I don’t know that water, and it most likely doesn’t use ray tracing. But there IS ray tracing in DX12, even before DX12 Ultimate. See above links.

Oh joy. My motherboard is fine, as it supports TPM2.0. Problem is my CPU (7700k) is not on the supported list for Windows 11. Guess I’m going to be on Windows 10 for a while then!

A video I watched today explained that you can go all the way back to 6th gen. CPUs, and they still support all the features required by Win11. What they appear to have done is cutoff at an arbitrary CPU generation, presumably for monetary reasons. So it’s not just TPM.

It’s not until you get to a 4400 CPU do you see some hardware features are missing.

I doubt that would matter for 99.9% of whatever

There are many forms of raytracing but I believe MSFS will benefit the most from Raytraced Global Illumination.

When you say 4400… is the i7-4790K included in this group that can’t be upgraded, or will be “missing features”?

To upgrade to Windows 11, for Intel, you need to have an 8th gen CPU or above. A 4th CPU won’t meet the minimum requirements, that includes the 4790k.

That’s what they’re saying now… but they also say that the results from the beta testing (where the hardware requirements are not enforced) will enable them to fine tune this policy so some 7th and perhaps 6th gen chips will make the grade. They haven’t detailed explicitly all of the measures the now-withdrawn compatibility tool was taking.

While it’s tempting to think that this is all a ploy to force people to buy new hardware to upgrade, in point of fact there will be specific reasons why they are putting a floor at 8th gen (and it may turn out to be a so-called ‘soft floor’ where earlier processors are eventually allowed if other hardware makes the grade). They just haven’t been explicit about what those are yet, and I don’t think they will until much nearer launch.

I do think Microsoft is shooting itself in the foot here, especially with how they have handled the communications on this issue. But that’s par for the course: no-one in Microsoft says anything they aren’t supposed to until their boss says it’s OK, and they stick with their dates for disclosing stuff pretty rigidly. Even if it’s all leaked beforehand.

If the 7th gen CPU in my main desktop is not supported for Win11, I will just replace the mobo and CPU. But I’m privileged to be able to do that at will. If MS is not careful then Win11 will go down with Vista as a borked launch, and we all know how that went…

Agreed. I have seen things change before, it can happen again. About the tool, I’m not basing my response on the tool. There’s a list of processors compatible with Windows 11, and they are all 8th gen or above. Will it change for RTM? I don’t know.

My GT1030 doesn’t meet Microsoft’s requirements but I sure as hell am enjoying MSFS.

That the majority of this world don’t have a clue what TMP is will soon see requirements getting smartly dropped, after which it’s just becomes a matter of Mips & Flops.

It should work with a 6500 upwards, but they chose not to support them.

Hopefully the CTD issues with certain .dll files will be addressed with this update as well. I’m certain you know the one I’m talking about. It’s been there since day one as has the huge memory leak.

It hasnt really happened yet.

The term is a bit loosely defined, but basically in one of my posts above I suggested they might (hopefully will) have some global illumination/indirect lighting features once they do implement ray tracing. They do a fantastic job of faking it as is. The undersides of MSFS aircraft for instance do get diffuse light colored by the ground as lit, not just reflections. They’ve done an amazing job with the lighting model in MSFS without ray tracing and being limited to DX11. So there’s good reason to think they will be able to use ray tracing and indirect illumination across the whole sim, but just where it matters and in ways that won’t kill performance with a proper card, Nvidia RTX, AMD Radeon Rays.

A lot of older mainboards and some newer ones have either a separate onboard chip or a pinout header that supports a TPM module.

Hopefully, with any luck, this will be the best patch made yet - a lot of great people have been brought on board, like Matt / WT, and they’ve finally gotten a beta group together. The performance video also does seem to show some very solid and measurable improvements.

Having said all that, the fanboy/girl hype train dopamine levels are a bit high.

As many perfectly nice people having already pointed out, the MSFS team have demonstrated a consistent willingness to move goal posts at the last minute, leave entire swaths of users in the lurch for weeks and months, and completely drop commitments for features and fixes - so, given that the overarching consistency has been, well, a total inconsistency in the quality of the updates, it would be wise for people to not hold their breaths.

The difference-maker here is that a botched launch on xbox will almost certainly punch a hole in the hull too big to patch. The xbox launch is what we call in the industry a “cant fail”.

A bit of patience, a bit of earned skepticism, some encouragement, and some positivity.

Here is to hoping the 27th is every bit as successful as everyone is anticipating, and that MSFS knocks it out of the park.

Yes, I agree. One of my favorite parts of MSFS is flying in the mountains at sunrise/sunset and seeing the colors and shadows and the windshield effects changing as I change altitude and attitude. Well done MS/NVidia/Asobo!

Dx12 was coming with Xbox release. Now it’s not. It’s coming “later”. Here we go again. The happened with FSX and it’s happening again. We won’t get DX12. There will be many reasons from marketing.
