I am wondering if I am alone in liking the 2020 interface vs the 2024 one. I especially miss the profile (hangar) where you can look at the aircraft exterior and interior. I wonder if somehow we can get that option back or something similar and maybe even an option toggle for the old (legacy) interface in the options. Am I alone in feeling this way?
What would be cool is a hangar showcase feature where you could see any aircraft available on the marketplace exterior and interior and special points for toggling the avionics on and seeing them with a day/night toggle.
I have to agree that the 2020 UI was so much better. It was intuitive, clear and concise. After a year, I still have to dig around to find a simple thing like a variant.
Yes, it’s a shame that the aircraft selection menu mostly received downgrades from 2020.
For example, it’s a bit unhelpful only being able to see a handful of addons at a time in free flight aircraft select. We only see two rows of aircraft at once, so it takes an age to get to the right part of the alphabet. This was a problem on 2020 as well; I was hoping 24 would have more customisability here, a list option or a larger grid with smaller pictures (say 5x5 selectable tiles) would make it much easier to browse my collection than 2x3. I never played FSX but from what I’ve seen the UI has much more utility than MSFS.
There also used to be lots of sorting filters on 2020 so you could filter for “jets”, “airliners” etc. I was hoping for more filters in 24, but they got rid of them altogether!
The main menu UI is also really clunky, looks like a windows 8 developer still hasn’t let go of the “tile based” UI fad. I don’t know why the largest and top most tile is the photography mode, I don’t think I’ve ever opened it. Nothing against alternative ways to play, but a lot of 24 UI feels more like it’s designed to advertise a shiny marketing feature or to push MTX rather than to provide a better experience.
Meanwhile, they managed to add all this functionality and much more to marketplace UI, buying addons is so much more complete and polished than browsing your planes for 15 mins every time you open the sim.
I had put the flightsim aside for a while for personal reasons. Last week I started a few sessions with msfs 2024 and it felt bad and uncomfortable each time. Then I ran msfs 2020 and everything was ok. I guess on the day they kill 2020 I’ll quit flight simulator. It’s just no fun any more.
The 2020 UI is better than 2024 in nearly every way. Responsiveness, structure, number of clicks needed, and especially the aircraft selection is a huuuge step back in usability. It’s kind of impressive how badly they messed this one up. I mean Ican live with most of it now since you just get used to it, but the airplane selection is terrible each and every time.
And now in SU5 beta they’ve added more clicks to the graphics settings, I can’t even.
Along with huge oversights like still defaulting to the 2D graphics settings when accessing the graphics settings in VR. No one wants to change their 2D settings while in VR.
Agreed. The aircraft selection menu is truly terrible and worse than the selection menu in 2020. And, different developers handle it differently. Some use the variants which helps and others just litter the top level menu with all the variants.
Can’t see them fixing it up now but maybe it will get cleaned up for MSFS 2028.
I admit I also disliked the new interface in the beginning. But to be fair, that dislike was my typical reaction to the need of learning something new (after getting so accustomed to the previous version).
So for me, it kind of fell into the category of: „Everything was better in times gone by“ - a reflex I try to fight whenever I encounter it, especially as I get older.
I now have some 50h in the new sim (changed only recently) and by now I know where all the functions are located. I actually started to like the nee interface! Particularly the control bindings, which I find way better than in FS2020.
And about the hangar: we now have walkaround mode! I totally love it, particularly in VR. Finally I get a good feeling for size and state of my plane, before flight. Highly immersive, and quite true to RL, imho!
Still like the 2020 interface in general. Would be cool in the options if we could toggle it. Not that hard in today’s programming. I agree with liking the walk-around. Great for immersion, realism on flights. Definitely they get points for that. I’ve to have the hangar for when you are trying to figure out what you want to fly, similar to if I real life you had multiple planes and was walking around the hangar. And like I said I would love to be about to have all planes in the hangar. Not just ones you own but all the ones to purchase. I know there are pictures in the marketplace but this would be more like you went to the dealership to see it vs looking at it online. Like I said also, their would be extra points for being able to toggle the instruments on and off and for daylight nighttime toggle. It’s similar to going to the dealership and sitting in the seat. There could even be a purchase button right there as well.
I fired up FS2020 yesterday for perhaps one of the last times before I uninstall it once the BKSQ Caravan comes out, but yes, the FS2020 menu system is somewhat more intuitive than FS2024 in my opinion. The 2024 plane selection menu design had good intentions, but is still pretty awkward to select a plane, then variant, then livery at times (i.e. Fenix A32x).
However, I spend 99.9% of my time flying, not “menuing”, so I’ll live with it.
I don’t think having an opinion that something can be improved is suggestive of being pre-pubescent.
Adding a favourites option for aircraft, for example, would massively improve the current UI. This would avoid the near endless horizontal scrolling though planes I have no interest in flying.
Simply remove the aircraft you have no interest in flying. It’s much easier to do that in 2024 than it ever was in 2020. I have only favourites in my hangar, nothing I don’t want there.
