Wind speed incorrectly saved when using a Weather Custom Preset in Hybrid mode

ISSUE DESCRIPTION

Description of the issue:
When using Hybrid as “Units of Measurement” when creating a weather custom preset, entered wind speed is taken as m/s (even if label says kt) and converted to kts upon saving

Provide specific location or coordinates:

Provide time and date of the observed weather issue:

[PC Only] Did you remove all your community mods/add-ons? If yes, are you still experiencing the issue? yes

FREQUENCY OF ISSUE

How often does this occur for you (Example: Just once, every time on sim load, intermittently)? every time

REPRODUCTION STEPS

Please list clear steps you took in order to help our test team reproduce the same issue:

  1. set “Units of Measurement” in Language to “Hybrid”
  2. go to Flight Conditions and create a custom preset based on the clear sky one (as an example)
  3. set the wind at ground level with a value of 20 kt
  4. save the custom preset
  5. select another weather preset and select back your custom one
  6. check the wind value, it now shows 38.88 kts (the original value has been converted from m/s to kts, 1 m/s = 1.944 kts )
Correct value should show 20 kt as previously saved.
  7. If you repeat those steps using the same preset by just updating a value even if not related to wind speed, the 38.88 kts value will be converted again, final result will be 75.57 kts.

No issue with the US mode (saving the value in kt) and the metric one (saving the value in m/s)

Edit: there was a change in SU2 related to Hybrid so root cause could come from that:

YOUR SETTINGS

If the issue still occurs with no mods and add-ons, please continue to report your issue. If not, please move this post to the User Support Hub.

What peripherals are you using, if relevant:

[PC Only] Are you using Developer Mode or have you made any changes to it?

[PC, MSFS 2020 Only] Are you using DX11 or DX12?

[PC Only] What GPU (Graphics Card) do you use?

[PC Only] What other relevant PC specs can you share?

MEDIA

set a 20 kt wind speed and save it:

selecting another preset and go back to your saved one, wind speed is now displaying 38.88 kt

• YES

Provide extra information to complete the original description of the issue:
• MSFS 2024 1.6.19.0 (Sim Update 4 Beta)

a small change in one parameter (e.g. changing cloud density from 1 to 0.95) will cause the sim to modify values throughout the preset. One example for before/after weather values is illustrated below with the original preset values on the right.

The same bug is visible in the in-flight weather panel.

My testing does seem to confirm this bug requires “Units = Hybrid”.

There is a separate bug report for changes to the weather settings (including these) always being written into the original preset file without any user control, and that issue has the effect of compounding this error each time the custom preset is used.

The issue is being caused not due to Knots being converted to km/hr but rather the conversion of knots to m/s. 1 m/s = 1.944 kts. If, for example, a preset has a wind speed of 4kts (you can use the in-game preset of “Few Clouds” for this example) and you make any change to the weather preset, even if you do not change the wind, (by making a change to a cloud layers coverage / density / scatter etc), the weather preset file is being saved and overwritten. The issue arises that in the process of saving the new settings, that wind value of 4 kts is being saved in the background not as 4 kts, but rather as 4 m/s and that change of windspeed is immediately implemented in the game. You can check this. When you close the in-game weather window and re-open it, the wind speed now shows 7.78 kts (4m/s = 7.78 kts) ie. 1.944 times more than the original 4 kts. If you now make another adjustment to a cloud layer setting, the sim saves and overwrites the weather preset file again but now it takes the 7.78 kts, saves that as 7.78 m/s. Close the in-game weather window again and then reopen it and you will see that the wind speed is still reported in knots but is 1.944 times more than it was before ie. it will now read as 15.11 kts. So every time you make any adjustment to a weather preset, the wind increases by a factor of 1.944. For reference, I’m on the MS store version of the sim.

Thank you for identifying the correct conversion issue !, I have updated my 1st post with that finding.

The 1st version of FS2024 had the wind speed field for hybrid set to m/s (as the metric one). Hybrid wind speed has been changed in a later SU from m/s to kts. So it seems they updated the label to “kt” but in fact the value you enter is still taken as m/s and when saved a conversion from m/s to kts still happens and it should not.

• YES

Provide extra information to complete the original description of the issue:
• The value of wind strenght shown is incorrect but not executed. Incorrect simulated wind value is executed after you change any weather parameter. I asume weather is saved and executed after any parameter is changed.
Only with hybrid units setting.

Why are you always breaking MSFS 2024 for the active gliding communities? Flight planning and now weather pre-sets. What will be next when SU4 is releases??

I can confirm this is still a problem. I was really wondering why changing small details such as cloud cover in a preset would also suddenly alter wind speeds! I now went to the metric system and this seems to have sorted it. Please fix.

Metric is not right neither. If you set a speed of 10 m/s it gives you 10 kts into the sim instead of 19kts. Reported here: Incorrect wind speed when using custom weather for US/Hybrid/Metric

Made another test to demonstrate the issue, this time in flight, hybrid selected. If 10kts setup in the custom weather preset (based on clear sky preset), in-sim resulting wind is 19kts:
