VR in 2024 is an absolute mess (review...kinda)

Hi calm … what VR controller? I really want to be able to assign the movement buttons to my Pimax controllers, but cannot figure out how to do this.

I’m using a 12900k, 4090, 32 gigs DDR5 ram, M.2 SSD, Reverb G2.

Using directX 11 in 2020 I would generally be locked at 90fps. With mid-high settings.

In 2024 using similar setting I’m getting about 40-50fps. Which… in the G2 feels nauseating. I don’t know if other headsets have any kind of smoothing features but 40-50fps in this headset looks and feels very choppy and stuttery. I’m a bit bummed. Especially since the devs made it sound like they really enhanced the VR experience in this new game.

Die Symbolleiste kann man einblenden wenn man die selbst zugewiesene Taste drückt und gleichzeitig die Maus nach oben bewegt. Dann wird die die Symbolleiste eingeblendet.

For virtual reality I use an Oculus Quest 2 headset. I noticed that the right-hand controller works inside the airplane cockpit and you just need to point it at an instrument to interact; however I didn’t go into detail of configurations, because I prefer to use the mouse.
When the mouse stops working and doesn’t grab the instruments anymore (very likely due to a bug), just use the VR controller for a moment and then put it away; after that the mouse seems enabled again.

I know about this workaround. It’s not consistent though, works about 50% of the time for me.

Appreciate your reply.

I have a Quest 2 as well as my newer Pimax. I will check the controller functionality inside the cockpit.

Had a go ballooning last night. In VR i think this would be best standing up, so using the controller would be great.

I will try again mapping the movement kets to the Occulus controller.

Thanks again.

I’m talking about the other way around. I’m only using the VR controllers. Turns out if you enter a menu the flight controls are no longer active to the quest 2 touch controllers.

Yep. Came here to talk about the exact same things. VR is a mess in FS2024. I agree with pretty much every single thing you’ve said.

The main thing for me is that the way the controls worked in FS2020 was perfect, why change it? I could toggle between use my controllers at a distance or by having to actually reach out and grab things. Used to be able to pause but now can’t (left home button brings up steam vr pause menu for me).

UI looks worse in VR than 2020 (though the UI in general is just much uglier but that’s beside the point); graphics quality seem worse on the same settings (tho obv more to render this time round so maybe to be expected); the 6-DoF is really jittery and when I move the whole sim feels like it’s moving with me, rather than just me moving in the sim.

I’m using a Quest 2, decent piece of kit usually but this is feeling a bit unplayable atm and I’m really disappointed. Whilst I have a yoke it’s the panels etc that I’m finding really difficult to use. I was in the sim for 15 mins in vr before giving up. My settings definitely aren’t fully optimised yet but come on, this just isn’t good enough.

How do we get this to their attention? Do they even know how bad it is in VR atm?

Seems like dlss, even if I select TAA. Much blurrier than TAA inv2020.

Asobo needs more people working in VR. If there isn’t any improvement, I won’t buy it.

I gave up. Way to many issues in VR. Not even alpha stage. Got a refund from steam and will go back to 2020.

Same for me. I got the Aviator Edition and I only fly in VR. I really trust the team, but I just don’t want to risk such a high price tag in case they never make it right. In any case, it seems like there is a LOT of work to be done and I think it will take them quite a while, not just a month or two.

The other thing that gives me the jitters is the talk about « VR as a platform » with a dedicated team. The first mention of this was probably two years ago, and we saw no real improvement in 2020. It was mentioned again in a 2024 dev stream. So this time I was really expecting to see the effect of that team on the product. Maybe quad views? At the very least, have the product run minimally well on VR, especially that the 2D version performs so well. Alas, I got unplayable frame rate. Worst than that, sometimes it was viable, but most of the times not, without any reason I could see. I literally spent hours trying a ton of setups, going all the way down in settings. But the frame rate was pretty much random, and always too low to play, even though I often rebooted the sim and also Windows.

I am especially sad because some people report having a great experience in VR. Most of them have really powerful PCs, but I saw mid tier PCs in that category. But some people with 4090s report very poor frame rates too. I hope Asobo sends fps info in the telemetry and that they can identify what causes a good or bad experience.

Don’t give up Asobo, there’s nothing I want more than buying the full sim again. But for now, I’m better in 2020.

I have the same issue. It worked the first time I used it and then the large menu shows up with the check boxes to select what you see in the menu (which refuses to re appear). It even has the Airshow add on in there but no way of selecting it. Very fustrating.

“The aviation experience that our trusted partner Asobo Studio created alongside other first party development teams is the best we have ever made” - Jorg Neumann

If that’s the case then why is VR so riddled with obvious bugs & issues making it actually a wisee experience than MSFS2020?

Just about all people I’ve heard say that VR performance is great have been running very low resolutions on a 4080 or 4090.

Terrible performance here on a top end PC, just terrible

Anyone got a 4090 lying around that they don’t need? Just askin.

It’s ■■■■ on a 4090 too (compared to 2020).

Earlier today I accidentally dropped out of VR mode After accidentally hitting middle mouse wheel button (got rid of it on on other aircraft and replaced with another button but if you change to new aircraft, all the old assignments come back by default. Thanks Asobo)

Anyway, my headset went back to the Steam home (I use steam and virtual desktop) and VR frame rate drops to about 1fps and if you re-enter VR mode in MSFS, everything is F____d and it needs a sim restart.

This is one, of the list of about 20 major things that are really doing my head in about VR on MSFS2024, several of which we have discussed above.
