The sim is not the same than before. And people (like me) running the sim before SU5 on Ultra with some shadow settings at high are not happy with the SU5 result. Because they know, before there was much more. And if you have ever flown on 35000ft with all details avail, you miss something because the sim now looks like a 90´s satellite image to them. And that is not a pleasure. Its like a wooden block at the front end of your throttle levers.
I only fly GA craft generally below 3000 feet so cannot comment on airliners and 30,000 feet but for me the overall visuals are improved considerably by virtue of the fact that I can run my Reverb G2 at its full resolution finally, it’s now very close to my 4K TV in terms of quality.
That said there are definitely trade offs, that I expect Asobo will improve.

There is definitely some terrain and object pop in/culling. For me it’s barely noticeable since the hotfix and didn’t bother me at all yesterday, but I fly around 90 KIAS in a Cessna at 2500 feet, I can imagine flying fighter jets or airliners at higher altitude it is more noticeable.
-
Clouds definitely look a little worse. Hopefully they can fix that. They have had issues with the clouds in the past which they fixed so I’m really not concerned here.
-
Colour saturation definitely changed. It feels like when you change the temps on a TV. Everything has a slight tint to it now. I don’t know if its worse or just different. I got used to it.
-
In VR ATC menus are worse, no aliasing and jagged althought text unaffected.
Postive
My resolution and clarity are insanely sharp in the G2 now. I’m able to make out so much more fine details than before. Flying low and slow is a joy at this resolution and clouds and fields over Cornwall look photorealistic at times.
I suspect the LOD pop in, clouds, menus and colour saturation issues will all be fixed over the coming weeks, and I don;t see any of it as signs of deliberate dumbing down or degradation.
It reminds me when the UK update removed photgrametry for Southampton and Portsmouth and some people went nuts. It was just a bug and quickly fixed.
I’m sure it will be the same here too.
Disgrace, then the author goes on to say the quality remained the same.
I’m less fussed about the graphics issues, though the popping is extremely annoying - I had no issue running it as it was before and had no popping, it does rather take away from one of the supposed selling points of this thing.
But we can debate whether those are minor issues. What are not minor are fundamental flaws in aircraft, FMC, weather, ATC, that have been there for a year and still show no sign of being fixed, and this simply isn’t fit for purpose until they are. If you want to zoom around some pretty picture pictures, and that’s fun at times, it does work for that when it wants to, but as a sim it’s still nowhere near there, and I doubt it ever will be. Some here obviously don’t care about that, fine, but don’t tell those who do care that they should just shut up and deal with it.
Just consider that someone thought it appropriate in a flight sim that is there is a thunderstorm anywhere within 100 miles you should hear huge repeated thunderclaps while you fly. In years of flying round thunderstorms in the tropics I’ve not once heard thunder inside a plane. It loses any sense of authenticity. Same for icing. Why does ATC still do the rollercoaster it did in FSX when approaching over terrain. It’s clear the engine was just copied across. It’s just poor all round, I’m sure good people are trying their best, but the right people weren’t chosen.
The shadowing is so poor. Makes for poor contrasting and depth. The green tint doesn’t help either.
They would be though if simply set to clear skies possibly. Then again, there would be no cloud comparison to note there either. Scratch that one then ![]()

I’m actually shocked by this
Could this be a factor also?
there are millions of msfs users. I am one of the happy ones. I can fly ultra and terrain lod 400 with decent
framerate on my mediocre system. Now the lighting is more bright as it was too dark before SU5.
my specs:
4790K, 32 GB, 1080ti, 4 TB SSD
not native english
Yes, buildings are definitely worse quality.

Wow those videos show a massive increase in framerate. I never look at mine but it’s silky smooth now and the micro stutters are gone. Great job Asobo.
Friends, Let me clear up a few things! There’s a lot of people jumping to conclusions, understandably, and giving me hate in the comments, not so understandable.
First of all:
Settings are exactly the same, I checked before filming, they were like for like!
Weather: Attempted to be as close as possible, with Scattered Clouds, around 12:30 in the afternoon, with exactly the same weather on both. Sadly, I cannot control individual cloud placement and the sun did shine through. YES I SHOULD’VE PUT IT ON CLEAR! My Bad!!
Video: I never expected it to really be viewed as a scenery comparison but more so a FPS comparison, I guess I should have thought this through alas here we are.
My PC: Med/High Spec, RX5600XT, Ryzen 5 3600, 32GB Ram - Not exactly something to be frowned at and capable of running at high settings at SU4 to a degree. The ability to raise some to ultra after SU5, more than likely, gave me the illusion of improvement.
Bullying and harassment: Some comments I received have not been OK and have been swiftly deleted, I am, also, not paid by Asobo in anyway, shape or form! Just be polite, I don’t know whether to unlist or delete this video! Despite a lot of effort, there was shortcomings on my part but I’m still relatively new to youtube and being honest wanted to get this video out quickly to show you guys the improvements, this clearly didn’t give me enough to time check it all through and for that, I am incredibly sorry!
I hope you enjoyed somewhat, sorry again
Pilot Studd
Weather was on ‘scattered clouds’ and at 12:24, worldwide, same weather. Sadly, the clouds are hard to control, I should’ve used clear skies! Sorry
Apologies if you didn’t find it helpful!
Graphics do seem washed out, not crisp like it used to be.
Dear Asobo, in just few weeks its the first anniversary coming for Microsoft Flight Simulator, on the 18th of august. The best way to celebrate this Sim is bringing back the graphical fidelity which made this sim remarkable. And fix some issues as well. I hope for the best for the team and the sim. The downgrade hurts tbh.
Wow, espacially 0:53 till 2:53 in that video show SU4 and SU5 are worlds apart.
It’s an absolute disgrace what Microsoft/Asobo have done to the Sim.
Not your fault mate - your video was hijacked by people with an agenda to prove a point
I not think that compare videos are per se useless. But if such videos are created, then we need exact same pre conditions, normal view-ports (in special with only 1080p) , same setting, etc. .
I assume you know what I mean. My critism was a bit hard (don’t worry, I not pressed thumbs down
), but we can find so many of these videos. Users look at that videos and start to think about “useless” things instead to enjoy the game.
It makes me laugh actually because Idon’t know which of these pictures is which, and as I don’t know which looks closer to reality, I’m not sure I care that much
