140 knot direct headwind at FL400. I think I’ll divert. To… cozy Winchester VA. Never been.
This sim is a like a pandoras box of hobbies. There is the flight sim hobby, the PC tweaking hobby, the setting things up to make things more immersive in the sim hobby etc. The last few weeks I’ve gone down some never ending rathole setting up Air Manager panels, Stream Deck profiles, learning AAO, and finally the last few days organizing all my add-ons with Addon Linker.
But today, I just flew around. I actually used the sim for flight simming. I decided to check out a few of the Seattle payware airports I own as well as the Kodiak. I ended up flying from KRNT - KTIW - KSEA - KBLI - 1WA6 - KPAE - KFHR (missed approach due to SU13 jacking up some terrain here) and diverted to CYYJ.
Flew the LatinA321 from Savannah to KJFK airport
I flew my favorite JPL Cessna 152 (N280TF…thanks for the awesome retro paint, Waffler!) from San Diego-Montogomery (KMYF) to Chiriaco Summit (L77), departing about 1330 Local with real weather. I followed the recommended VFR flyway to the northeast, climbing to 7,500 feet as airspace permitted, then dropped back down into the Colorado Desert near Borrego Springs before crossing the Salton Sea. Great desert scenery! I kind of plunked her on at L77, but got to chat with the group holding a landing competition. I highly recommend the General Patton Memorial Museum!
Climbing out of KMYF…San Diego behind.
Cresting the Peninsular Ranges near the Julian VOR.
ATR 42 600 from JFK to KROC
More flight testing in the H145 and H160. Flew the H145 out of the Tokyo heliport and spotted this strange structure that from a distance looked like a gargantuan yacht - as, no doubt, it was intended to.
It’s actually the ventilation shaft for a road tunnel. Can’t say they look much like vents but I’d wager a tenner - okay, I’m a Scotsman, a fiver - that that’s what they are.
Later I flew the Mitsubishi MU2 - sorry, I mean the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries MU2 from Perth Airport to the same at Inverness. By Loch Tummel and Loch Rannoch and Lochaber I did go then up the Great Glen.
The MU2 is, well, sticky to get off the ground and quite difficult to get trimmed. Once she is trimmed, however, she is both speedy and sedate.
Here’s me going up the Great Glen:
And in Loch Ness expecting to be bitten by the monster. The radar altimeter is the instrument to the right of the yoke shaft :
Despite the monster I did in fact make it to Inverness Airport:
I wasn’t too far away from you today, dagwit! I flew west between Scotflight’s beautiful Strathaven (EGTY) and Islay (EGPI) airfields in my favorite Tiger Moth, G-AOJK (available at the sim-outhouse…thanks, SpaceWeevil). I used to fly mostly propliners and jets in FSX and before, but in MSFS I really enjoy touring new places from down low. The scenery is too nice to skip over, and what a beautiful country Scotland is!
Flying west near Kilmarnock, the seat of East Ayrshire.
Crossing over the Isle of Gigha off the west coast of Kintyre. Mill Loch is directly beneath AOJK’s main wheels, with Upper Loch ahead. Creag Bhan, the highest point on Gigha (320 ft / 100 m), is at the upper right wingtip. Somehow, I don’t think the dense foliage is accurate, but it sure is pretty this time of year!
Approaching the east coast of Islay in the Inner Hebrides, and racing the sun to the horizon. Eilean a’Chuirn, Eilean Craobhach, Eilean Bhride, Ardilstry Bay, and Eilean Imersay are visible.
Crabbing into a strong right quartering headwind to 2,000 foot / 625 meter long Runway 8 at Islay airfield. It was a nice challenge after a peaceful flight across southern Scotland!
Luton to Toussus in the Vision Jet. Crazy, crazy winds, including a rough 30+ knots quartering on final. Beautiful cloud layers though from 7,000 down, I was plunging in and out of banks.
Just got the ‘third anniversary’ handshake from FS forums. That’s when I learned I could burden you all with my antics, discoveries, and developments in this three decade-old hobby of mine. Been a plus that some very dedicated and helpful people have been here to comment and share. Cheers!
first moment in the sim, just looked - so much had to be done before I’d give this a go.
Had to check out my high school - was thrilled to see how it looked - best rep ever in a sim. Go, Barristers!
Remembering Asobo’s little Halloween flight - thanks for being so playful.
The Baron and I were buddies that year, many California flights
LA no longer crashed or taxed the system as in FSX/P3D, even in miserable weather
Same with London
I never get tired of bringing Osaka, Nagoya, and Tokyo to life
Freeware creators made things even more captivating.
So, many intriguing and immersive sim moments to you all!
A most excellent flight!
My home airfield is Perth Airport (Scone Aerodrome as was) in the east of Scotland. From my then house on a hill on the other side of the Tay I could, as a boy, watch planes take off from there, presumably mostly student pilots at its famous training school.
Nevertheless I am a regular visitor at EGTY Strathaven (pronounced Straeven, incidentally). I take it you have the excellent freeware scenery by Scotflight?
I’m also a huge fan of the Tiger Moth. Though I have to admit, sometimes I find it just a wee bit too racy for my blood:
quick KBOS to KJFK with ini A310 which is a wonderful plane but the fps performance is terrible tbh (worst in the sim for me); nonetheless the flight was great and scenery is wonderful as always
The Tiger Moth too racy? Goodness! And you found the only airplane slower!
Yes, I’ve only recently discovered the fantastic ScotFlight scenery packages, but what a treat they are! Is that the same ScotFlight of FS9 and FSX fame?
Alas, on the question of ScotFlight I can’t help you. MSFS is my first flight simulator in quite a while - it really is my 40th Anniversary Edition, though in those days my budget didn’t run to a proper PC:
Flew the Fokker F28 4000 from KROC to Erie international airport and the return leg back
I planned a pleasant fly on the FBW A320neo from EETN (Tallin) to EGFF (Cardiff)
Boarding
Take-off & Climb
It all went ok until I had to leave my seat for a moment. When I returned, my screen showed Windows desktop, so I assumed I had suffered a CTD, so I started switching everything off, which included driving throttle to idle and shutting off the engines. After that, I started closing other applications in order to switch off the computer when suddenly MSFS occupied again all the screen: it wasn’t a CTD it just got minimized!!!
I quickly jumped into the cockpit, I was at 32000ft, many of my screens were black and the ones still alive were full of critical errors. I managed to keep the plane stable as I switched on the APU and after that the engines. I could more or less get back to “normal” at 22000ft.
Fortunately, I managed to complete my flight after this incident:
That cockpit view is gorgeous!
