A2A Aerostar 600

That’s not a bad idea… :eyes:

I bought this on day 1, and day 1 ended with me feeling quite disappointed, the cockpit textures seemed a lower level than on the Comanche, and many other add-ons, more reminiscent of a Blackbox plane. I couldn’t get the engines started, and it was all a bit of a disaster. Then on day 2 I hit autostart (I much prefer starting the engines on my own) and went for a flight, perhaps it doesn’t look great, but like the Blackbox planes mentioned above, It is a pure pleasure to fly by hand, and challenging fun to use the autopilot correctly.

I have been flying BlackSquare’s much lauded Starship on a round-the-world tour, but I keep wanting to fly the Aerostar, as soon as I land it, so I’m now doing two tours, round the world on the Starship, and a North to South tour of the West Coast of South America, on the Aerostar,

I’m as happy as a clam, I haven’t even flown any of the jetliners, which has become my typical MSFS activity, since Aerostar came out.

There’s a trick to starting the engines, it says in the checklist to set the mixture to zero, that doesn’t work, try 40-50% instead then as soon as the engine starts to fire, increase the mixture.

You’re going to flood the engines doing that.

I’m doing it like they have done on their Youtube video in the real plane.

A little bit of throttle, no mixture, boost pump. Max mixture for 4 seconds, then back to zero. And then it almost always starts to catch when I engage the starter. Then just max mixture and it works. For me, the problem in the beginning was that I interpreted the wet gurgling sound as the engine being flooded, but it’s actually when it starts properly catching on and just waits for max mixture.

It’s a little bit strange, because the sounds were always different in other high fidelity piston planes, so maybe I’m wrong. But it works, and it’s close enough to the real thing on the video, so I will just pretend I’m doing it properly

But generally, despite me complaining earlier, I can’t stop flying this thing. It might have things missing, but it just feels SO good. For me, much better than the Comanche.

Works everytime for me, I watched a few streams where users followed the checklist and it wouldn’t start.

There is no reason to have the mixture set to half when starting. All this is going to do is flood it. If this is working it’s because you’re returning the mixture to idle cutoff and opening up the throttle while you crank the engine. The engine already has enough fuel to start. After a few times if it doesn’t start you may need to prime it again using the mixture but once done set it to idle cutoff and try again. Once it fires push the mixture in. If you don’t do this the engine is going to quit as it will be starved of fuel.

I’m not saying you’re wrong, just how the aircraft is working in the sim for me. Checklist is followed - fuel pumps on, advance mixture so FF meter moves (for about 4 seconds), then return mixture to zero. I then move mixture forward to about 40% and turn magneto to start.

I think part of the problem is being able to recognise when the engine is starting to fire up, which isn’t always that obvious.

I’ve uninstalled it for now and will probably wait for the release version before trying again.

I actually don’t mess around with mixture lever that much. My starting procedure is: Props and Mixture full forward, throttles open a bit (so that after engine starts it idles at around 1000RPM) → fuel boost pump on 4 to 5 seconds → fuel pump off → engage starter untill engines starts (max 20 seconds so that the starter doesn’t overheat). → mixture to around 50% so that the spark plugs won’t foul while sitting at around 1000RPMs for warm up and avionics setup.

Worked every time for me, albeit in warm to hot conditions in live weather. Haven’t tried starting this thing in colder environments.

I have tried this, exact method, except I also joggle the throttle a bit (which always seems to work on the Comanche) and it basically works maybe half the time, having the mixture on also works maybe half the time.

When they start I’m happy, when they don’t start I say the f-word, hit autostart, and then I’m happy.

Has anyone been able to effectively perform a preflight walkaround using only an xbox controller? “Walking around” the aircraft is easy enough, but actually grabbing onto things like the flaps, ailerons, horizontal / vertical stabilizers, seems to not be possible, unless I’m just missing something?

Any have any ideas?

While I have not tried with the controller yet, I have been clicking off the walk around items on the tablet, rather than on the items outside the airplane.

I’m having 100% success from cold & dark by doing the same that is done in the real aircraft.

Pump is on.
Throttle about 1/4.
Mixture is off.

(The next part is to prime the engine and is optional)
Move mixture to full and back to off once or twice. Leave it in off at the end.
(end of the optional part)

Turn on the starter.
Mixture to full. (no delay).
And it starts. The key is that you don’t have to wait for the engine to start or spurt or anything, while the starter is working move the mixture to full.
Then just back the throttle a bit and the mixture while you are not yet taxiing.

Even on the PC it’s hard to do, you seem to need to be a very specific distance and angle from whatever you want to inspet/interact with.

I have done this also, it has worked, but not always, maybe something to do with my axis.

Is anyone else having issues with the sim thinking you’ve crashed the aircraft just after rotation?

It’s happened to me a handful of times now. Someone on the a2a forums said it had to do with the window being opened? Im either blind, or there isn’t a window to even open. I’ve never opened a window intentionally.

Have you tried turning off stress damage in your MSFS settings? It’s always the first thing I turn off, as it just doesn’t work properly.

Oh actually I haven’t…I will try that later today once I’m able to get to the sim and report back. Thanks for the suggestion!

It was definitely this. No issues since turning it off. Thanks for the help!
