TERRIBLE LOD is destroying a potentially great sim! (DISCUSSION)

I messed up. The 990 Pro (1TB) was listed as 1.2M in random read but that’s actually IOPS and not MB/s. I think that equates to about 5GB/s. Sorry about the mixup!

Given what they’ve discussed as being the most major improvements for 2024, I think it’s highly likely Asobo was aware of and possibly actively involved with the development of these technologies (as a beta tester more than a developer of specifications I imagine)?

Ended up googling because I knew there was something wrong with the context of that number.

That i believe that number is 1.2 Million Input/Output Operations.

M - Million
MB - Megabyte
MBps - Megabytes per Second.

If it were 1.2MBps, you’d be better off with sticking a traditional spinner in your computer…

lol i spent ALLLLL that time writing a rebuttal  :sob:

I don’t think this is fixed in 2024. If you pay close attention to the trailer, mountains off in the distance still look like a blurry mess (i.e., lackluster LOD capabilities)

Great if you aren’t GPU limited I guess. But I am with only a 3070.

We’ve seen only trailers. It’s probably still a year away from release. Please don’t rain on the parade just yet.

Still no fix after WU I don’t know why I even expected a fix.

Same I was hoping so much this WU would fix the LOD. Yeah don’t expect much since 2024 is in the works…

3070 is not “only”. It’s a great card. Our hardware is not the issue. Asobo’s coding and microsoft’s servers is.

I deleted the Oceanica update, and it seems a little better. Not good, but better.

only 8gb vram though, just get maxed out.

I deleted everything and it did not help.
Reinstalled with only mandatory downloads (no add-on planes, airports, or World updates). Made no difference

Pre SU11 i could use TAA, all settings ULTRA, LOD 400 and it looked good. ground textures were sharp.

Now i have to use TSAA (or whatever it’s called), mixed ULTRA and HIGH settings and LOD 200.

Night flying is out of the question, since it looks absolutely awful from 7000ft and higher.

Yes night flying has changed as well. I remember being kind of put off by the fact you could see other airports at night dozens and dozens of miles away. Seemed unrealistic. But now I wish we had that back.

Are people seeing a significant uplift in TLOD after upgrading CPU from say 5800X3D to 7800X3D or 11900k to 13900k? In other words, do we just need a couple more generations of CPU to cover for this development deficiency?

The LOD has been limited by Asobo.

If you search YT for folks uploading using a 4090 with great CPU’s. It looks exactly the same as mine does now.

It used to be better, but has been lowered to accommodate XBOX, and to fix some stability issues.

This is not official, but quite clearly what has happened.
I wouldn’t go out and spend big bucks on a huge hardware upgrade. Just my opinion.

Nothing against your opinion I know this excuse has been repeated over and over in the forums…

I think this is just a convenient excuse that has been repeated over and over without any real proof. Xbox was able to run fine with amazing graphics, so why did it require an reduction/accommodation that affected PC. Just doesn’t add up to me. I think a lot of PC’ers have a lot of money invested in a mediocre sim, and looking for someone to blame (not you @GAD16DK , just in general).

I value your respectful manner in which you write even though you might not agree. Thanks!

There is nothing convenient about it, and there is a reason it’s been repeated by many both on this site and many others.

I had MSFS from day one, and there is absolutely no doubt, that on the SU5 update, which also opened up for XBOX completely destroyed the beauty, AA, LOD, stability and more.
Other issues that was introduced and that hasn’t gotten better:
Ghosting, stuttering, slow loading speeds, popping in/out of objects, night lighting LOD is disgusting and many more.

It was not a mediocre sim up until that point, and Asobo has made many changes in SU’s since then which fixed a lot of the newly arrived issues. Although in the past 12-18 months the general quality is way down.

Every SU and WU has introduced new major degradations and bugs, and nothing gets fixed at all.

Here is an example of very late loading of ground textures, all less than 1nm from the aircraft - you can actually see it apply tile-by-tile.

This short distance drawing of overlay ground textures is not a local performance issue, or related to the aircraft. It’s not even universal, but rather completely dependent on what part of the world you are flying. Many places are absolutely fine (eg never had it in the US). But it seems a few are not.

I don’t see this as quite the same issue as the morphing ground textures associated with terrain relief - eg what you see on coastal cliffs or in the mountains. That happens everywhere (and also sucks - just force the SIM to draw something and then stick to it!).
