Hello everyone.
I’ve been running the sim for years with v-sync enabled in the Nvidia control panel. Recently a friend told me that is better to use the frame limiter option to reduce latency. I’ve tried and got very similar results in terms of performance. I have my monitor set at 60hz with frame limiter at 59.
Does anyone have any suggestions or can technically explain the difference between the two methods?
Thanks
The frame limiter in FS limits the number of frames the sim is going to render. It has a huge impact on both CPU/GPU loads and utilization. I set mine to 30fps and use 2x FG on top of that. For the smoothest performance, set this to lowest even factor of your monitor’s refresh rate you can accept. Then add FG on top.
The settings in the NVIDIA app (VSYNC and Max Frames) limits the number of frames that will be displayed. I have mine set to on and 60. Meaning, if FS was set to 90 max and the NVIDIA app was set to 60, 30 of the frames generated by FS would be discarded—wasted.
They absolutely work together but the Max FPS in 2024 is the number that will really drive overall performance. Without Vsync in the NVIDIA app enabled, you might also get some tearing (lower quality) depending on the monitor.
When setting all of these it is pretty important to know the Min/Max rates of your monitor. My monitor has a fixed rate of 60 which is why I use 30 max from the sim and double it to 60 using FG.
Hope this makes sense.
If you google “vsync vs max frame rate” and check the AI overview, it might be useful. Very thorough explanation.
Thanks for the clarification but when FG is enable the in sim MAX fps setting is grayed out and cannot be changed
I use in game FPS limiter to limit my FPS to either 30FPS or 20FPS if using airliners. I then use in game FSR FG 2X or external lossless scaling app FG for 3X to target 60FPS.
In FS2020 I used to set my TV to 60Hz and set VSYNC ON and target 50% RR, but with FS2024 I’ve found setting TV to 120Hz and VSYNC to OFF is a bit smoother for me visually. (Note: NVidia App also recommends I optimally have VSYNC OFF).
I have a 4 years old PC, 5950/3090/64GB RAM/DLSS performance/4K output.
@mjchernis you made my day. I capped the fps at 30 in the user config file and then enabled FG on top. Turned Vsync off and now I’m getting much better results. Frames stuck on 60 and half of the latency with a super smooth experience. Thanks
Great! I have found that to be a winning combo! Not sure why it won’t let you set in the interface directly but glad you got it working.
Just make sure you keep up with the latest DLSS drivers. Sim updates sometimes install older versions. Also, try enabling vsync in the NVIDIA app. Looks better on my display but results may vary.
So you set a max frame rate in the nvidia app of 60? and then set max frame rate in sim to 30 and use frame gen x2?
I do similar set to max 60fps in nvidia app, but I don’t use any frame gen or max frame limit in the sim settings, I have vsync on also in the nvidia app. Seems to work well for me, but I may try what you suggested.
Yes, that’s how I have it set up. Setting the max frames in the NVIDIA app will limit the number of frames displayed but does not limit the number of frames the sim will try to create—which is what drives the load.
In your config, depending on scene (airport, plane, etc). the sim could be rendering frames in excess of 60 that get discarded.
When you say you set tv to 120hz, do you mean you set max frames in the nvidia app to 120 or do you leave all your nvidia settings as default?
Ive never tried vsync off, I have a 120hz oled tv as well.
I have my frames maxed to 60, don’t ask me why, its just info Ive read and tried, and seems to work ok, but perhaps Im not getting the best performance from my monitor doing this.
I set windows desktop to have a refresh rate of 120Hz. The TV can handle 120Hz. It just seems smoother with VSYNC OFF(in game). Whereas FS2020 was smoother with 60Hz, 30FPS and VSYNC ON (in game). You can see a bit more tearing with VSYNC OFF, but the 120Hz refresh rate smooths that a bit to not be so noticable. When I need all avaialble reources for say fenix into EGLL or EDDF wiith BATC + AI traffic, I target 20FPS which is achievable as a smooth rate during landing. FG up to 60 and it’s fine. This was true in FS2020 also.
So you have vsync off in nvidia settings as well?
By the way how do you get 60 with FG, presuming you set max frames to 20 in game? I can only seem to set x2 frame gen.
I don’t touch NVCP or NVidia app much, so I don’t change VSYNC from default in NVidia setings. Which I think is OFF.
FSR FG in sim currently only gives 2x FG. Lossless Scaling App (which is an inexpensive external 3rd party app from Steam) gives up tp 4x frame generation. I use it on 3x most of the time though. To me it also works better than FSR in game, but I don’t have any evidence other than how it feels to back that up.
Thanks, will try some of settings at the weekend, just to compare it to what Im currently using, I generally fly GA so don’t think I need to target anything like 20fps, but will try a 30fps and in game frame gen x2.
Want a sort of middle ground for when I try some airliners. Interested to try Vsync off though as always had it on in the nvidia app, I just assumed I would see tearing with it off, but that shouldn’t be the case if I use max frames 30 and frame gen x2 (60fps) on my 120hz display, I thought you only get tearing is if you go over what your monitor is capable of?
4070ti super, 64gb, 7800X3D.
I’m currently using 120Hz setting in nvidia control panel for my monitor, 30 max frame rate setting in the sim and then doubling up to 60 with nvidia frame gen. Vsync off in nvidia and sim.
This gives me a very fluid 60fps type experience in all situations (GA only) and no tearing visible.
Still experimenting a bit with some settings and AMD FSR to see which is best but thats my current go to setup.
Great, maybe you don’t need to set to 120fps in nvidia settings though?
Edit/ scratch that I thought you meant setting 120 max frames in the nvidia app.
The advantage of restricting the number of fps to 30 is that you free up GPU resources.
As a result, you can increase the overall visual quality (for example, I put everything in ultra and the Tlod/Olod at max). The end result: fluidity and quality.
And to avoid big stutters in complicated areas, you can also activate “Dynamic settings” with a “frame rate target” of 20fps for example. This will absorb big jolts.
I hate dynamic FPS. It seems to just throttle LOD’s down. I never know when something isn’t loading right if it’s some streaming issue or dynamic LOD kicking in. I’ve also found dynamic FPS to worsen my performance too, so it remains firmly off on my setup. At least I can see where I’m sitting at and tweak things accordingly.
If you set a “frame rate target” lower than your usual fps rate, the Tlod/Olod remains at its normal level and is only lowered in the event of a hard blow… and momentarily.
But everyone does as they want, we don’t all have the same sensitivity
If you have a more powerful PC and the screen that supports it, you can aim for a higher fixed frame rate like 75fps (38fps x 2 for a screen set to 75Hz) or 100fps (50fps x 2 for a screen set to 100Hz)
