SU5 graphics quality

Updated my original post above: SU5 graphics quality - #552 by scriptkid

@AnimalMarble975 I tried to reproduce your screenshot,

@CptLucky8 I tried to respond a bit on your post after mine

Cheers.

P.S. If someone says i’m talking BS (because it’s how i have understood it), please let me kow

Before SU5, I didn’t really play MSFS much because the fps was too low or quality too poor for my system. I just enjoyed Xplane more. I play in VR on a 2080ti. After SU5, the performance improvement was so great that I now play MSFS all the time and love it. I have not really noticed a drop in quality, I have been too busy enjoying the fps gains! So I really don’t get all the uproar about SU5. For me it was a game changer in a good way.

The lightning is impressive and favors the ambience of this picture! Yet the low detailled fuzzyness of these SU5 clouds is somehow the first thing that catches my eyes.. Seems like once you start noticing, you cannot unsee it anymore

Well, that’s because i’m a stupid ■■■ :confounded:… the image is @#$# up because i used the regular “printscreen” instead of really capture with HDR.

But, i get what you are saying here. The image does not really resembles on what i’ve seen on screen, it had more detail, but i’m getting what is meant (like i said, it wasn’t my most bright action).

The weather was by the way created with the https://nl.flightsim.to/file/6079/dnbof-weather-presets-pack by @DNBOF if i’m correct the atmospheric setting. It was faster then flying over earth to find something that resembled

You don’t get it, because your focus is just different mate! There are many people like you who are thankful for any fps they can get because of the limitations of their rigs and i can fully understand that!

Yet i myself have a powerful enough rig that allowed me already before SU5 to enjoy this game in ultra mode with decent fps. A performance gain for me was actually rather unnecessary.

Moreover since August last year i was delighted by the overwhelming graphics that the ultra mode brought with it.. and now here comes the crux.. “your” performance gain was traded for “my” graphics fidelity so to say.

I dont want to say i am not happy for you to have a decent running sim now, i really am! But still i guess i am allowed to shed some tears over the loss of immersive graphics quality that the recent update brought with it

No worries mate! Just tried out your nvidia optimizations, but couldnt notice any difference to be honest.

Btw, how can i enabled the HDR10 feature in the sim? Its off and greyed out, yet my Monitor (as well as my connected LG TV) actually support the HDR10 feature.

Btw had a flight session over 2h from Nürnberg (Germany) to Burgos (Spain) and for the first time i seemed to have noticed a severe performance drop at the end of my flight.. from about 70-80 fps at the beginning to about 30-40 at the end. Seems like this “memory leak”, or how the community calls it, really seems to be a thing. Was rather annoying :frowning:

edit: thx for this weather pack! I will try out

Cheers!

First you need to enable it windows 10, press windows key, type “windows hd color settings”

Enable hdr.

When enabled, go down to the slider to set your prefered brightness

In my case i had to slide it all the way to the right, which produced in my case the best result. Tap the video shown to view the difference.

Then, start the sim. I found the sim does not adjust while running. Did not checked exactly what happened, but it looked like the sim applied the setting when started.

P.S. Don’t use printscreen . If i’m correct, and you have nvidia, that can take hdr screens, maybe xbox game bar? Not sure about the last one.

Haven been reading about the performance degredation. Have not yet encountered it myself, or my old brain is just lacking following initial fps. It could be a leak, i dunno.

Ahhh that did the trick!! I already had the HDR settings enabled in Windows 10 but always after i started the sim, not before.. now it works like a charm  Awesome thanks you!

I really hope they improve this HDR feature in windows 11 drastically. I read that it then automatically switches between HDR/non HDR when in Desktop/Gamemode.. would be a blessing

edit:

I made one and sent it to my friend via whatsapp again. It almost looks identically charming there as on my PC with activated HDR. But i know what you mean, in other games i often notice a somewhat “dull” sepia orange/brown finish on every screenshot with HDR enabled

That makes sense and that is a very fair point! The original post was a lot less nuanced and was basically saying that SU5 was trash for everyone and that is what I reacted to.
The ideal solution would be for Asobo to bring back those graphics fidelity items that were removed for performance sake, and make them optional with some added graphics settings. I believe that Asobo announced they were going to do just that for some of the graphics issue after SU5.

Thanks for the tip, pretty neat addon, I got this one just now

No, this is a low IQ take and on other forums you would be relentlessly mocked for it (not saying I advocate for it, no bully, tho there is hope your government locks down internet access as the next overstepping of their powers and we miss out on takes like this for a few months)

With that being out of the way: no, how much you spend on your PC says absolutely nothing about your knowledge of computers. You can walk into some boutique PC place and get fleeced for a specific meme amount of cash while getting nothing to impressive in return. Stranger things have happened at sea. Also, flexing it in your funny money only works of you discount the fact that it’s worth 75 cents to an actual dollar…

Tally-ho!

FS is back alive, after 10hours Mod sort. puhhh

But now the filmgrain in VR is back. Arghh, SU05 makes me mad
Any ideas?

Filmgrain for flat and VR are already disable in config.opt

OK, firstly, I’ve been involved in Gaming since 1988 and my passion is for life - You don’t understand, or don’t care that this means ‘saving for hardware’ and learning it to it’s fullest in the quest to squeeze every bit of power, is as important as ‘saving for a new car’. Life-long gamers/designers/game-artists that have progressed through entry-level all the way to hi-end would never make excuses about low-end hardware but instead talk about the next stage of their PC Build - for me it’s my new ROG RTX 3080oc that just arrived and finally completes my build.
I support those that think the same as me and try to stop those that mock others who try to pass down knowledge. As for your ‘insult’ about locking down my net and using politics as your segway, it’s quite a low iQ on your part don’t your think  Anyway, I’m off to install this behemoth of a graphics card into my i9 ROG build.

Cheerybye!

Oh wow… uhm… just… uhh… uhm… ok? :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

“Salty” may not do justice to the simmering rage.

Folks bought NVME drives, high-speed networking, 3080tis which cost twice the amount of the 2080s being replaced, 64G RAM.

Only to see toddler sculpture renderings of great cities instead of models.

The default New York, especially Coney Island, is presented shamefully. The photogrammetry UK is best left disabled and forgotten, with Orbyx handling the heavy lifting.

There should be two versions of the game, One for the console crowd, and one that takes full advantage of PC gear. One for those who fly low, slow, and close-up.

The modern consoles are truly powerful machines, but can’t actually be bought in a shop or outside some online lottery. But I learned, more than a decade ago (after the first Assassin’s Creed and Devil May Cry 4) that console wars were irrelevant, and a well-built PC was the way forward.

Yes, the first games I played were pac-man and space invaders on atari in early 80s. Then I went on to c64 with such lovely titles like Elite, Pirates, Ultimas (IV is my all time favorite game) and Gunship, off the top of my head what has left permanent mark in memory. At the end of the 80s I got my first PC, a 286. Sid Meier’s Civilizations were for me the top of that era. In the 2000s I started playing the MMORPGs like WoW, Vanguard, DDO, LotRO etc… Yet, I would not call gaming my “passion”, just a leisure time hobby. Do I have more “knowledge” about gaming I feel like passing on? No.

Yeah, most of mine are on trees. It’s very distracting when trying to look at some cool scenery. Some buildings as well, especially in big cities. But for me, it’s mostly trees that shimmer.

Now THAT is what I am talking about. That’s exactly what I was seeing a few months ago. I LOVED flying in clouds and did it quite often because the vistas were simply mind blowing!!! Now I find I want to fly in clear skies only because the clouds, TO ME, look like cartoon clouds. Seriously, TO ME, they look worse than the clouds I had in FSX and P3Dv4 using REX add-ons!!! I own the new REX WX Force. Bought it the same day I bought the sim last year on opening week. Even their clouds, NOW, look like ■■■■. Was talking with a couple of the devs (I used to beta test for them) this week and they said they have been getting slammed with tickets about quality ever since the latest update.

Seems MS is upsetting MANY 3rd party creators.

As stated in many threads by many people. We have nothing against the Xbox version. Just keep IT off our PC’s!!!

I want my graphic fidelity back. Please!

Greg

In case anyone missed it, here is a link to some pics I took last night. They are only compressed as much as they are jpeg level 12 pics. But I put them on one of my websites so you can see the picture as I see it without the forum compression you would have here.

If you want to see them full size simply open them in a new tab (I was too lazy to set all that up automatically…lol)

I NEVER had clouds and ground textures look that bad since I bought FS2020. I have run Ultra since day one. 99% of the time I fly VFR under 15,000’ so I can enjoy the scenery. And I do so between 45-60fps. Not bad for a i7-8700k OC’d to 5.1, Nvidia 2060 gaming pro 6gb OC (not OC’d…but maybe soon) with 32gigs ram. Monitors are 1920x1080 AOC 24". Nothing outrageous and not insanely expensive. It’s the 3rd edition of this computer that I built from scratch years ago and upgrade as I can. Oh, and to really blow your minds…I run 27 usb external devices on this thing. 11 of those are external drives. 5 internal SSD drives and 11 external for a total of 87TB’s.

About to get a new 1TB SSD for FS as it’s almost filled up the 250gig drive I gave it. UGH!!! This next update will probably be the last until I get a new drive. The thought of having to reinstall AGAIN (done it over 20 times for various reasons) does NOT make me happy … hoping I can dump one onto the other but windows doesn’t usually like that… we shall see.

SORRY for the off topic stuff… But thought we could all use a break.
Have a great night all!!!

Greg

Direct quote from a 3rd party company:

Hello,

This issue you are experiencing is outside the scope of our program. The sim clouds do not utilize textures as they are shader-based.

WU5 destroyed the fidelity, hopefully they will revert these changes.

Sincerely

REX Quality Assurance Team

It’s not just users anymore… Companies are dropping add-ons because of this. Hope Asobo will just fix the issues and let’s get back to adding NEW goodies!!!
