Terrible apocalyptic photogrammetry of Vienna

Same here, it’s impressive since the release. Would be interesting to know from who (bing themselves, governance, private companies, …) they got the data. Is usually go to Nuremberg to check if bing data streaming still works . Now we just need EDDN as scenery, but that’s a different topic.

What Asobo could offer or advice is an re-set of the streaming option + the rolling cache after every SU + WU.

the first image is how vienna looks for me and the second is frankfurt
both same settings

I guess the data is from bing. But they probably got their data from private companies. I assume Bing has some connections with data recources in different parts of the world that deliver this photogrammetry data.

I doubt governments will invest in this. They’re probably only interested in satalite images only. I think most of the photogrammetry will come from private pilots/photographers.

To be honest i never did anything with rolling cache (always off) and neither did i reset graphics settings or anything on a regular base. I fiddle around with it sometimes but this never resulted in sudden loss or gain in photogrammetry quality. I think most of the troubles people experience has more to do with internet conncetion problems or hardware combinations. Looks like some of ous are lucky and others not so. Without any clue to what causes this.

Now im facing one ctd after the other, i‘m told to insert game disc, it‘s a complete mess, cant use the simulator any more. its the first time for me since release that i‘ve got these massive problems

Uhm… no

Creating photogrammetric data - taking LOTS of photos, in other words - takes precise flying maneuvers, creating a regular pattern while flying over a densely populated area. Flying such a „stripes“-pattern over a city at low altitude is something that requires permission, and I guess it would be hard, if not impossible, to get for private persons.

Also, you need expensive and calibrated camera equipment which is triggered in precise time intervals. Not to mention the required flying skills.

So that is clearly something done by companies that specialise in this kind of aerial photography.

UPDATE: Hmmm, I completely forgot about drones, of course! Random search result:

But still, that is not your 1500$ toy drone, those are „heavy-lifting drones“. And you still need permission from the city.

UPDATE: Yes, that‘s what we‘re talking about:

Prices in the high 10‘000s  And a single camera alone costs you up to 7000 CHF (a „normal price“ for a good DSLR camera ;))

But yes, nothing stops you from creating your own photogrammetry from your own house with a cheaper drone. But you need to have a LOT of patience (precise GPS and camera data is king!).

Yes, you are right. there is a video on youtube explaining this. he was showing buildings at an airport which should have windows and more detail, when he cycled the settings, he then showed the same building in all its glory.

Doubtful, because the data keeps streaming in the background filling in more detail. No matter how slow your connection is, eventually every detail should be filled in, when you are circling over an area or even using a cached are that is fully downloaded. Also, if it were a connection problem, why do look other photogrammetry cities like San Francisco or Los Angeles so good? Shouldn’t they suffer from the same connection issues?

No, Vienna, just like London is simply based on data is not processed very well or that is based on sub par raw data in the first place.

This video seems to show that the PG data is great and that its implementation is correct. Were it not these scenes would be impossible. It leads to the conclusion that the problems being experienced are due to problems getting the data into the sim or problems processing it by the sim. There are probably many changes that could have caused one or both of those, but overloaded Azure servers jump to mind (caused by adding Xbox users to the demand for data). Is it possible that they have multiple datasets for new PG cities and stream sets that are less complete when demands are high?

Yes. I meant private pilots (who will be hired by companies) / photographers (companies)

I doubt those companies have their own pilots😉

I noticed this myself, I fly in SoCal a whole lot. Somtimes it looks fine (generally when I am pretty low) while other times it looks like a bunch of B-52s made a pass at it, lol.

I think there are a few home made bits of photogrammetry available over on flightsim.to for the sim. If I remember correctly someone in Poland has done some DIY PG for a few Polish castles using a decent drone. No idea how good they are. I’d love to give it a go doing small scale PG. It does look really interesting

You’re totally right though. Doing city scale PG is a whole different thing. It requires huge resources and knowhow.

There are so many different experiences, I don’t think it’s because of the servers. I think the problem is more likely to be on the user side. Either weak internet connection, weak wifi or weak graphics card or wrong settings I do not exclude, otherwise there would probably not be these differences.

I dunno, I have a 500 / 500 plan and getting actual speeds that far exceed the recommend for MSFS. Granted I am using WiFi (5G but signal is strong) and I have heard those hardwired (and also have very high speeds) with issues. GPU wise I run a 3070 maxed out. Here is an example of what I see around Cincinnati, around Los Angeles and San Diego it doesn’t look this good unless I am near the ground…

Rolling Cache? I always have at least 200 GB set or more…

Set to 40 on an SSD.

Maybe once - on a trial basis - load the area into the manual cache and then view the result.

Will try, thanks!

since yesterday I have no buildings at all in Vienna with PG :face_with_raised_eyebrow: and i´ve got an 250mbit connection. and it makes no difference whether I work with rolling cache or without
