What did you do in MSFS today? (Part 2)

Took my new C414AW out for a spin in icing conditions (not used to flying aircraft that have de-icing!). Really enjoying flying the Chancellor.

Nice video! Gave that right tire quite a workout though!

Flew my FBW Airbus A230neo from KPDX to KSEA. Major improvements after SU15, including faster loading time and FPS on my ancient Alienware Area51 laptop.

Altisurface Grand Terrus (LFTG) in easy mode.

It wasn’t so easy yesterday when I brought the Skyvan here (which is why there’s a picture of my H.145 rather than my Skyvan).

The problem with the Skyvan wasn’t the landing or taking off - they went OK. The problem was that while the Skyvan offers a panoramic view in straight and level flight, the moment you bank you’re in blinkers (maybe the odd glimpse out of the left upper window, but nothing out of the right). I kept losing the airfield and struggling to find it again while I might still be a position to land.

Incidentally, this version of LFTG is freeware scenery (it’s a really nice container!) by SBWorks, found in the usual place.

Edit: So LFTG is on the north slope of a valley running east-west.

A road runs along the bottom of the valley. Follow it east, keeping it on your left side.

You’ll come to a village, and beyond that a low hill, and beyond that you’ll see the airfield on the northern slope of the valley - runway 02 runs up the slope.

At that point it should be a gentle turn in to land - make sure you haven’t let yourself get too high, though you will at that point be flying over the south slope.

Following this procedure, I had no trouble finding the runway and landing the Skyvan, even at max takeoff weight.

Rather more surprisingly, I also managed to take off again at max takeoff weight, with full flaps, throttles to the wall and red lines be blowed, and just managing to squeak (literally, though I think that was the stall warning) over the trees at the bottom of the runway.

Another day, another XC Flight into CYUL

have to say though, the visibility started to drop (not as bad as last June/July with the wildfires) but def made the approach a little harder, trying a base and final between the Airport and Mount Royal

Wow, now that was hard work! I decided to do an IFR flight from SeaTac (KSEA) to Vancouver (CYVR) with real weather, FSLTL and FSimStudios CYVR. And clearly I did not think this through: after 16:00 at KSEA and there would OBVIOUSLY be a lot of activity! So I patiently lined up, very much feeling out of my depth…

The lineup shrank quite quickly: I clearly got preferential treatment ahead of some of the big boys!

And boy oh boy, was that takeoff ever hairy! I had a 23kt crosswind from the right: I had the left rudder pedal to the floor, full aileron into the wind, hard on the left brake and STILL I went off the runway to the right! Was it ever a relief when I got airborne! Never had anything like that in real life, thank goodness.

But finally I was up in the air. And it was quite bad up there as well. This was once I was on top…

And this was the wind up there: 41 kts almost directly from the left. Look at that crab angle!

But it was pretty up there.

Descending into CYVR I finally saw some ground. I used RNAV for runway 26L and the approach required me to descend some time before the in game ATC saw fit to allow me to descend. So I broke some rules, I am sorry to say. And even though I was spot on on the glideslope, a Dash 8 breezed past below me!

Sure is pretty!

On the ground and heading to parking

Shut down and ready for a beverage at the Flying Beaver across the road: I think I earned it!

I crossed Britain on my tour around Atlantic in TBM-930 in real weather: EGPO :airplane: EGHC
Departed from Scotland, flew over Ireland and landed in England.

Luckily, there were no clouds, because Garmin had only visual approaches to Land’s End airport, no RNAV approaches. At first I tried rw34. However, I couldn’t see the airport. I found it too late and I realized, it’s much smaller than previous airports on the tour. Then I got assigned visual approach 25. That is shorter runway, with very little margin for landing distance. But surprisingly I nailed it with approach speed 85kn.

In the past few days, we’ve flown Mission Boston over Normandy twice: once in daylight and again at night. We’re a little tired now! You can read our special writeup about this historic flight and historic day at our Pee-Wee and Nag’s Sky Tours (and Other Thoughts) thread.

Stay tuned: we’re finishing Part 2 now.

Special thanks to jamespejam at flightsim.to for the custom paint, and to Pee-Wee for the custom nose art.

This sure doesn’t look like “Peoria” to me.

We followed the mission plan to the “T.”

Doing it for real.

Gosh 23kts crosswind, can the Beech handle that IRL?

I did a flight last night in Iceland with a 49kt crosswind at altitude. I was crabbing ~15 degrees!

Apparently not: specified demonstrated crosswind component is 17 kt. And clearly neither the Bonanza or its pilot, i.e. me, could handle it in the sim either! I was quite some distance off the runway when I finally took off.

I arrived to France on my tour around Atlantic in TBM-930 in real weather: EGHC :airplane: LFBD

It took me some time to convince to convince ATC that I wanted to land rw 05, because of favourable wind, even though it wouldn’t have ILS approach. And then very good approach turned to almost crash landing, because I wanted to take screenshot before flare, but pressed wrong button and didn’t flare.

I seem to have entered a phase where I pick airports with howling winds! A few days ago I posted about a flight from KSEA to CYVR with strong winds, yesterday I flew in Iceland from Vestmannaeyjar (BIVM) to Reykjavik (BIRK). And this is what I saw lined up stationary on the runway:

I must admit I have NEVER seen 37kts IAS while standing still on the ground! Fortunately it was pretty much straight down the runway.

And then on route, still strong wind from the side.

Little town of Grindavik

Arriving at Reykjavik. Yes, I am a bit off the centreline of the runway. But I thought I would give the church steeple that you can see in the picture a bit of a wider berth…

On the ground at Reykjavik, and I noticed another church between the hangars

Turns out there are quite a few churches in Reykjavik. It would appear that autogen made them bigger and more extravagant than in real life though.

Number of steeples visible in the distance.

Some lovely, interesting images showing lots of activity Dan. You clearly have a good selection of good addons plus good display quality.
