VR user response to SU8 Mid beta update

As you might have noticed the devs have finally responded to our issues with Su8 beta see below

https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/su8-mid-beta-update/498636

A response is much appreciated and we should now digest exactly what their comments actually mean.

They say they will release a new build in the coming days. At first I thought this was good news for us VR users but then I read further.

So this problem WON’T be resolved in the coming few days?

  • While using VR, mouse over the panel or Garmin avionics locks up rudder: This is currently by design and only affects the Rudder Axis command. If you bind your rudders to another command (e.g. Rudder Axis Left), then you will be able to manipulate the rudders while your mouse is over panels. Our other suggestion is to move the mouse cursor off the in-flight toolbar, menus, and flight displays while you use your rudder. We understand this is not an ideal user experience and thank you for bringing it to our attention.

Rudder Axis Left? Is this an analogue axis or a digital (on/off) axis? If it is a perfect replacement for the currently used rudder axis, why make the 2nd suggestion?

What does the expression “this is by design” mean to you? To me, it means that the rudders failing to operate whilst mouse is hovering over toolbar windows is intentional and deliberate. What the f___?

Update:

I have just tested their suggestion of assigning rudders to “Rudder Axis Left” and it totally works!
With the mouse hovering over ATC window and LNM window, the rudders continued to work in a fully analogue fashion, without interruption.

Well done Devs. Nice simple solution.

Now we just need the toolbar window reset problem resolved and we can go back to moaning about much less pressing issues

Which is a bit weird though - I assume the rudder goes right as well as left?

I also don’t get the “by design” bit - why would they design it like that? There must be something we are missing.

Anyway, as long as it works

yes at first i assigned rudder axis left and rudder axis right, which resulted in no rudder movement. Then just rudder axis left and rudders worked fully from left to right. Strange name for the axis but not complaining.

Thanks for testing that! Weird name indeed. Ah well.. Will rebind tonight.

Not quoting you directly Cliffy just the wording used

This is currently by design and only affects the Rudder Axis command.

So they knew about this since SU7 but only now tell us?! I don’t buy that and why is it “currently” by design? Pointless asking really as their communication is appalling during Beta periods but oh well.

I’m currently re-installing the whole Sim (bit the bullet) and will remain on SU7 thereafter as I had troubles reverting from the Beta, that and their approach to Beta is like nothing I’ve ever encountered in all my years of gaming (and not for the good). I’ll try the Axis command thing later to see as well, hopefully that fixes that but there are still other issues with Mouseover in VR which Ive had to report…again.

I hope they fix the toolbar windows resetting as that is a major annoyance (not game breaking though), the text from the update isn’t exactly reassuring and again they surely must’ve picked up on this internally before the beta was released, if not what exactly is the internal VR tester/s doing?!

To me it means „we designed something with something else in mind and made a mistake, we can‘t currently roll it back as it would break what we designed, but here is a temp fix until we resolve the issue “

Not being able to hide the Yoke in VR was by “design” for SU7, yet here we are with the SU8 beta and you can hide the yoke again like pre SU7. Their design decisions make zero sense unless they actively engage and tell us why, which they fail to do at every given opportunity.

See Ephedrin87’s explanation. Although, I’m sure, he made this in jest, it’s probably not far from the truth.

is rudder axis used to manipulate menus etc on an xbox controller perhaps? Maybe the idea was the rudder axis locks out so the same controls can be used to move around a menu/window options without destabilising the aircraft… the unintended consequence being that it annoys people who don’t use that particular control input device or method.

The only way I can make sense of that comment “by design” is that it was meant to prevent another problem, so the feature itself is intentional but the issue it creates for us is not.

I’m not convinced VR gets much QA at all tbh, with some of the big bugs that get through like the totally broken interaction in SU7. I guess it’s to be expected given how small the VR userbase will still be at this point, probably a relatively low priority for QA testers. Either that or it does get picked up and just not a priority to fix before releasing it.

Overall I have to say SU8 is working very nicely for me in VR so far though, relatively speaking. Thankfully the way I fly I’m not subject to the windows bug and I can live with the rudder work arounds for now.

We are the VR QA testers! Even the VR runtimes, all the hardware, etc. It’s not just MSFS.

Disappointed to see that the VR performance issues aren’t being tackled in SU8. The team haven’t shared any relevant updates or even acknowledged what’s in the world to address this.

Must say, apart from not being able to switch to outside view, due to several windows opened and carefully positioned, my VR flight this evening in the Dominican Republic using the xcub crafter was a very enjoyable one. Lots of CB’s and rain during my approach. Was a joy to be able to use the rudder and throttles, in fact everything, without having to worry about where the mouse was.

Everything about the flight was smooth and realistic. Just the toolbar windows reset issue to resolve and I will be a happy little flying bunny.

Is the bug fixed the causes the seizure educing flashes and camera jumping when you toggle off avionics?

Is that new? In SU7, they fall out of the airplane but are still there when going back in. It’s kind of like the scene in the Expanse when they try to go through the ring too fast and the laws of physics change.

In case you weren’t aware, the current SU8 beta build has introduced a new bug whilst probably trying to fix the old bug where, when you switched to outside view, all your opened toolbar windows would stay still, whilst the plane would fly on without them.

Now, this doesn’t happen but when you return to cockpit view, all toolbar windows reset to default size and position, right in front of your face.

Does the new patch version of the beta fix this? Not had a chance to try yet, but the release notes say:

  • Fixed position / location of in-flight menus reset themselves when returning to Cockpit view from External view in VR

https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/sim-update-8-beta-version-1-23-11-0/498828?u=gordongreig

That’s now fixed in yesterday update (according to others).

Also the VR jump to 2D and back to VR is an annoyance since SU7, hope that gets sorted soon unsure if that’s fixed in the latest beta update.

I can confirm, having only taxied around the apron at Shoreham airport, that the toolbar window reset issue is no longer a problem :ok_hand:

Also after a mini heart attack, I can confirm that rudder now works, regardless of mouse position being over a toolbar window. :ok_hand: as long as you go back to the standard rudder axis.
Rudder axis left does not work as a workaround anymore.

I, personally am completely satisfied with the fixes the devs have put in place and can now get on and properly test the beta (hopefully no more game breakers)

Please accept my profound gratitude for having taken care of these big issues for VR users. I am sure there are many many things left for you devs to accomplish over the coming months and years but these relatively minor gripes where really making VR a real pain to use and it is awesome to have them out of the way.

Thank you very very much.
