Wanting to go VR in MSFS 2020

Brilliant thank you :+1:

No problem. Don’t be too fazed by all the tools and things floating around this forum. There are a zillion ways to tweak your set up and everyone is searching for that extra 1% of performance or clarity or smoothness or whatever. But this game in particular in VR pushes the boundaries of what’s possible with current hardware.

You don’t have to do that. You can still have a perfectly good (in fact wonderful!) experience by keeping things simple and enjoying the feeling of flying in VR.

(I’m a tweaker by the way :winking_face_with_tongue: but I’ve also been in the IT industry for more years than I care to mention and not everyone enjoys fiddling with their PC ad infinitum)

I have to remind myself I was blown away by my first VR flight in the original Oculus Rift. So much so, that I felt fear as if I were in the real airplane. With that headset you could see individual pixels.

I’m really looking forward to flying in VR for the first time. I’ve never experienced VR at all so will be interesting to see what it’s like compared to viewing on a monitor with Tobii head tracker.

Hello All,
I must have been good lad this year as santa left me a Meta Quest 3 under the xmas tree & I’ve been busy trying to get it to work in MSFS2020 but no joy as such so far :frowning:

I’ve got the Quest 3 set up on my PC via the Meta quest Link which all connects fine from Headset to PC however, 2 issues I seem to be having.

  1. I can’t seem to make the sim full screen as its just like I’m viewing it in some sort of cinema mode so its no different from looking at my monitor really. I seem to be still in that virtual environment area and just seeing a virtual desktop image.

  2. Also when I go into the MSFS options & select to switch to VR it says no VR headset detected.

  3. Am I having the above issues as I have not purchased virtual desktop? If so do I install that on the PC or install it on the headset ?

Any help much appreciated
Thanks

Ok bit of an update. I managed to get the VR view while seated in the cockpit as it should be rather than like the image above in my last post. Not sure how I did it but I just remember the view in my headset was like a tiled floor and ceiling with a big large curved screen in my headset view.

Once I clicked Fly it loaded fully into my view of the quest 3 headset. I think this is all via the quest link app that’s installed on my PC.

The only issue I now have is the image I’m seeing in VR seems blurry and gauges in the cockpit are hard to read. Also objects in the distance are blurry.
Settings are set high and ultra but seems to make little difference what I choose.

As asked in my last post do I need to purchase and install virtual desktop in order to get a better image quality?

To solve blurryness, don’t run High and Ultra settings, especially with your GPU. Instead, lower settings (start with most on low and medium) and increase the render resolution as high as it will go before framerstes become unacceptable. You can do this via the Quest Link Software or Oculus debug tool, but best way is getting to know OpenXR Toolkit, which allows very granular control.

Later you can also try DLSS Balanced and supersampling to a much higher resolution but for now try to get a higher resolution with TAA and an acceptable fps.

But yeah it’s a complex topic, plenty of Q3 guides for MSFS on youtube.

Hi thanks for reply. Not sure I’ve seen any options to adjust in the quest link app only those in the sim.
Where do I find the oculus debug tool and openxr toolkit? Again can’t say I’ve seen them in the link app that’s on my PC desktop.

If you go to the connected device in Quest Link there is a setting where you can set the resolution scale above 1.0.

Oculus Debug Tool is already on your PC, you just need to find it. Can’t remember where the EXE is, somewhere in the Meta folder think. You can check Google.

But OXRTK is best anyway (it says no longer supported but still works great)
You can also use the CAS sharpening in it to reduce blurryness, and many other useful functions.
Sorry I have some bug where I can’t paste the URL, just Google Mbuccia OpenXR Toolkit

The Quest 3 will be slightly blurry compared to a monitor but that’s the trade off for immersion. There are 4k headsets out there but they cost a fortune and the current PC hardware cannot really run them as intended at the moment. The other thing is that your IPD adjustment may not be correct (slider under the left eye).
I run the Quest 3 wirelessly using virtual desktop which is a pretty impressive piece of software and it does look good in Godlike mode. The only recommendation for running VD is that the PC is hardwired to the router but it looks like you have that covered. I couldn’t see any advantage from running with a link cable as it’s not display port.
I also have a new, more comfortable head strap with a spare battery and have run for 8 hours no problem. A new head strap is seen by many as a must as the standard is so uncomfortable. There’s also much softer face pads available to replace the standard as well.

I’ve downloaded & installed Virtual desktop which does make the headset connecting to the PC a breeze but just not sure I can live with the blurry graphics compared to my 4K monitor.

I’ve tried various setting in the sim but they don’t seem to make any difference really.
Not sure if the below is an issue with regards to 780Mbps as some youtube vids I’ve seen has this figure in the 2000’s

A snapshot while in the sim in the cows DA42 over Edinburgh. I’m not sure what all these figures mean if good or bad to be honest so any help appreciated.

I have tried adjusting the lens via the scroll button under left eye but this makes no difference whatsoever.

Yellow means you’re stretching your resources a bit thin.
In the DA42 i would use 72fps (half these figures for true fps. In this case, 36)
Max bitrate doesnt need to be above 120
Snapdragon on
■■■ on always
TAA or DLAA will give the cleanest image but you will not get that 4K monitor sharpness with a 2K headset.
Not sure why its blurry for you, these lenses are really good. What’s your msfs settings?

Here’s my settings

Swap DLSS quality to TAA.

Turn raymarched off.
Ambient occlusion to med
TLOD to 120
Object LOD to 100

Here are the settings I use, I connect via the link cable, I do not use Virtual Desktop. With these settings I get very good clarity, I can read glass cockpits and analog very well. Again you have to understand that you will not get a 4K experience in VR, but you can get a very satisfying result. I will never go back to 2D. OpenXR Toolkit, I found is not required for the Quest 3, I did use it for the Quest 2.

.

Thanks for the help guys pretty much tried all settings I can think of & as suggested but its no different. Think I tried most suggested on youtube too.

Flying the cows DA42 I cant even read the white text on the buttons of the G1000 units they are just blurred along with any text on the G1000 screens.
Also any text in the cockpit on switches etc are unreadable.

I’ve tried both Link cable connection in meta app & air link using VD but its no different.

Think I’m going to give up on it & stick to my monitor. Shame as the immersion factor is absolutely breath taking but when the vision is like you’ve just had few beers it just spoils it :slightly_frowning_face:

DLSS on 2020 with the old DLL version was tough. Look up DLSS Swapper and grab version 3.8.10.0.

Many of us are finding DLSS 3.8.10.0 using Performance or Balanced in 2024 are producing results close to TAA for smaller aircraft. It’s kind of forced in 2024 since DX12 has bad performance for TAA.

Did you try TAA? Even if the frames are bad, it should give you an idea of what you can expect for maximum clarity.

I also use a hat switch to translate my camera position to help get up close when needed.

Many time, even when upgrading to an RTX 4090 or Crystal Pimax, I’ve been disappointed at first. But then managed to get things dialed in.

You might need to manage your expectations a bit here if a 4k screen is what you are comparing it to. Even with the best headsets currently available you can’t quite get it looking like that, plus everything looks a bit worse by default since it’s blown up so large. Combine that with the not-so-high resolution and compression of the Q3 and you get an image that’s good enough to have fun with, but it won’t compare to the much smaller and sharper 4k image.

I’d still take VR over 2D any day though, it’s just so much more immersive. I haven’t flown 2D in literally 4 years. But yeh Q3 is an amazing HMD for the price but not ideal for MSFS IMHO.

There’s something not right there. It’s not 4k pin sharp but I can 100% read the G1000 in the DA42. Have you tried another VR title to see if it’s the same?
