URGENT ISSUE - MSFS 2024 Phantom Update Resets Everything Xbox & Windows PC (not steam) 3/21/2025 (~23:30 UTC)

Thanks again, folks. There’s loads of very useful comments today to help me fully understand how this has presented to those affected to then pass onto the dev team.

Hopefully those of you who were affected are now back running in the simulator even if you are in need of reconfiguring your settings, which I do understand is a frustration.

Please let me know if any of you are not able to launch the title or access any content, and as noted if I’m able to provide any other mitigation steps or advise I’ll pass it on as soon as I’m able to!

Thanks again,
The MSFS Team

That and the fact users’ data was deleted which should never happen even if users’ data is in the default location.

Its 11:15 Florida time now, this still hasn’t been fixed?

nope, because I just started my pc today after a few days no activities and now I am also facing the same issue. Had only 450+ folders in the community folder, so not annoying at all…

Some of the icons and names may vary.

On your desktop double-click This PC:

Inside This PC, scroll to the bottom and you should see all your drives. Click on Local Disk C:

Inside C: look for Users, double-click that to open.

Inside Users, you should see a folder with name corresponding to your Windows or Microsoft Account login (mine is blacked out for privacy)

It’s at this point you may encounter hidden folders. Note how a little grayed out Appdata is compared to other folder colors.

If you don’t see Appdata - you’ll need to enable Hidden Folders - see the sequence of clicks below to do that.

Once revealed, inside AppData, click on Roaming

And then from there, locate your FS24 folder.

This is a Windows 10 PC, but it’s basically the same in Win11.

  1. In File Explorer, go to ‘This PC’
  2. Open the C: drive

  1. Click on the ‘View’ tab and make sure ‘Hidden Items’ is checked.

has this been narrowed down to a microsoft store/gamepass version only? are steam users also effected by this data loss?

It was clear to me that SU1 beta testers would be automatically enrolled in SU2. If you didn’t want that, you had the opportunity to unsub after SU1 officially rolled out.

Pulling back this destructive “update” should have been as easy as pushing it out was for whoever is responsible for this mess. This speaks volumes about the quality and efficiency of the organizational structure in place.

OK. But this destructive update wasn’t the official SU2 Beta release. Right?

There are currently no indications that Steam users are affected by this issue.

And once found one can right click on the folder and pin it to the start menu. This creates a shortcut to the folder on the start menu so one doesn’t have to go through that process again.

Does it matter? It’s part of the beta program. Opting in means you got it, opting out means you didn’t.

Obviously it was a mistake and an inconvenience, but as near as I can tell it didn’t affect people that were not in the beta program.

No photo but I saw it, too.

Just kinda wondering at this point if I’m safe to launch MSFS2024. I’ve not launched it since these issues were reported over the weekend. I was in the SU1 beta and have removed myself from it within the Insider Hub app. I did have automatic updates checked, but have not launched the sim since last week - from what I’m gathering, I’ve safeguarded myself from this wipe to the best of my ability and should just launch it to see what happens?

There are reports above from people who claimed to be affected who were not in the Beta.

Further, some of us opted out BEFORE attempting to load into the sim and were affected, and then after the first reinstall, were affected AGAIN with a complete second forced reinstall, many hours after the first reinstall. Again, all after leaving the beta.

Solution is simple… Asobo, just release SU2 beta

I will also add that this fiasco will not deter me from participating in the SU2 beta when it’s released.

You want to start WW3 or what ? hahah… no but for me, all I want is my hundreds of screenshots I’ve taken since the game came out… I had some really great wallpapers on my desktop randomly popping and I don’t feel like going back to every locations to retake my shots… and with live weather, it’s almost impossible to recreate… I’ve heard some pêople also lost their instant replays ? that is extremely sad, I’m glad I have not used that feature yet.

I was also lucky that I did not load MSFS2024 since last Thursday. Once I read about this issue I chose not to turn on my computer. So I am waiting for a rollback or official way to avoid this issue completely.
