VR in 2024 is an absolute mess (review...kinda)

My preformance on a 4070 ti is very smooth. More smooth in fact than it was in 2020. I’m enjoying the experience

I’m glad for you, but for the vast majority the VR performance is much worse.

in my case dlss was super smooth but TAA very bad, 25 to 30 fps lower than I actually had in msfs2020 (7800x3d with 4090).

I found dlss to be better also

The rendered stuff is way more complex than 2020, trees are true 3D not flat frames, mesh is more detailed, polygons are a whole lot more. So it’s impossible to get more fps or even the same fps as 2020 delivered. We have to accept that. We hope for the functional fixes and that the major bugs can be ironed out eventually, but I’m not that confident in performance gain with the incoming updates. Only the newer HW (NV5000, new CPUs etc) can bring our fps and smoothness back. My 2 cents.

I run a Bigscreen Beyond with Valve Index controllers and in any plane I have tried they do not work in the cockpit but do work in some menus. In 2020 they worked great in all menus and mostly good in the cockpit with the exception of throttle, mixture and trim wheel which were jumpy. I talked about this to Jorg at this years FSExpo and he assured me this would be fixed but it turns out not to be the case.

Until I hear that my Valve Index controllers are working as least as well as 2020 in 2024 I will be waiting on the sidelines. In the meanwhile I will be flying and streaming in X-Plane which has had proper VR controller support for 6 years now and just not sure why this is so hard for MSFS.

Yes if you have £2000 lying around

I only use VR. I have no complaints about performance, it’s similar to 2020. But the handling of the controls is horrible. The mouse often stops interacting in VR, in 2D it still works fine.

So strange that about (subjective impression) 20-25% of people are finding performance to be equal or better than 2020, and the rest (including myself) are finding it much worse.

The only problems I am having with VR is no toolbar and I can’t interact with the EFB other than that its amazing. Graphics and performance better than 2020 I do have a 1000gb internet connection which am sure must be helping.

I’m using SteamVR with a Quest 3.
Anyone managed to use the Menu button (left controller) in 2024 ?

By default clicking the Menu button pops up SteamVR Dashboard, so 2024 cannot read it.

When I change how I pop SteamVR Dashboard (for instance making it a long press or a double press of the Menu button), 2024 still cannot read it : the default binding doesn’t popup the menu when I’m flying, and when I try to assign it in the controls, pressing the Menu button isn’t recognized by 2024…

It’s really the only button I miss to use FS2024 fully in VR from start to finish without using any keyboard, mouse or joystick…

GPU RX7900XT
CPU Ryzen7 7800x3d

So VR looks brilliant and after some trial and error managed to get essential keys bound to pass my PPL, however, the fact that looking around in VR does not equate to look left or right as required to do in training means I cant progress in th CPL career path, any keys or controls I bind to look left or right are ignored in VR mode and why do I need to bind anything to look anywhere, my headset allows me perfect sight anywhere I choose to look! That and the fact that trying to walk around anything in VR mode is a joke has left me really frustrated with the sim. Will come back to it after Christmas and see if anythings fixed but aint holding my breath.

Yep, tried it today. Grabbing the helicopter stick kind of works, but same as in 2020, it is grabbing with a laser pointer, not with my hand. Awful.
Helicopter collective can be grabbed, but again, same as in 2020, they’ve messed up axes. After grabbing, you need to move your VR controller left-to-right to move the collective lever up or down.
The worst part - pausing the game to go to a menu means crashing the aircraft, because grabbing the flight controls stops working after that.
Also could not set up my driving pedals as rudder pedals. Needed to invert one of the axes assigned to the rudder for it to work properly, but the inversion works either for both assigned axes or none. Ended up flying with one pedal with half-pressed being the neutral rudder.

Even though the trailers show much more ground detail, in practice I see the same awful detail either in places with photogrammetry or without it.

I am glad that I did not pay for it, but got the Game Pass Ultimate as a company benefit. The sim actively persuades me not to play it at every step.

I see what your talking about now. As I play more I’ve notice poor video performance. Video is choppy quite often.

Just an FYI, you can get rid of the laser pointer by clicking in the right thumb stick. I also had issues with this because they changed the mapping from what it was in 2020, but I eventually figured it out.

I usually don’t even bother with collectives with the VR controls. I will use a hotas throttle for the collective, but use the motion controllers for controlling the flight stick

Has anyone noticed that if you manage to get the toolbar up, when you select and open the Comms window, it IS repositionable (however this reverts to a default position a lot) but it is NOT resizeable.

I find this really annoying, especially when the things you need to read, like circuit radio calls and nearby airports, are squished into a tiny space and you have to fiddle with an already finnicky mouse to find the needed item whilst trying to fly the plane accurately in the circuit.

Please Asobo make the windows sizeable, as they were in 2020.

I have many of the reported issues, especially mouse often stops working in the cockpit, and the so-called reset pilot view often ends up out on the nose of the aircraft.

Also, in Cessna 172 and 208 the throttle is psychotic. Often suddenly reduces on its on, or after landing you can’t reduce it and you end up careening around the airport. Haven’t flown other planes yet in 2024.

Yes same here, 2020 is smooth as butter (same settings as 24) but 2024 does have stuttering especially more prevalent if looking to side while flying around a city. I have settings matched vs 20/24 but 24 seems to have stutter issue, maybe it is still trying to load streaming data? I have a 9800X3D/4090 and using Quest Pro

Considering I only use VR in MSFS2020 (95% of the time anyway), it looks like I have a long wait ahead before I get MSFS2024 for 50% off.

I must say that on my RTX4090, VR is little bit better on 2024 than on 2020. I use Pico 4 Ultra (with VD software) and it is smooth and the instruments are quite readable, also using DLSS-Quality settings. I mostly use Fenix 320/321/319 on 2024. The only strange problem I have, it is “toolbar” that I can’t show any more in 2D ofter switching off 3D headset.
