VR is Insane!

Here’s my Virtual Desktop settings for the Quest 3, if that helps:

PC client:

App settings in headset:

And my graphics settings (keep in mind I have a 4090 so they’re ridiculously cranked.)

I actually fly a mix of VR and 2D, with a Tobii 5 eye-tracker for the 2D flying.

I really wish I had that feeling! I like flying in VR, every now and then, but it is so much more tiring, a hassle and I don’t ever seem to get as “immersed” as many others. For me it it feel mostly like a 3D screen with tracking more than me being in there.

Really??? Are you sure you’re doing it right? A huge “3D” screen is what you see in your headset before you switch to MSFS VR mode.

“world scale”

Virrtual desktop initially puts you into a big screen. I wonder if he is not pressing alt & tab to enter VR.

Ctrl & Tab might work better.

Yes, I am doing it right. My brain just doesn’t let me become that immersed.

My GF struggles with it when trying it out because she gets too immersed and queasy. I can see everything in 3D no problem, but it is just a 3D screen with tracking and not “real” if you get me?

I have seen so many posts about people with the same as me and plenty with the opposite reaction to VR. I think some just aren’t wired to accept it as fully immersive, while others can get completely into it.

I am ctrl-tabing 100%, I just don’t feel as immersed.

So cool, huh? The flying is incredible, being able to look over the side in open cockpit aircraft for instance. Also being able to walk around outside. I love climbing out of, say, the Just Flight Warrior, and seeing the detail of the door rail down to the insulation strip, standing on the wing, and looking around. Makes me feel like I’m flying the planes I do fly (I painted up the Warrior to match one of the planes I rent). I’m so psyched for 2024. I hope they put some effort into supporting VR for it.

I have a Reverb G2, and, yes, fly pretty exclusively GA and warbirds (which are technically GA). I totally get that airliners wouldn’t be as fun unless you’re into mouse clicking controls in the cockpit.

With the Reverb, detail in view is not an issue for me. I use a 55" 4K TV 18" from my face for 2D flying, and, as far as I’m concerned, detail is comparable for me. I’m not sure why people use VR Zoom, I don’t need it. But I’m sure people care about it for a reason.

VR Sickness, I’ve never had an issue with it, and I’ve flown many hours in VR.

I’m in my last third of life, I wear glasses for distance, and can see very small text on food boxes just fine without glasses, so that may have something to do with it (along with the resolution of the Reverb G2). I see distance with the VR headset just fine, too, without my glasses on inside. My eyesight without glasses is on the order of 20/40 for distance (20/15 and better corrected), 20/20 up close.

I get completely immersed. Then again, I see in 3D in my mind anyway, which I’ve come to realize, as a CAD support person, not everyone can do that. I have no idea if that has anything to do with it, but #justsayin. Like I said, with the G2 on, I might as well be in my airplane for real.

I totally agree with all of what you’ve said. For me VR is insane now since I’ve got everything working perfectly. I’ve not got the beefiest PC in the world or the best graphics card but with my Quest 2 I can honestly say it’s extremely immersive for me. I only fly GA and Helicopters. With my eyesight I’m the opposite to you though. Distance is okay (although I’ve recently had to have driving glasses) but I do need glasses for reading and even then I struggle to read the smallest text on cereal boxes. However with my Quest 2 (not the best Headset out there) I can see everything clear as day without my glasses. I can see in the distance clearly spotting an Airport from far away as well as being able to read all of the Instruments very clearly. Luckily I don’t get motion sickness and never use the Zoom function in VR. Can’t be bothered with 2D anymore as I have to wear my glasses to see the Monitor. It is tiresome though when first starting MSFS2020 having to put on my glasses to set up my flight then take them off, put my Headset on and set that up then take Headset off again to run ODT etc etc but once I’m all set up its just pure bliss! My wife however does get motion sickness within 2mins of having Headset on as well as her sister. Can’t wait for MSFS2024 in Nov. Reckon I’ll have to invest in a better Headset though.

Totally agree, getting into a session is a pain and takes way longer than it should with too many steps. Doesn’t stop me though

I got a Crystal Light (sold my G2 on eBay). Some Youtubers say the Crystal LIght gives a better image than the more expensive regular Crystal. But there’s a new version of the regular Crystal coming soon too, probably best of all.

It’s way better than the G2. Is comfortable (has both a center top strap like the Quests do, but also has a halo strap with ratchet tightner-you wear both at the same time).

1 The local dimming gives the best colors everybody says, not just better blacks. Mine has local dimming. Colors much better than the G2. I haven’t seen the non local dimming model.

2 You don’t need to pay $100 for the controllers if all you do is play MSFS. I never used the controllers that came with G2. You don’t need them at all in MSFS.

3 There’s a $100 sound upgrade. I passed because I don’t use the built in sound on the CL and I didn’t on the G2 either, despite it sounding pretty good. I use iPhone style ear pods. I paid $70 after watching some Youtube videos for phone pods. Tiny like those foam balls people use to block out noises when they sleep. So comfortable, I forget I have them on. Reason: an in ear speaker beats an off ear speaker for sound quality by a mile.

4 The headset fires up and plays every time. Never has balked or refused to turn on. No fiddling.

5 It has pass through, but nowhere as good a pass through as people say the Quest 3 has (I’ve never used those headsets). It’s black and white and very low resolution on the Crystal Light. Not the VR screen, that’s magnificent, it’s the pass through screen which is not very good.

I sound like a shill, LOL. But I rate the Crystal LIght as an 11 out of a perfect 10. Just wonderful !

Hi,

I have been using the original Pimax Crystal with my rtx 3090 since it was released as my daily driver. No complaints. The battery issue was solved by plugging the charger cable directly into the side of the hmd.
Waiting for the rtx 5090 and the Pimax Crystal Super with the higher resolution.

I had the original Quest for a few weeks and even with that old thing got hooked on VR flying. Small aircraft and helicopter flying is so much easier and more natural with it because you can look around.
Flying in the mountains, for example the Alps, is awesome. Got a bit of vertigo when I flew over a mountain ridge and looked down into the valley

Now I asked my family to get me a Quest 3 for my birthdy.

I have had the same problem… I now sit on the floor and fly… can’t fall off that.

I am so jealous! Never got any kind of vertigo feeling in VR. I wish I could try another headset than the Quest 3 to see if it would help me feel more immersed. I have mostly had the practicality of seeing things in 3D and being able to move around, and not really the feeling.

Underachiever…

I really doubt that a different headset would give you more “immersion” than the Quest 3. Maybe slightly better focus? Slightly better FOV, maybe? Better color contrast? If you don’t like VR with the Quest 3 I can’t imagine you liking it with a different headset. The overall experience will be pretty much the same, just maybe a little more refined.

Among the popular choices for PC VR, the Quest 3 is one of the top two, the other one being Pimax Crystal Light. They are not the only choices for good PCVR, but the two most reasonable to buy right now. There are better ones, but they cost a whole lot more.
The sensation of slight vertigo requires a really good match in interpupillary distance (distance between the 2 lenses). And I think the Quest 3 adjustment travel range offers a wider choice than any other popular headset. But IPD is the key !

BTW, this is why most “stereo” cameras fail to achieve a real stereo image: the two lenses are too close together. They should be about 65 mm apart. Any type of artificial digital compensation for IPD has yet to achieve a convincing depth perception.

Some people with two good eyes, still do not see in 3D depth. And most of them do not realize their lack. To test, close one eye. The stereo depth should disappear, it should produce a big change. This test being done with no headset or 3D glasses on, just looking ahead into a far distance out of doors or out the window.
