Waste of time

Zero CTDs but then again I have no addons and have not massively overclocked my pc

Ofc it isn’t finished. No simulator is EVER finished. Is it flyable? Absolutely!! They can demand anything they want, but YOU are NOT forced to buy it. So, if you buy it and are not happy, then simply go and refund it. Where’s the hassle? You’re not entitled to anything whatsoever. They sell a product and you can choose whether you wanna buy it or not. There were enough occasions to test the sim for free, basically.. (gamepass) And there are thousands of youtube videos that show the state of the sim at any given moment.

I’m sure you’re not intending to sound snarky, but you’re brief replies tend to come accross snarky - I would hate for you to be misunderstood when you’re trying to simply make sure information is correct.

Having said that, pops is referring the the “open” beta period, rather than the closed alpha and beta periods.

I was forced to update when everything for me was working fine. Do you buy a car and forced to go back to the dealer for the experimental tire every month which gets worse every month. If we had the option to revert back before the update I would and would be flying now instead of on the forum because I CANT FLY due to CTDs EVERY Flight. All other software lets you go back to a workable version.

Lol  Is that the newest rant? “I was forced to update” Come on now, this is comedy..

I’m sorry you’re having all these problems with the game. I’ve been having enough CTDs that I’ve just decided to not play the game again until another patch is released and the zendesk team actually replies with some sort of meaningful feedback.

It’s very difficult to say with any degree of certainty whether addons are causing the problem - but it sounds like you’ve tried to eliminate those as a factor already.

I think it’s also important to emphasize that there is an insidious nature to CTDs. You can have virtually the same hardware setup as someone next to you, yet that other person will not have any problems.

This leads to a lot of “works on my machine” and “well, you must be doing something wrong, because my system is perfect” and other frustrating and unhelpful dismissals.

In reality, a lot of these CTDs are being caused by various memory management problems in the core game code - these oversights are easy to introduce, and also very easy to miss. They will linger around in the code until someone either notices it, or reproduces an error leading to it. Sometimes problems with things like uninitialized variables, dangling pointers, deallocations, and so on, can sit for YEARS undiscovered and not causing problems, until pop! one day, it starts causing CTDs.

Basically, the nature of how computer memory behaves and expects to be used, means that two players with the same hardware, on the exact same version of the game might never experience a crash at the same time. It’s a game of whack-a-mole for engineering teams.

Having said ALLLLLL of that, I wanted to say your frustration is still warranted. QA/QE, unit tests, regression tests, integration tests, system tests, and a whole suite of other things should be happening before a release to prevent most of this - and it’s not.

luckily there are for example flybywire and salty 747. Thanks to them it is flyable. don’t get me wrong i think this sim is a masterpiece. but too many people have problems. and in this state you shouldn’t publish a program game or anything else.

And people are more likely to complain publicly than they are to praise publicly. Just because you don’t see thousands saying they don’t have issues doesn’t mean they don’t exist.
Not everyone who has an issue and posts here also puts on a ticket like you have.

Thank you. The last three replies are spot on. Thank you for the intelligent feedback and response to someone who LOVES the sim and can deal with ANY of its problems but one, CTD.

That’s not true, software that relies on online server and player synchronisation often requires versions to be up to date.

Many PlayStation games are like this (force you to update before playing)

World of Tanks/warships/warplanes is like this.

I’m afraid we can’t have our cake and eat it. You want features that rely on massive datasets and live streaming data? You gotta update! Want stability? Gotta stick with X-Plane or FSX etc.

Excellent post.

I had a couple of CTDs with the latest Nvidia drivers, but after going back to 457.30 the game has been stable for me.

I take it you were not part of of the testing - I can assure you it lasted longer than 28 days.

Mmmm, I’m not so sure. @ViscousTundra09 sounds like you’ve given up? I don’t get crashes so it’s difficult for me to contribute but you have to

USE THE TOOLS AVAILABLE!

We need an upvoted issue about a lack of a crash handler then maybe Asobo would have been forced to build something to help those of us getting a CTD. The best I’ve seen is somebody complaining about lack of a message with a CTD yeah that’s really going to get Asobo off their seats.

Cloud Imperium Games are fixing server and client issues all the time because they have information from the crash handler, they also stated that many issues come from the live builds that are simply impossible to test in a closed network with a limited number of hardward configurations, for MSFS add mods on top of that and it’s a nightmare.

Seems to me a crash handler is critical and needs to be added to the sim as soon as possible. @Jummivana is this something you can fast track as an issue / bug to be voted up?

Thank you very much for an extremely helpful comment and from the insightful issues you raised tells me that you understand what it means to code. It is refreshing to hear from someone who knows his onions rather than some of the (thankfully few) posts of potato headed stupidity on this thread. Like you I have walked away from this game for a period of time as I just don’t have the time and increasingly the energy for this. I used to fly and for me this is a tool for keeping my skills vaguely in shape. I have huge sympathy for Asobo and the job they have to do however all fancy AI VR and Console magic is worthless if the game is not stable enough to play. Helpful feedback enables me to make a decision as to my steps going forward. I can’t afford to spend weeks and months trying to work out what exactly is going on. Enough people seem to have an issue with this that makes me think there might be a patch that might fix this.

I must be in the lucky set of users. Since August (I preordered the box version from Aerosoft), I only had a few CDT after the USA update, when trying to complete the USA Tour. After the sucessive update I never had a CDT. In these days I am flying the various sections of the Japan Tour with the slow Savage Cub, and never had a CDT, at present it is a quite smooth and clean experience.

I have had numerous crashes over the months since release, and for most there has been a workaround.

  1. Ensure only one version of the C++ Runtimes are installed, both x86, and x64. If you install other software, check that new versions have not been installed.
  2. Limit what you run in the background that uses SimConnect. I haven’t flown with either Volanta, LNM, or Charts+ for weeks, and I think I’ve had a single crash in that time, even near busy airports with live traffic enabled at 50, and traffic variety at Ultra.

I thought it was a very well reasoned explanation of CTD issues.

I have also seen an increase in CTDs recently. both when using Addons and without them.

There is nothing more frustrating than doing full flight only to have it CTD on approach.

It’s less than half a game when it does this.

Maybe the Tuesday update will fix a few things but it will probably bring other issues. On balance I am not looking forward to it.

Here are the dates:

That is a good point. Part of my frustration is that there is no error code it is just wham and you are out. Thankfully there is no blue screen of death but if you have codes you can work out the issue. I rarely bother writing what I did but I am at the end of my rope a bit and i really would like it to work but I have a life outside of msfs and I don’t want to spend weeks trying to fix this. I would have rather say ok well done you screwed me out of a couple of hundred pounds and just go an find something better. If these things are an issue that Asobo is going to address within a reasonable time frame then that is a different matter.
