It did not always have the silly roll rate. it was changed after heaps of armchair “experts” n this forum kept complaining the roll rate was “far too slow for a biplane” becasue apparently being a biplane automatically made you aerobatic with a crazy good roll rate (the thing of course is actually a basic trainer just like the Tiger Moth). These same guys probably have no idea about even the difference between a snap roll, aileron roll and a barrel roll.
I suspect the continual complaining was probably effecting sales so they changed it.
I did that too! As much as I was looking forward to the Comanche, as soon as I switched to PC I bought the Fenix and have hardly flown anything else since. I can’t justify buying the Comanche when I have the Wilga and others bought in a sale and not even unboxed ever since.
The A320 is not perfect, it has a number of issues, but with the V2 block 1 already here, the V2 block 2 coming soon, and the A319/321 later this year I’m concerned my monthly top 10 is just going to be Fenix 10 times. It might not be perfect but heck is it good.
A footnote to say that the only reason I have the inibuilds A310 on my list is because I know in-truth how good that product is, without Asobo’s ridiculously clumsy ownership of it.
1.) I’ll go with the -800
2.) Yeah, I couldn’t decide between the two, but since the Arrow was the foundation for this add-on collection, I’ll go with that.
Not too much change this month, and there’s only a slight preference in the order I list them:
Ford Trimotor – this plane is truly historic, and executed very well in the sim! It’s fun to fly something that is sort of modern (all metal, three radial engines), but also sort of primitive (no flaps, no rudder or elevator trim, all three engines turn the same direction).
Piper L-4 Grasshopper – I’ve actually been flying this more with floats, and solo from the back seat. I figured out my trim/stall issues and am having a ton of fun flying this plane.
MiG-21 – this is, by far, the most difficult plane to land that I own. I’m getting pretty good at it, but it takes a lot of practice. Nevertheless, there’s something really cool about getting up to 40,000 feet, dropping my now empty tanks, and hitting Mach 2.1.
F-14A – this plane is simply a delight to fly. The B model is great too, but there’s an added challenge to flying the A.
AV-8B Harrier – another great and interesting plane to fly. I’ve gotten okay at taking off vertically and landing either with a short landing, or vertically.
Curtiss JN-4D – hop in, fire it up, fly!
Nieuport 17 – actually a bit more mild mannered than the Jenny, lighter, and more maneuverable.
Fouga Magister – this is a truly fantastic plane! Very detailed; it has a great flight model, is well balanced in flight. Simply amazing!
Caudron Rafale – this one just got an update last night on the Marketplace, and the new flight model is a great improvement! This plane is a challenge to land well, but it’s really neat.
Halo Pelican – another one that’s great to just jump in an fly. Go look at neat stuff, hover, open the back ramp, and look out at the scenery.
Not a huge amount of change this month - hopefully the Just Flight F28 will be entering somewhere in next month’s list for me..
The Just Flight BAE146 is firmly placed in my #1 spot. It’s rock solid, feels right, gives me plenty to do during a flight and has just enough automation and range to allow me to do regional hops and enjoy every minute. I’ll be getting the F28 Professional as soon as it’s on Xbox. Just Flight are the best.
Flysimware C414. Everyone loves this plane and so do I. It has plenty to do during a flight and the updates continue after all this time.
PDMG 737 800. I was a little harsh about this plane last month. It still irritates me slightly wrt simbrief, lack of ATC integration etc, but… There is a depth of simulation that I am looking forward to exploring more once the Xbox stability update is available.
Asobo / WT Beta 787. Has a good balance of systems / navigation detail and is also easy enough to go for a quick flight. The recent beta Simbrief integration for Xbox has elevated this a few places
Asobo / WT Beta 747. See above. Nice improvements in the latest beta.
Blackbird 310r. A great plane. I just prefer taking the C414 up a bit more.
iniBuilds a310 - I actually did a couple of flights in this aircraft again after a few months break and it deserves a place in this list @SavvySigma earlier post prompted me to consider it again.
PDMG DC6. I love taking this plane up but i can spend more time on the ground than in the air. It’s a great plane though.
Hans Hartmann ATR 400/700. I know I’m going to love these planes more when I spend more time with them.
Just Flight PA28. I have the PA28 bundle but haven’t spent enough time for them to grow on me. The Bae146 has most of my flight time.
I think a lot of people are turned off by the fact that this add-on finds itself in the unfortunate situation of being under Asobo’s possession. Right now, all the sounds are nearly completely washed out… and I don’t even know how it’s possible for them to screw this up ‘accidentally’.
I can guarantee you that if it was possible to buy this add-on from inibuilds directly (for MFS) and in turn, receive all their updates and support, this product would have featured in a lot more of these ‘Top 10’ lists.
My first post in this topic. I’ll list my top 10 in no particular order.
A2A Comanche 250 - no AC has better feel of “this is my plane”. I don’t know which aircraft is the best of the best in whole msfs, but this one is certainly contender.
FlyingIron Spitfire - I often fly low and fast, have a good visibility, hopping between POI’s in the world + I love warbirds that are made with passion and care, so what’s better choice than these three
Flying Iron Bf 109 - ditto
Flying Iron Hellcat - ditto
Just Flight Hawk T1 - when I need something little bit faster than above with QoL GPS. IMHO best fighter/trainer jet in the sim.
HPG Airbus H145 - No.1 choice for city sightseeing. Little heavy on FPS, but very enjoyable to fly
BlackBird/Milviz Cessna 310R - IMHO only plane in the sim which is close to comanche in this feel “this is my plane”. Before Comanche it was my top pick for casual GA flying. 414 is very nice and also one of my favourites, but sorry, if it have no failures and wear and tear, it’s nowhere near close for me (I don’t follow all updates if failures and wear and tear were already implemented, but last time I flew it, it had no failures/wear&tear)
PMDG Douglas DC-6 - first “study level” plane I owned and invested quite a bit of time to learn how to properly manage/fly it. And still I fly it quite often.
PMDG 737 (-700) - my No.1 choice for my airline flights. This is what I consider second contender for best of the best plane in the sim (together with Comanche)
Fenix A320 - ditto, but I had performance issues flying this plane for long time. With latest version its bit better, but subjectively I like Boeing a touch more. Objectively they are on same level with 737.
TOP 10 is really not a lot. I would need at least TOP 20 to list my all favourites
I started in the Kodiak, then moved into the Black Square King Air due to its range and speed. I used the Fenix for some long sectors and even the Comanche once it came out, but it was too slow to cover all of the miles!
All in all, it was mostly the King Air, followed by the Fenix, Kodiak and Comanche.
There were some definite surprises and fantastic scenery that made the hours really rewarding. I have to admit that as much as iike flying VFR (low and slow) in a small area, I much prefer the speeds at high altitude (30,000 feet on average) as it still gives a great overview of a country/area.
Russia, yeah, I guess you got me. I’ve flown there before but not really since the war started. Didn’t really have an interest to revisit because of it. That said, as I was making my way to Alaska, I was going to go up the eastern coast of Russia, which is beautiful! I ended up not going all that far up the coast, though, as I decided to swing east and check out the Alaskan islands that dot that part of the world.
I realized how bad the weather depiction is in NZ (too little variation thoughout the country) and Alaska (too much cloud cover and too much ice/snow in the middle of summer).
What an schizo month for me. I know that the Comanche sucked all the air out of the room for many of us GA flyers, but I’ve been all over the place with aircraft, including jets, which I thought I’d never fly (and have never flown in non-military sims).
Piper Comanche/A2A – Yep, it’s special and very deserving of the superlatives bandied about.
Piper Archer II/Carenado – Wait, what!!! A Carenado bird over all the other great airplanes? Sacrilege! I’ve reentered the work force after a two year vacation. Good news? I can buy gear and mods with zero guilt. Bad news? I’m pretty gassed after leaving the house at 6:15AM and returning at 5:45PM four days a week. When I want to fly after work I don’t want to do walkarounds or worry that my idle/taxi RPMs are off and will foul the plugs. I just want to jump in for a quick, 30-40 minute flight before heading off to bed. The Archer is perfect for that. Looks nice, sounds nice and is easy to get started and fly. Hope I don’t get banned for this one.
Kodiak 100/SWS – Had a Come to Jesus moment with this one recently. It’s a great plane that gave me fits, and it seemed like each flight ended in disaster, whether it was bad luck, or more frequently, self-inflicted stupidity. I won’t let this one beat me because I like it too much. I flew into a thunderstorm over the Grand Tetons today and survived and then from Kelowna to Calgary without flying into a mountain. Maybe we’ve turned the corner. It’s just too cool of an airplane to permanently leave in the hangar, and making seating/default view adjustments has made it easier to read the evil G1000.
Sting S4/FSReborn
DH82 Tiger Moth/Ant’s Airplanes
Piper Warrior/Just Flight – Please fix the runway handling on this, JF. It would be at #2 instead of the Archer, but this is unflyable in crosswinds.
AN-2/AT Simulations – When the SF-260 rolled out I watched a demo video from @Stearman948713. I’m holding off on the SF until bugs are fixed, but I started watching a lot of this guy’s videos, which led me to the An-2. He’s a terrific pilot and produces a lot of nice videos of MSFS classic planes. All the An-2’s buttons and levers to play with are a dream for me. Add the Cyrillic (about 3/4 of which I understand/remember) and I’m in a happy place for an hour or so. It seems like it should be a lot louder and smokier than it is in the sim, but this thing just oozes personality and fun.
PC-6 Porter/Blackbird – Can’t get rid of this one.
HondaJet/FlightFX – Picked this up when buying the AN-2 from the Market Place. It’s the opposite of what I like in airplanes – more hands-on time on the ground with flight prep than actually flying the plane, visibility of a Type VII U-boat (or maybe a Gemini space capsule if I’m feeling generous), electronic everything, etc. But it’s still really fun to fly and surprisingly better to hand fly than a lot of GA aircraft – I have to manually fly it more than designed because I’m an idiot when it comes to the G3000. For the price it’s up there with the Tiger Moth for best payware aircraft value. I can’t believe that one guy made this plane.
Piper Arrow III/Just Flight – See #6. I still love this plane except for the runway handling in a crosswind. Like the Warrior it’s nice to fly over Crapville at night when the winds have died down.
Yeah, if your after a “jump in and fly” personal jet the Vision Jet is a better choice, though it may not have been available at the time you picked up the Honda Jet and they are similar enough you will not necessarily get a lot out of owning both.
FBW A320 replaced by the Fenix. I can use the latter again, due to a combination of its V2 update and my PC upgrade. Pity about losing the copilot avatar, but definitely looks nicer, especially now that I play in 4K resolution. The higher res along with monitor size increase from 40 to 50 inches also means readable tiny gauges without zooming in for the Bae146, and even a definite cosmetic bump to the Islander cockpit. Loving it.
JPL/WB C152 replaced by the ATR. Simply have had enough of the Cessna for now after grinding with it in Neofly until I could afford to buy an Islander.
The other eight (same as last time) are:
Britten Norman BN2 Islander [BlackBox Simulation]
BAe 146 [Just Flight]
Antonov An-2 [Microsoft]
Piper PA-28R Arrow [Just Flight] - also extra nice in 4K…
Cessna L19 Bird Dog [BlackBox Simulation]
Mooney M20R Ovation [Carenado]
P-38 Lightning [Flying Iron Simulations]
C-160 Transall [AzurPoly] – controls will be a pain to set up again though because I stupidly did not back up and transfer the Axis&Ohs database to the new PC.
This will be the last list until November, because next month is Starfield, and then the one after will be Forza (and ETS2 as I will have the wheel out on the desk and the game will have a new lease on life due to the 4K thing). See you then, probably in a Comanche, Shorts and/or A300-600F!
