100 for this game. Steam says I have played the game 71 Hours. But all but 3 of those hours have been spent trying to download updates. I got the game running last week by going to settings and setting bandwidth to unlimited. I then downloaded, not fast, but faster. After that download was finally done I set the limit again and was able to run the game for 3 hours.

And now there is another update. Don’t get me wrong. I am all for updates because they normally improve the game. But where my updates for other games normally download in a few seconds to a few minutes, this one takes days. I have a connection speed of between 90 to 175Mbps download so I don’t understand why it is so slow.

But this new download starts automatically. It does not let me go into settings first and set the bandwidth back to unlimited. Why do they prevent this? If I get to settings again I can try setting it to not update automatically. So now it is worse than before. it is now fluctuating between .5Mbps and 2.5 Mbps. I installed a VPN because someone in a post had good results from that. It did double my download speed but that’s still only 5.0Mbps. How can they do this to people? Have none of the game creators even thought about these issues?

So the Idea that I pay so much for something I have not been able to use for the first month I have it is crazy. I guess I’m the crazy one for thinking a company that has been around so long can fail so badly.

Does my post improve the conversation? It will if the makers of this game Finally decide to make improvements to how downloads are done.

Thanks for all the recommendations!

@ElemntalM1st - I saw a similarity with you, because i use PiHole as well.. I disabled my ipv6 and sat my ipv4 dns to 1.1.1.1 to bypass PiHole, and then i plugged out my network cable and back in while it was downloading FS2020 - turns out now it doubled my speed from 100 mbit to 250 mbit.

Not sure which step that solved it, but thanks!

I wish the person responsible for the servers in this game to use the Internet at a speed of 1 Mbits/s all his life. It’s a great game, but the way it downloads the files is torture. I have to download a regular update for several days. I have tried all the methods, nothing helps. All other games are downloaded at the fastest available speed. Why can’t I use the Steam installer? I bought the full edition, all the add-ons, I love this game. But I’ve been downloading it longer than playing it. I am very angry and I hate those who are responsible for this!

I made an account to thank you !
Turning it to Disable then back to Normal did the trick to me!

Now this is where it gets a bit uncertain in that the autotuning level=normal part is usually the default setting so you may already be set with that but I had it set to disabled.
So if you don’t see any change try setting it to disabled first then back to normal again.

really? a lot of users dont have these problems, see posts just above.
