The endless goose chase

There are so many issues with the weather, I hope they’ll get it to work properly sometime before their 10 years run out… But I find it much more endurable the way it is now…

absolutely agree !

Frustration is always going to creep into this forum because of the technical challenges to the user regarding MSFS performance vs PC operational experience.
Same was true of FSX. One community member on a mid spec machine could post videos showcasing smooth performance on fairly high settings while others with bleeding edge spec machines struggled with mid level settings. This leads always to frustration and griping.
Better to spend the time looking for answers in PC guide forums. Turn off background programs, optimize GPU and CPU, parse through and understand the impact that some in game graphic settings can have - rather than focusing on ‘all sliders to the right’ or ‘max settings’ etc…
People don’t like to hear that the problem may be in their current understanding or level of experience rather than with the thing that ‘doesn’t work’.
This doesn’t mean that everything in MSFS works - or that the updates don’t cause problems, there are a lot of issues in the mix.
But flight sims (and other PC programs) are ALWAYS an endless challenge to find the optimal solution for performance.

My only frustration with performance right now is this issue that seems to just happen for no reason.
I’m totally fine with medium high settings at 30 fps as long as it stays at 30 fps.
When I’m at FL370 and it’s not rendering anything, I get frustrated when I drop to 15 fps because it makes zero sense.
What’s more frustrating is the people in that thread spending their time doing tests and running experiments to figure it out when the devs (who get paid to test) don’t even make an announcement or acknowledge it.
Yes, it’s listed as “under investigation” but for a bug like that that makes airliner simming that frustrating I think it deserves a hotfix.

Thermal paste, wrong ram for the CPU or simply badly matched leading to 12+ nanoseconds ram latency etc… there are so many possibilities to screw up a PC, even expensive computers often have parts where the reseller or builder saved money. I bought my last PC from a large german computer reseller and they plugged the ram sticks into A-B because the CPU cooler was too big. I had no idea and my friend noticed it when my chinese PSU broke. A new good PSU, different CPU cooler and the RAM sticks plugged in correctly and suddenly my PC worked as intended. I‘m pretty sure many performance issues could be resolved this way.

Seriously the best thing to do is just turn off the fps counter - best thing I have done, and my enjoyment has skyrocketed- and I find myself flying for a lot longer than I did, while I was chasing a silly number.

it’s true that there are hundreds of variables at every step, again not to absolve MS/Asobo of all faults - but just understanding that there are variables at home too…some simple and familiar (to those with flight sim and PC history) and some a bit to a lot deeper and harder to trace

Yes VR is hard to run but do you know it’s also hard to run the sim on 1440p ultrawide 5120x1440 and 4k?
Oh it doesn’t end there. The mods and complex airports.

and this expression of frustration is also familiar - but only to the fans of extremely complex programs mired in ongoing development - ‘Elite Dangerous’ comes to mind…

Any deeply technical software that you join in the midst of development is going to be a rollercoaster - there’s no way to avoid it. When they try to fix an element there’s going to be collateral effects that then also need to be addressed - if they’re even discovered within the update process. Usually as we’ve seen, much of that comes out after the update has been released. No one has all the answers.
It is a process. Takes time and patience and lots of patches…MSFS isn’t the only software that this is true of. I’m just glad they’re still working at it - what would really suck is if they were done.

just checking to see if those having CTD issues have seen this - regarding Sonic Studio Virtual Mixer -
a recent MS program installed automatically with the January OS update

Jan 2022 update CTD’s (sim-outhouse.com)

Totally agree. Sometimes i completely turn the settings upside down, even if they were good at the start. Basically i get eather the smoothness or the details i want, not both at the same time, the search goes on… maybe until systems arrive that can handle the load. I praise the Multi Chiplet Design… :blue_heart:

Tinkering with flights sims is in our blood. Look at the history. I don’t know anything about the console platform. Best advice, turn off the FPS counter. I set my resolution to 1080p (4k monitor with 3080Ti), turn down the settings, and fly the planes I like that are stable right now. It’s a nice break from tinkering.

Very few FPS-problems and very few stutter issues on a medium system (i5-9600K, GTX 970 graphics card). [/quote]

The stutter fest comes and goes, the week after an update is pretty bad, then it smooths back out. I have a very beefy internet connection, and can get >400mbps download speeds from steam. MSFS is caped around 90 - 100 in all things. I am convinced their lack of server BW is driving the stutters.

I also find that my settings have to be tweaked to get performance back frequently post update. For instance this “hot fox” was about a 10 - 15% performance hit. My target is 40fps and that is not an insigificant hit. Volumetric clouds are to blame here this time. I had to notch them back two settings to get back to my baseline target.

CPU loading also went up with this hotfix. Prior to SU7 Hot fix I was pretty balanced, bouncing between CPU/GPU limited. Now, I am CPU limited by roughly 2-3ms. I base line all my settings before each update as they like to get reset, and I am the same as prior. Not sure where this is coming from.

The last of consitancy from ASBO is what causes me to tinker.

5600x + 3070Ti @ 1440P.

I actually prefer the look of MSFS to DCS in VR. I have not found a way to eliminate the terrible aliasing/shimmering on ground objects in DCS. The problem is there in MSFS as well, but to a lesser degree

no problems here (SteamVR/8kx) 50%more crispness with the same resolution, 70% more performance (up 60-90FPS without Repro, but ok, only low shadows and singleplayer, Multiplayer -30%).

But, with Odyssey/Reverb, i become only 45FPS max. wmr is not so nice.

Whats everyone’s take on VSYNC + FPS limiter when it comes to stutters?

The issue very often is, however, that lots and lots of users post only their dismay without any useful info. The so-called white-knighters here always want to help, but are fed-up with the truckloads of posts about ‘issues’ with the sim that when digged deeper, very often are due to other causes. There’s no intention to downplay, only a pushback against non-informative, negative ranting.

By the way: hardly any ctd (had just one in the complete 25 hr cannonball run). Specs are like @Rev20105189.

If the forums are too frustrating for said ‘white-knighters’ maybe they should not come here and go do something they do enjoy doing.

Not everyone has technical knowledge and people tend to get frustrated when they have problems that stay unsolved, especially when there is no direct technical support present that can help them. People who have worked for technical support will know what i mean, 95% of the people don’t understand the problem and you have to dig a little to get to a solution. This is how it is.

But in the end they are customers so they deserve some patience in my opinion.

I think that’s just it, many of us are not tech heads - me included - but just want to enjoy an immersive flight sim ( that arguably we don’t really understand) Maybe we need to take up a new hobby because flight simming in my experience is often more tech than sim : ) that said, I’ve learnt a hell of a lot about computers through all the testing and troubleshooting!

The alternative of course is to take up the real thing! (Which I intend to do later this year) ; )
